§ Madurai District is having 145km route of National High ways 45A,B and
114 km route of State Highways and Rural High Ways roads.
§ The National Highway Authority has undertaken the work of widening all
the National Highways in this District
§ It will provide better infrastructure for transportation of goods and
movement of containers to the nearest Tuticorin Fort.
RAILWAY TRANSPORT
§ Madurai District is having Train routes to the distance of 82.95 km
Broad gauge, running between Madurai to Vadipatti, Silaiman and
Kallikudi.
§ Further Meter gauge route of 40km is available between Madurai to
Usilampatti.
§ Madurai is well connected with nearby Districts through railway lines.
§ Recently Railways have taken efforts to convert meter gauge to Broad
gauge line between Madurai to Vadipatti, which connects nearby Dindigul
District.

AIRPORT
§ Madurai District is well connected in Air route with important destinations.
§ One Airport is available in this District, which is located at Perungudi 15
kms away from Madurai.
§ The Government of India have taken efforts to modernize the Madurai
Airport and have plans to make it to the International Standards in order to
promote tourism.
ELECTRICITY
§ Madurai District is getting Electricity from “Tamilnadu Electricity Board” as
well as from a Private Electricity Company, namely “Madurai Power
Corporation, Samayanallur, Madurai.
§ The production capacity of Electricity generation is 105 MW.
§ Maximum requirement of Electricity 241 MVA

IRRIGATION
§ Madurai is getting water for Agricultural usage from Vaigai River and
Periyar River.
§ The Agriculture water is being released from 1 Reservoirs, namely viz.,
1. Sathaiyar Dam
§ There are 22 Nos. of system tanks, 6433 no. of PWD large tanks, 7183
Nos. of small tanks available in this District.
§ The net area irrigated is 68365 hectres.
§ There is another Reservoir at Viraganoor of Madurai District in the Vaigai

§ Madurai District is having large no. of hand looms and power looms for

§ Mulberry leaves are being cultivated in some of the areas for production of
cocoons.
§ Hence, there is scope for establishing Silk Reeling Center for
manufacturing of Silk yarn, in this District.

TEXTILE TESTING & DEVELOPMENT CENTRE
§ It is a joint venture programme of Textile Committee and Madurai
Spinners Association Trust, established under Public private partnership
scheme.
§ To strengthen Textile Industries particularly in the area of technology and
quality improvement with objective of making the Indian Textile Product
globally competitive.
§ The centre is located at 153, SIDCO at Kappalur Industrial Estate,
Madurai – 625 008
§ The Land & Building provided by Madurai Spinners Association Trust have
invested Rs.1 crore in land & building.
§ The Centre at Madurai is unique catering to the needs of the local textile
industry on spinning, weaving, processing, knit wear and garments in area
of testing, training, design development, Quality Control and machinery
maintenance under one roof.
IT PARK
§ Government of Tamilnadu have proposed to setup 2 nos. of TIDAL Park in
Madurai District.
§ Procurement of land for establishing the TIDAL Park is completed in
Ilanthaikulam Village with an area of 23 Acres and Vadapalanchi and
Kinnimangalam Village with an area of 217 Acres and 40 Acres
respectively.
§ The Government have entrusted the work to ELCOT, Chennai for taking
effective steps in implementing the project successfully. The Honorable
Chief Minister of Tamilnadu is going to lay the foundation stone on
24.03.2008 at Madurai.
§ This project will provide more employment opportunity for educated un
employed youth and rural people will also benefit out of the project.
INDUSTRIAL CLUSTER DEVELOPMENT SCHEME
§ The primary objective of the Cluster Development Scheme is to improve
international competitiveness of the domestic industry
§ The scheme aims to impure the Industrial clusters with high growth
potential.
§ The following infrastructure are covered under CDP
1. Common Excellent Infrastructure Facility
2. Common Testing Facility
3. Strengthening of R&D Institutions
§ District Industries Center will act as implementing agency for identification
and monitoring Industrial Clusters
§ In Madurai District 3 Clusters had been identified namely viz.,
1. CPS Milling Cluster
2. Madurai Rubber Cluster
3. Paper Machine Toys Cluster
CPS Milling Cluster:
CPS Milling Cluster project had been sanctioned for the project cost of Rs. 39.96
crore by Government of India for the establishment of physical infrastructure I, II
and III Bank contribution Rs. 3.99 Crore and the Association Member
Contribution is Rs. 6.0 Corers. Now, the construction work is in at roof level. The
project is under impletion stage and expected to be completed before December
2008. The remaining 2 clusters under progress and details of project cost is as
follows.
§ Government of India under IIUS – 2003, sanctioned the project. The
project has been implemented up to the expenditure of Rs. 23.62 Corers
out of the total above expenditure. Government of India has disbursed
grant of Rs. 17.91 Corers. SPV contributed an amount of Rs. 3.42 Corers
and State Bank of India; Madurai has released an amount of Rs. 2.28
Corers.
§ The project will be completed and will be put in to commercial use with
effect from 01.01.2009
Rubber Cluster:
§ After submission of diagnostic study report by ITCOT, the stakeholders
formed special purpose vehicle under title name of M/s. Rubber Park
Madurai for establishing the cluster development project.
§ They have established one Raw Material bank at Virattipathu. This raw
material depot will cater to the needs of Rubber Industry. Initially the
stakeholders invested Rs.5.00 lakhs in this depot and turn over expected
is around 25 corers. No land is identified till now. Equity not yet mobilized
for the Rubber Park so far.
§ Rubber Cluster: Raw Material Depot Formed in association with
MADITSSIA.
§ Stake holders: 5 Lakhs.
Paper Machine Cluster:
§ To organize group of artisans to take up activities for sustainable
development at Vilacheri.
§ To upgrade the skills through training and appropriate designs and
technology to produce items according to market need.
§ To provide adequate infrastructure supports for improved policy and
productivity.
§ To provide increased marketing avenue
§ The 1st Phase was completed for Rs. 2.37 lakhs towards Skill training and
Management training.
§ The proposal for design training under 2nd phases is in the pipeline at an
estimated cost of Rs. 2.63 lakhs. Further Poombukar has sanctioned and
allotted a sum of Rs.2.00 Lakhs as a first Installment for conducting 2nd
phase of training. The training institution of SIPPO has taken steps for
preparation of candidates for employment training.
AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRIES
§ Since Madurai is a Business Center and having large Automobile
component manufacturing industries, there is a need for setting up of
largescale industry in this automobile sector at Kappalur.
§ Madurai District is having the following infrastructure facilities
1. Automobile Population: Lakhs of automobiles are available in
and around Madurai District.
2. Auto Components Manufacturers: There are more than 300
nos of automobile spare parts dealers in Madurai District.
3. Rubber Components: There are more than 65 nos of rubber
components manufacturers in and Madurai District.
4. Body Building units: There are more than 40 bodybuilding units
in Madurai for automobiles.
5. Auto Dealers: There are nearly 10 nos. for car dealers in
Madurai city itself
6. Automobile Raw Materials: Raw materials such as paint, Iron
steel, tin sheets, Rubber sheets are available in Madurai.
Auto Components Manufacturers:
§ There are various Auto components required for automobiles ie. IC
Engine, forged press metal components, Radiator, Chasis, Wheels,
Springs, Silencers etc. There are more than 300 Nos. of automobile spare
parts dealers in Madurai.
§ Besides, the following largescale units are also functioning in Madurai
area doing auto parts manufacturing business.

Rubber Components Manufacturers:
§ There are more than 85 nos. of rubber components manufacturing units in
and around the Madurai city.
§ In addition to this one Rubber Bush kit unit is functioning at Madurai
namely “Manick Rubbers”. We have a proposal to set up a rubber
componentmanufacturing cluster here. The diagnostic study report is
ready. When the Rubber component Cluster comes up one Rubber
component park may also be established in Madurai.
Body Building Units:
§ There are more than 40 bodybuilding units functioning in Madurai, for
automobile four wheelers such as Bus, Lorry, and Van etc. Further more
than 50 nos. of workshops are functioning for auto rickshaws and 3
wheeler transport vehicles etc.
§ Some of the reputed Body builders are furnished below:

· Vinayaga etc.
§ Tyre Rebutton units such as Stanes, L.G.B. and T.V.S. are also in
Madurai.
§ More than 10 nos. of V.Belt, Fan Belt units are functioning apart from the

Auto Dealers:
There are nearly 10 nos. of Car dealers in Madurai city itself. Some of
them are as follows:

They are dealing with different types of cars such as Ambassadar, Tata

PROPOSED ESTATES
§ SIDCO, Madurai has proposed to set up New Industrial Estate at Kappalur
in addition to the existing Industrial Estates.
§ The proposed Estate will be located at S.No. 65 of Uchapatti Village
behind Thanapandian Polytechnic & PTR Engineering College to the
extend of 117 Acres and Thoppur Village belongs to TNHB near Missorier
Mill, NH to Austinpatty Village.
§ The proposal has already been recommended for Govt. approval &
Budget allocation for setting up of Industrial Estates.
§ SIDCO, Madurai has proposed to set up one Industrial Estate at
S.No. 27,28,30,35,36 of Sedapatti Village, Peraiyur tk,
INDUSTRIAL PARK
§ SIPCOT, Chennai has proposed to set up Industrial Park at
Valayankulam, Solanguruni, Nallur & Eliarpathi villages of Madurai South
Tk.
§ The proposed Industrial Park will be located in the above location to the
extend of 900 acres.
§ The Revenue Department has taken effective steps for procurement of
land in the above villages through Special Thasildhars as per order No.
175, Ind (SIPCOT.FA) Dept, Dated.02.07.07
§ Land procurement work for this project was commenced from 05.07.07.
§ Any type of General Industry can be started
§ Development of infrastructure facilities like Road, Water supply and
drainage system
§ 60% of total land for industrial purpose, 40% for development of
infrastructure facilities.
TEXTITLE PARK
§ Textile Committee, GOI, has proposed to establish the Textile Park at
Vadipatti to the total extend area of 112 Acres with project cost of
Rs. 87.86 Corer as announced on 31.12.07.
§ This park will promote the formation of Handloom & Power loom
Association & Clusters formation.
§ Textile Committee will provide subsidy of Rs. 35.00 Corer
§ This park will attract entrepreneurs to invest in Textile sector to the tune of
Rs. 410 corers.
§ It is expected that turn over of Rs. 900 corers will be achieved due to this
park.
§ Direct employment to 4000 persons and indirect employment 3000
persons will be provided.
INDUSTRIAL COOPERATIVE SOCIETY
§ Industrial Cooperative Societies are registered by the Register of Industrial
Cooperatives/Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries &
Commerce, Chennai5 under the provisions of Tamilnadu Cooperative
Societies Act,1983.
§ There are two types of societies namely Service and Production Society.
§ In Madurai District, there are 18 Industrial Cooperative societies in various
