DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

WellPoint is the nation's leading health benefits company serving the needs of approximately 35 million
medical members nationwide. WellPoint is included in the S&P 500 index. WellPoint is a Blue Cross or
Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee in 14 states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana,
Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin ; offer a
broad range of medical and specialty products.
1)R1R2 Redirection Project: WellPoint Information Management is proposing redirecting the current
Enterprise Data Layer (EDL) Release 1 (R1) data population procedures to an EDL R2/EDW Data Model.
WellPoint envisions decommissioning all the regional warehouses and source data directly from the
operational systems into the EDW. The data sourcing from all operational system would happen in
phased manner. Starting with Priority operational system, data would start loading in to R2 by next
year. So the approach for remaining operational systems is to source data from EDL R1 to R2. The
purpose of the R1-R2 Redirection project is to develop a detailed approach to source data for
operational systems from the regional warehouses directly to the EDW base model. Therefore EDL R1
physical database decommission can then be planned.

2) Direct Sourcing Project: The scope of the project is to load the Membership data from CS90
source system to Confirmed Staging Area (CSA). Membership data that is active from Jan 2004 and
forward has to be loaded into CSA. Data in CSA will then be loaded into EDW.
The on-going plan is to only load changed/new records to the EDW base model. Such records are
known to EDW as Delta Records. The loading of the delta records will reduce the volume of data
extracted and loaded on to the EDW base model and also will reduce any impact on the information
already in existence in the EDW table.
The membership data will be first loaded from the source system to a Conformed Staging Area (CSA)
and all the business transformation that are required will be applied to the data before it gets loaded
into CSA. CSA will be transient staging area and no history will be maintained.
The transformations from CSA to EDW will be the look up of CMS table to derive the codes for the
specific attributes in EDW tables. Additionally there are also tables in EDW where the data will be
populated from the other EDW tables after the CSA to EDW load is complete. These tables are referred
to as the Post load process tables.
