Background of the Surah
ﺷﺎﻥ ﻧﺰﻭﻝ
Shan e nuzool means the background or reason why an ayat or surah of the Quran was revealed.
At that time in Arabia if any one’s male offspring passed away and he was left with no male sons, that
person would be called “Abtar”. Hence, when Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺson named Ibrahim or Qasim(in
some sources) passed away, the disbelievers would ridicule and make fun of him by calling him Abtar since
he had no male offspring left. They would further say that there will be no one to take Prophet
Muhammad’s ﷺmessage forward because he had no heirs.
The prominent person behind this foolishness is quoted to be Aas Bin Wael. When he would be told by
others that Prophet Muhammad ﷺhas given some teaching of Islam, he would answer in return that
there isn’t any need to listen to him because he will die eventually and since no one will be able to take his
message forward; his teachings will end with him.
However, Allah showed them otherwise. Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺfamily legacy was taken forward
from his daughters. Especially Hazrat Fatima who gave birth to two sons Hassan and Hussain and
hence the family name and message continued till date.
Prophet Muhammad ﷺwas a soft hearted soul and when the disbelievers would make fun of him ﷺ,
he would be disheartened and it would affect him ﷺ. Hence Allah revealed this surah and comforted
him by saying in the first verse that Hazrat Muhammad ﷺhas been provided the gift of Kausar.

AYAT NO. 1
mentioned. Allah also says “We gave” which signifies Him (Allah ) as a royal subject and that the
object being given “The Kauthar” is also of great honour.
What is Kausar?
1. Abundant Goodness. Kausar is every and all types of good things that exist in this world and the
Hereafter.
2. It is a river in Paradise which Allah has given to His Prophet ﷺThis meaning is what is meant
in the verse where Allah says (interpretation):
This river will be square shaped and very big. Its water will be even whiter than milk, taste sweeter than
honey and smell even more refreshing than the Mushk.
A part of this lake will be in Madane Mahshr, the place where all humans will be in after they are woken up
from their graves and before entering into Jannah or Jahannum. There will be two water falls coming from
this river in Jannah and will fall into this Cistern which will be present in Madane Mahshar. Also known as
Hauz-e-Kausar, this is where we will find our beloved Prophet ﷺon the day of Resurrection. He will be
sitting just by the cistern and will make us drink the water from the cistern from his own blessed hands.
After waking up from our graves, we will be extremely thirsty and after taking just one sip of the water we
will never be thirsty ever again.
Now in this cistern, there will be pots floating in it to be used to drink the water. These pots will be made
from Gold and Silver and will seem like stars on a starry night. It will be such a beautiful sight.
Only the Ummah of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺwill drink from here. His ummah will be the most in numbers
and he’ll be proud of this so we should be extremely grateful that we are a part of his Ummah. This cistern
is a gift which was given to Hazrat Muhammad ﷺso we should all make dua that we get to drink from it.
5
Will everyone get to drink from the Cistern?
Some people from Hazrat Muhammad’s ﷺUmmah will come to drink the water but they will be taken
away by the angels. So much so that there will be a veil between them and Hazrat Muhammad ﷺhence
they will be deprived from drinking from the cistern. These will be people who make innovations in Islam
and do biddat.
What is biddat?
Biddat is doing any act of worship which wasn’t done by Holy Prophet ﷺor his Companions with the
intention of getting rewards.

AYAT NO. 2
The word “then” is represented by the letter ﻓﺎءin Arabic. Since in the first Ayat, Allah is saying that we
have given you Kauthar, in the second ayat He is showing ways of being grateful to Him for bestowing us
with such a gift. There are two primary ways of doing so:
1. Pray salah
Namaz (salah) is a one of its kind physical ibadat. It’s through that we get washed from our sins and
become close to Allah .
2. Perform sacrifice
The word mentioned in the ayat is Nahr which means camel slaughter. However sacrifice of any mentioned
animal can be done such as goat, cow or sheep.
1. Physical ( )ﺑﺪﻧﻲibadah: An act of worship that requires us to make use of our physical body and
physical strength. These include Salah (namaz), Saum (fasting/roza) and Pilgrimage (hajj)
2. Financial ( )ﻣﺎﻟﻲibadah : An act of worship that requires us to spend our wealth. This includes alms
giving (zakaat/charity), sacrifice (qurbani) and Pilgrimage (hajj)
Note: Hajj is considered to be a physical and financial worship (ibadah) both as in hajj we need to use our
physical strength as well as our wealth and spend it in Allah’s cause.
7
AYAT NO. 2
Anyone who hates the Prophet ﷺwill be cut off from all blessings and good in this life and the next.
Allah reveals in the third verse that it’s actually the enemies who are Abtar and not Holy Prophet ﷺ.
Like Abu Lahab had 8 or 10 sons, but he died alone out of his town. He suffered from such an illness that
no one wanted to come near him and even when he died, he was kicked in his grave by his sons because
they didn’t want to touch him.
A few prominent non-believers who used to ridicule the Holy Prophet ﷺwere Qaab Bin Ashraf, Aas bin
Wael and Uqaba and they would say that no one will remember Holy Prophet ﷺ.
However the reality is quite different. Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺname is everywhere in the world, it is
called out 5 times in the form of Azaan all around the world and hence we all are his spiritual offspring.
