Comparison to the collection of an academic library

The annotated bibliography included within this document provides detailed information

on suggested book titles for a comprehensive collection on the topic of political science in

Southeast Asia. These titles have been selected for a variety of reasons including currency,

importance, and relevancy. Given that Southeast Asia experienced a major economic downturn

in the 1990’s which required focus and revision by the political sphere, book titles published

after 2000 were given top priority. This list has been compared with the collection of the

Cleveland State University Library. This academic university was chosen because of an available

degree option offered by the school: “International Relations – Concentration in Asia.” Due to
Zimmer 5

the availability of this program, it was assumed that the university would have already acquired

the key titles on this specific topic. The following is an evaluation of Cleveland State

University’s (CSU) collection, its ease of use, and its comparison to the annotated bibliography

provided.

The Cleveland State University Library offers students a multitude of different ways to

local titles of similar subject matter. Users can search by keyword, Library of Congress subject

heading, title, author, or call number. Unfortunately, despite the variety of search options

available to users, it would appear that the university does not have a very exhaustive collection

of book titles about political science in Southeast Asia. The subject headings only provided less

than half a dozen titles of related topic. Because of this, it was also difficult to find titles in the

collection that are listed in physical proximity to one another through call number. The CSU

Library provided titles on politics in specific Southeast Asia nations such as Japan and China;

however it was difficult to find book titles that covered the entire geographical region. Of the

titles that I was able to locate, nearly all of them were already included in the annotated

bibliography. This does not imply that there was much overlap between CSU’s collection and the

bibliography for a comprehensive collection.

The Cleveland State University Library contained only four of the books that were listed

in the bibliography. These are:

Alagappa, Muthiah. Political Legitmacy in Southeast Asia: The Quest for Moral
Authority. Stanford University Press, 1995.

Ba, Alice D. (Re)negotiating East and Southeast Asia: Region, Regionalism, and the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Stanford University Press, 2009.

Gross, Max L. A Muslim archipelago: Islam and politics in Southeast Asia. National
Defense Intelligence College, 2007.
Zimmer 6

Hirsch, Philip and Carol Warren. The politics of environment in Southeast Asia:
resources and resistance. Routledge, 1998.

Noticeably, these are some of the older titles included in the bibliography; only one other

was published before 2000 that was not in CSU’s collection. As a librarian, I would infer that the

library had not updated their collection in quite some time. While these titles are preferred

resources on the topic of political science in Southeast Asia, it is disappointing that they are not

more current. Given the degree program offered by the university, it would be expected that

there would not only be a larger list of matches between the bibliography and the collection, but

that the titles would also be more current. Older titles may provide insight to students about the

history of this region, but students are then forced to use other means of obtaining relevant

information about more recent shifts and changes. CSU is a member of OhioLINK and provides

its students access to online systems such as EBSCOhost; this may be the reason why subject

librarians have deemed it unnecessary to expand the current collection. Given the proper

funding, however, it would be highly beneficial to students enrolled in the related degree

program if the library expanded its collection.

The following is a list of suggested titles and their cost. It is to be noted that although the

hypothetical budget of $5000 was offered for this project, it was deemed unnecessary to spend

all of the offered funding in order to create a complete collection. Instead, a proper subject-

specific collection could be created at an estimate of $2,694.
