REASONS WHY STUDENTS ARE LATE

Introduction

Being late in going to school is an everyday scenario for some students. On a consistent

basis it can have longer-term academic effects. Socializing with other people can also be affected

because they have less interaction with their classmates due to tardiness. Students are sometimes

missing half of their lessons, lack of focus and it causes them to fail some classes.

Oxford dictionary defines lateness as arriving after the expected or usual time. Therefore,

being late is unpunctuality and not being early. There are many reasons that can cause tardiness

but what are the valid and true reasons behind?

According to the study of Carnegie Mellon University n.d, students who come to class

late can disrupt the flow of the discussion, distract other students and impede learning. If left

unchecked, lateness can become chronic and spread throughout the class. Because there are a

number of possible reasons for students arrive to class late, also consider what these reasons are.

Dr. Ken Shore n.d, states that, some students are late for school for reasons that are

beyond their control. Some students arrive at school after the bell has rung because of choices

they've made. Their lateness might be a symptom of anxiety about school, caused by either

academic or social concerns.

Children commonly miss their school or coming lately because of their usual habits, such

as waking up late due to laziness; rushing of undone assignments, unprepared bath; breakfast or

meals; clothes or their packed lunch etc. and waiting for classmates and friends. Parents problem

 This is one of the problems that teachers and students are facing now, because late

students have increased over the time, because of their mindset that it's okay. But we never got

the answers to why students are late to school and not being aware of their scheduled time for

school. Understanding the reasons why may help but not really tolerating their behavior.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the ff:

a. Gender

b. Age

2. What are the reasons of tardiness of Junior Highschool students

Hypothesis

1. There is no significant relationship between tardiness and academic performance.

2. There is a significant relationship between tardiness and academic performance.

Significance of the Study

Scope and Delimitation

The study covers the reasons of tardiness in JHS, Academic 2017-2018 at Top Achiever Private
School.
In order to assess and determine the reasons of tardiness in JHS as the respondents of his study the
researchers will use questionnaires. The reasons will be based on the gathered and tallied result of
responses by the respondents.
