Lesson Plan

Mathematics 9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, at least 75% of the learners should be able to:
1. define the Pythagorean Theorem,
2. solve problems using the formula 𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 ,
3. appreciate the concept of Pythagorean Theorem in our daily life.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Pythagorean Theorem
B. Reference: Geometry III pg. 79-80 by Pastor B. Malaborbor.,et.al
C. Teaching Strategies: Activity, Discussion, Board work, Seatwork
D. Instructional Materials: Textbook, Chalk, Chalkboard, Visual Aids, Laptop, Eraser
E. Values: Cooperation, Unity, Participation and Sportsmanship

III. PROCEDURE/S
A. Preparatory Activities
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Maintenance of the classroom order
d. Checking of attendance
e. Checking of assignment
f. Review of the past lesson
What are the sides of a Right triangle?
g. Motivation

B. Developmental Activities
a. Presentation
b. Discussion
Pythagorean Theorem
-the square of the length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares
of the lengths of the other two sides.

c- Longest side
b- Longer leg Hypotenuse
Opposite sides

a- Shorter leg
Adjacent sides

Example 1

3-Opposite sides 5- Hypotenuse

3- Adjacent sides
Solution:

𝒄𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐
52 = 42 + 32
25 = 16 + 9
𝟐𝟓 = 𝟐𝟓

Example 2 Example 3

If a=12, and b=5, find c? If b=6, and c=10, find a?

Solution: Solution:
𝒄𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐 𝒄𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐
𝑐 2 = 122 + 52 102 = 𝑎2 + 62
𝑐 2 = 144 + 25 100 = 𝑎2 + 36
𝒄𝟐 = 𝟏𝟔𝟗 𝟏𝟎𝟎 − 𝟑𝟔 = 𝑎2

ξ𝒄𝟐 = ξ169 ξ64 = ξ𝒂𝟐

𝒄 = 𝟏𝟑 𝟖=𝒂

Example 4

If the foot of a 25 meter ladder is placed 7 meter away from a wall, how high up the wall will the ladder reach?
Let c = 25 meter ladder
b = 7 meter away from the building
a = height of the wall will the ladder reach

Solution:
𝒄𝟐 = 𝒂𝟐 + 𝒃𝟐
252 = 𝑎2 + 72
625 = 𝑎2 + 49
𝟔𝟐𝟓 − 𝟒𝟗 = 𝑎2

ξ576 = √𝒂𝟐
𝟐𝟒 = 𝒂
c. Analysis

Did you know now how to find the unknown length of a side of a right triangle?
What theorem should we use in finding the unknown length of a side of a right triangle?

a b c
7 25
15 17
5 12

What values you can learn after doing the activity?

f. Evaluation

Direction: Answer the following using the formula of Pythagorean Theorem.

1. If a=15, and b=8, find c?
2. If a=40, and c=41, find b?
