QAQCR 2.

5 Manual
Training Workbook
Exercise 1: QA/QC Policy Checklist
 What are you assaying?

 Do you have a documented and controlled QA/QC policy?

 How are you measuring the QC in the field?

 Are analytical method detection limits defined?

 Are quality control parameters defined?

Current QA/QC plan

 Standards – at what frequency are they inserted (e.g. 1 in 25)?

 Standards – what types of standards are used (e.g. CRM’s, In-house,

etc)?

 Standards – do you know the expected value and the expected standard
deviation?

 Blanks – at what frequency are they inserted (e.g. 1 in 50)?

 Blanks – what types of blanks are used (e.g. coarse, crushed or pulp)?

 Repeats (what types and how often)?

 What percentage of total samples are QAQC related?

QA/QC Check List

 How does QC data get into your database?

 What software do you use for QC?

 Who is the QC-champion? What responsibilities do they have?

 Are you confident in the quality of your existing assay data?

 Are there procedures (corrective actions) in place for addressing QC-

issues?

Exercise 2: Database connections
1. Copy the _Default configuration and call the new configuration
Training_QAQCR

2. Select the newly created Training configuration file. Tick the Check DB
box and Load configuration. Make any necessary edits so that there are no
errors.

3. Select All Projects and all Datasets and then select all laboratories for
2011. How many batches are available to select?

4. Select all batches. What types of repeats are included in the selected
batches?

Repeat Types:
___________________________________________________________

5. Select batch AA00100. What types of repeats are included in this batch?
(Hint: Select Maxwell Laboratory)

Repeat Types:
___________________________________________________________

6. How many batches have these types of repeats?

Exercise 3: Generating Charts for Standards
1. Box Plots
Generate a box plot for Au. Write the name of the standards which have returned
assay values showing a positive bias.

Standard: _________________

What use do you see for the box plots?

___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

Run the box plot for Au and Cu

Why is the number of standards displayed different to the number of standards in
the control chart dropdown list?

2. Control Charts

Generate a control chart for the standard that has the largest positive bias in the
previous exercise. Select by all methods and write down the Calculated mean
and CV. . Then run the control chart again by the different methods for the
element Au. Note down the calculated mean and CV below.for each graph.

Calculated Mean: _________________ CV: _________________

Calculated Mean: _________________ CV: _________________
Calculated Mean: _________________ CV: _________________

Generate a control charts for the standard OREAS 13 P, all methods and
element Cu by instance and date. What can you say about the performance of
this standard. Use LIB Values and 2 SD lines.
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
Bias of mean: _________________ Bad Standards_________________

There are obvious outliers on this control chart filter them out and replot the
graph.
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

Bias of mean: _________________ Bad Standards_________________

Plot the standards OREAS 13 and 44P on the same chart. What reasons could
cause this distribution of results ? What action should be taken.
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

Generate a control chart for the standard SARM7b and SARM7b.5 for All
Methods and the Element Au. Are there any comments that you could make
looking at the spread of the returned values?

3. Standard types

Select the standard type CRM Element Au and run the interactive graph. How
can the interactive graph be improved.

______________________________________________________________

Edit the standard types in the SQL database (tblSYSQCReference ) so that the
standards are divided into Highgrade and low
Reload the configuration and run the new standards type charts. IS the data
easier to interpret? Why?

Exercise 4: Repeat Charts and Statistics
1. Move onto the Repeat Charts tab and generate a Scatter Plot for Originals Vs
Field Dup for Au How many repeat pairs are plotted and how many were
labelled as Bad?

No. Rpts: ________________ No. Bad: _________________

2. Change the bad repeat rule so that repeats are labelled as bad when they
vary from the original value by more than 5% and they are greater than 5
times the detection limit. How many repeat pairs are plotted and how many
were labelled as Bad?

No. Rpts: ________________ No. Bad: _________________

3. In terms of what is selected from the assay database, what is the difference
of a Compare type by Sample Name as opposed to Compare type by Repeat
code?

_____________________________________________________________

4. Produce a QQ-plot of Method AR_AAS and Element Au for Original Vs Field

Dup. Is there anything that can be interpreted from this plot?

_____________________________________________________________
_

5. Produce a TH – PvC plot of All Methods and Element Au for Original Vs Field
Dup. What (approximately) is the precision at concentration of Au 3 ppb?

Precision(%): ________________

6. Produce a %MAPD plot of All Methods and Element Au for Original Vs Field
Dup for the grade range 0 to 10 and use a Threshold line of 40. What
percentage of the repeat pairs have a mean absolute paired difference of
better that or equal to 40%?

Percentage: _________________
