BSPE 4, Politics and Governance
Assignment #1

“POLITICS IS A DIRTY GAME”

Generally, as defined by Lexico, the activities associated with the governance of

a country or an area, especially the debate or conflict among other individuals or parties
having or hoping to achieve power is, what we all know, Politics. But the thing with
Politics, in my own very opinion, “People fighting for authority and power while
degrading and disregarding their duties as the leaders of the country while giving false
hopes for people to change their way of living and give a better future for the
community” - that is why I believe that politics is indeed a dirty game.

According to a movie called ‘House of Cards’, “The road to power is paved with
hypocrisy and casualties. Never regret!”. With this, we can say that politics is like a
game without any rules where people do things to please them and if they got the power
they wanted, they will use that against each other, against the people and possibly
against each other and aim for higher positions where they can get higher power and
dominance.

Furthermore, Politics has been with us since the day people voted for their leader
or what we call “democracy”. Since then, people who aim to become the leader of the
society tend to do all possible things they can do to possibly win the position. One of the
popular examples is vote-buying before or during the election where politicians, as well
as their subordinates, give money or cash to people in the hopes of returning the favor
by voting their advertised candidates where in fact they know for themselves that they
don’t have the assurance that people will really vote for their candidate.
Another one is the flashing or exposing co-candidates’ issues to downright
making a bad impression or image for that candidate. Issues have been the problem, for
most of us, but then the issue becomes a greater thing because of the reaction of the
affected party and what they do to deal with those accusations.

As a Filipino citizen, we have experienced many of these kinds of downgrading

other people but we tend to vote for them despite the issues we heard about them. We
end up believing their “promises” as if they were true enough to make us believe that
they can be an instrument for a change in our country. I can also observe that politicians
make politics as an investment of power and wealth because if they win an election,
they will still run for the position despite the accusations of people where in fact, some
of them are true.

Politics has influenced many people, families, and children in hopes of helping
them or making a better future for the people. Though we witnessed plenty of projects
being successfully implemented or done, we cannot hide the fact that the majority of the
proposed promises and projects of our politicians just plain promised, no intention of
making that promise come true. That is where corruption kicks in and the reality of
politicians becoming the number one corrupt government officials. That is why I strongly
believe that politics is a dirty game ruled by politicians - a simple statement but yet
undeniable the truth and reality especially here in the Philippines.
