Chapter I

Introduction

Background and Theoretical Framework of the Study

Change is unchanging; a state of permanence in temporary and shifting possibilities, so as

the world evolves and grows, we adapt, discover and develop inventions and knowledge in order

to cope and survive the world. Particularly in education in which the knowledge and ideas learned

from the past will be imparted for the future generations in order to push the horizon of man’s

understanding and eventually to create and invent ways in which can make our life easier and

help us survive.

In the advent of 21st century, in which everything becomes one click away as technology

advances therefore making all tasks and work completed quickly and efficiently, technology

supported us in every action and move we do in the daily basis, we rely greatly and almost entirely

in this tool. The modern society will not function without it but as it aids us greatly it seems it also

weighs us. Nowadays technology provides us unprecedented and unparalleled in flux of

entertainment such as electronic sports or online gaming in which a number of senior high school

students engage and invest deeply and heavily. Thus granting us a wide array of options in how we

use technology for other ways such as highly functional diversions rather than just its intended

purpose. In such it can be inferred that it can make things done faster but it also provides us

interruptions and distractions that can affect our performance particularly in education.

In contrast of the old curriculum in which technology is incorporated but not heavily

depended upon and education system is not paper less and laid ground to more up close and

personal way of teaching compared to the modern way of education of K to 12 in which

1

Senior High School Department

prioritizes efficiency and effectiveness in providing relevant information and knowledge thus

needs to integrate and made technology a vital part of senior high school students’ education but

also gives them a chance to expose themselves in electronic sports and online games.

According to (Chan & Rabinowitz, 2006),the amount of play can produce effects

regardless of game content by displacing time players spend in other activities. The amount of

game play has been associated with lower academic performance today; over 88% of young

people in the United States are addicted to video games. While According to (Samuel Gibbs.,

2016) playing computer games especially competitive games i.e. e-sports can affect your critical

thinking, problem solving and logic skills that can be applied in what you learn in the class and

thus increasing their grade in science and math mainly. In conclusion that e-sports has a

relationship with the k to 12 education of senior high students but it is profoundly debated to what

extent and the overall effect of this relationship.

This study is rooted in the theory that engagement in electronic sports or competitive

online gaming can have an evident effect to the academic performance of the senior high school

student, according to (Anderson & Dill, 2000) there is a negative correlation between GPA and

time spent playing video games However a 1997 study (Emes, 1997, p. 413) suggest that there is

no definitive effect in their relationship and results are contradictory.

Thus in conclusion it is necessary for the relationship between academic performance and

electronic sports engagement must be clearly defined or described in order for it to be factored as

an advantage or disadvantage.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

In order to determine the data and information to be authentic and legitimate, the
correlation of the level of e-sports engagement to the academic performance of senior high school
students of Iloilo City National High School will be confirmed and validated with the following
precursor studies that were conducted and gathered information from different locations both
local and foreign in varying degrees of interpretation and different methods of data gathering and
methodology which have a definite relation and resemblance that can aid in the development of
researcher’s current study.

prepare academically. This study noted that playing video games took time away from school
activities, homework, social interaction, etc. (2011, Study, Foreign)

Letter to the Editor: Video Game Addiction Grows

Video game addiction has begun to become a problem all over the
world. Children are becoming too dependent on video games, they will develop
an addiction to them, parents should be paying close attention the what games
their kids are playing, also as, parents should make plenty of other activities to
take up some of their children's time so they will not have to spend as much time
on games. (April 30, 2017, Literature, Foreign)

Editorial: Panorama - Addicted To Games?

Online games are not a cause of an addiction, the researchers interviewed those students
in their academic level on both sides of the argument, is that there is no evidence that games do
cause. The researchers also interviewed one of the student's Fathers, explains that while his son
plays games, he ''isn't addicted''. He can tell. Further proof of addiction in games comes from a
scientist who has been studying the subject, finds that their faces are different when they watch
television. That when a kid plays an on-line games, those kids often blink, as for television, kid’s
blinks normally. (December, 2010, Study, Foreign)

Effects of Computer Games on the Academic Performance of Students

Children and adults should have Cultural values deemed essential to a fulfilled life are

it altogether. Common , important and exciting portions of life like having a job , a family ,
friends and a love life come second to video games.(2011,Literature,Foreign)

Research Shows Games Have Significant Impact on Student Performance

Educators, parents and students are becoming increasingly more confident about the
viability and credibility of learning using digital games. In fact, they are demanding more options
within the genre. I’m optimistic that the next wave of game-based learning research will pay more
attention to 21st Century skills, include greater sample sizes, and that the number of research
studies themselves will increase. With a greater pool of valid research, the trust factor will
increase, and game developers will have in their toolkit more criteria for designing for learning
outcomes.( October 1, 2013, Literature, Foreign)

Effects of Computer Games to Young Students

Computers are part of our life and are a very important component in modern life.
Mostly, young people spend their time playing computer games to past time and this habits turn
to an addiction that has a tremendous effect on their academic performance. Therefore, necessary
precaution must be taken in exploring and the negative consequences of using them on a daily
basis, computer games has its own advantages and disadvantages. (February 23, 2016,

13
Department of Education

The following related literature and related studies conforms that there is a relationship
between level of e-sport engagement and academic performance in which the article written by
Bane or Boon ''computer games and academic performance) confirms that video gaming is
not bad for the health and the student's academic performance, because it is in the manner of the
students on how they interact with the games that they are playing. This was further established
that computer games have a positive effect in academic performance in the following articles
Students Who Play Online Games Actually Get Better Academic Result) and Online
gaming: Impact on the Academic performance and Social Behaviour of the students in
Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School in which computer games
increase immersion and engagement that it can develop analytical skills that can help in maths,
reading and science.

On the other hand there are also studies that dismisses the advantages of computer
gaming as it leads to addiction and takes up the time that supposedly need to be allocated for
studying, social interaction and other more wholesome activities in such extent that many articles
covered it in wide expanse such as Effects of Electronic Sports Engagement in Academic
Performance Of Senior High School Students and Impact of Computer Games on Students
GPA while there also studies that concluded that there are beneficial effects but it is greatly
overcompensated by the negative effects the computer gaming in such that there is an argument
in which it can develop analytical and high ordered thinking skills but it cannot be used in
productive and useful means because students are too addictive and focused at gaming , this
points are noted in the following articles The Effects of Video Game Play as Academic
Performance and Letter to the Editor: Video Game Addiction Grows.

Furthermore there also articles like Editorial: Panorama - Addicted To Games?,

Research Shows Games Have Significant Impact on Student Performance and Effects of
Computer Games to Young Students that have inconclusive results and cannot determine if
there is a negative or positive relation between levels of e-sports engagement and academic
performance.

Conclusion

`Therefore the researcher have made a conclusion that the studies gathered have almost
equal division to which three out of the ten review related literature and studies have made results
that indicate a positive correlation between level a of e-sports engagement and academic
performance, while the four out of ten results are negative and three out of ten are inconclusive
therefore from the data given it is established that there is a certain degree of relationship between
the level of e-sport engagement and academic performance but the parameters and ways to
describe and gauge the state and status of that said relationship; whether positive or negative
remained inconclusive and debated thus further analysis and research is needed to attain a
definite conclusion.
