Corruption may be defined as an act of bribery or misuse of political position or power for the
fulfillment of selfish motives which may or may not be monetary. India is a developing country and is
facing many challenges. Corruption is the most detrimental of them and is one of the major obstacle
in the development of the country. In fact India was placed at 76th position out of 168 countries in
transparency International corruption perception index 2015.Owing to improper democratic system
and lack of severe punishment mechanism for culprits, this evil called corruption thrived in recent
years and has now reached to an alarming situation. It is weakening the political body and damaging
the supreme importance of laws governing the society. Initially bribe was paid for getting wrong
things done but now bribe is paid for getting right things done at right time.

Building a new India is almost impossible as long as there is poison of corruption. It is an obstacle that
people of India must overcome to achieve economic prosperity and overall development. Horrible
consequences of corruption have been observed in recent years. There have been many scams and
scandals which tarnished the image of country like coal allocation scam,2G spectrum scam,
commonwealth games scam and many more. As a result people lost trust in the government. Even the
corruption at low level cannot be ignored. Corruption leads to artificially high prices of low quality
products, resources are inefficiently allocated due to this evil, it causes uneven distribution of wealth
and leads to poor education and health facilities.

The question is how to eradicate corruption? Eliminating corruption is impossible without the
collective efforts and will of people and government. There is an urgent need of an anti-corruption
revolution. Einstein rightly said, ”The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil but by those
who watch them without doing anything.”Unless every Indian especially in public sector discards
corruption totally, the objective of new prosperous India cannot be achieved. Indian law system is so
vulnerable that in spite of being guilty ,no action is taken against politicians and bureaucrats and they
continue their evil deeds fearlessly. Though many anti-corruption agencies have been made but they
exist in name only. So there is need for government to not only make laws but also to check whether
they are implemented and followed or not. An eye must be kept on the work of these anti-corruption
agencies. Strict and severe actions should be taken against those who are found to be guilty. One
should neither be at receiving nor at bribing end. Government officials, bureaucrats and politicians
should stop putting their personal gains before the welfare of the nation. There must be large scale
protests by the people against scams. Media can play a vital role in eradicating corruption. The
concerted efforts of people, media and government have the power to eliminate this evil from India.
Let us all join hands to remove this evil from our country. The day it eradicates, a new India will
automatically emerge and will stun the whole world by its achievements in various fields.
