toward particular targets. Bullying is divided into three basic types of abuse:

the emotional, mental and social. Bullying can exist between social groups,

social classes. Bullying in school and the workplace is also referred to as

peer abuse. Many students were getting involved to this problem and

affected by bullying. The purpose of the researchers why they study this

topic is to make the other people realize that too much bullied can cause an

effect to the students.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Everywhere, bullying happens. The most serious place where bullying

happen is at school. There are many places in school that bullying

happens, like hallways, restroom, classroom, canteen and others. School

bullying is a widespread issue which affects students in several ways.

Bullying in school sometimes consist of a group of students taking

advantage of or isolating one student in particular and gaining the loyalty of

witnesses, who, in some cases want to avoid becoming the next victim.

Bullying is one of the problems that the society is facing today. Although

the government sector implemented laws against bullying but still, the

cases of bullying getting higher. There are kinds of bullying but the

researches will focus in school bullying because most of the time children

are in school.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research might help the following people to know how to deal with the

problem of bullying and its obvious consequences and effects on the

students.

Students- This group may use this study as an example to bear in their

mind they are more luckier than those who are bullied even life is very

struggling because of economic problems, they are still send in the school

to learn by their parents. This study will encourage them to change their

attitude towards other people. It will serve as a medicine to cure the minds

of every individual to become open minded about the consequences of

their actions.

Researchers- The researchers in the near future ill make use of the results

of our present study. This study will serve as their basis and comparison to

their future study.

CHAPTER II

Review of related Literature and Studies

Local Literature

Bullying is the activity of repeated, aggressive behavior intended to hurt

another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterized by an

individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person

Norwegian researcher Dan Olweus defines bullying as when a person is

"exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one

or more other persons." He defines negative action as "when a person

intentionally inflicts injury or discomfort upon another person, through

physical contact, through words or in other ways". Bullying behavior may

include name calling, verbal or written abuse, exclusion from activities,

exclusion from social situations, physical abuse, or coercion. Bullies may

behave this way to be perceived as popular or tough or to get attention.

They may bully out of jealousy or be acting out because they themselves

are bullied. It has been noted that there tend to be differences in how
City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

bullying manifests itself between the sexes. Males tend to be more likely to

be physically aggressive whereas females tend to favour exclusion and

mockery, though it has been noticed that females are becoming more

physical in their bullying. There can be a tendency in both sexes to opt for

exclusion and mockery rather than physical aggression when the victim is

perceived to be too strong to attack without risk, or the use of violence

would otherwise cause problems for the bullies, or the bullies see physical

aggression as immature (particularly when bullying occurs among adults).

Some have argued that bullying can teach life lessons and instill strength.

Helene de Castro a child development academic, sparked controversy

when she argued that being a victim of bullying can teach a child "how to

manage disputes and boost their ability to interact with others," and that

teachers should not intervene, but leave children to respond to the bullying

themselves:( Besag, 1989) "[I]f boys or girls are able to stand up for

themselves, being attacked by enemies can help their development.

City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

Studies have shown that children become more popular among, and

respected by, teachers and fellow pupils if they repay hostility in kind. They

remember such experiences more vividly than friendly episodes, helping

them to develop healthy social and emotional skills."( Hamilton, 2004)

Foreign Literature

The word "bully" was first used in the 1530s meaning "sweetheart," applied

to either sex, from the Dutch boel "lover, brother," probably diminutive of

Middle High German buole "brother," of uncertain origin (compare with the

German buhle "lover"). The meaning deteriorated through the 17th century

through "fine fellow," "blusterer," to "harasser of the weak". This may have

been as a connecting sense between "lover" and "ruffian" as in "protector

of a prostitute," which was one sense of "bully" (though not specifically

attested until 1706). The verb "to bully" is first attested in 1710 (Zwerdling,

1987) High-level forms of violence such as assault and murder usually

City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

receive most media attention, but lower-level forms of violence such as

bullying have only in recent years started to be addressed by researchers,

parents and guardians, and authority figures (Whitted, K.S. & Dupper, D.R.

2005). It is only in recent years that bullying has been recognised and

recorded as a separate and distinct offence, but there have been well

documented cases that have been recorded over the centuries. The Fifth

Volume of the Newgate Calenda (Complete Newgate Calendar Tarlton Law

Library) contains at least one example where Eton Scholars George

Alexander Wood and Alexander Wellesley Leith were charged, at

Aylesbury Assizes, with killing and slaying the Hon. F. Ashley Cooper on

February 28, 1825 in an incident which might today be described as "lethal

hazing (George Alexander Wood and Alexander Wellesley Leith,2003) The

Newgate calendar contains several other examples that, while not as

distinct, could be considered indicative of situations of bullying. Virginia

Woolf considered fascism to be a form of bullying, and wrote of Hitler and

City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

the Nazis in 1934 as "these brutal bullies.( Zwerdling, 1987)

Related Studies

Mona O’Cornelios of the Anti-Bullying Centre at PUP College in has

written, "There is a growing body of research which indicates that

individuals, whether child or adult, who are persistently subjected to

abusive behavior are at risk of stress related illness which can sometimes

lead to suicide." Those who have been the targets of bullying can suffer

from long term emotional and behavioral problems. Bullying can cause

loneliness, depression, anxiety, lead to low self-esteem and increased

susceptibility to illness.[26] In the long term it can lead to Posttraumatic

Stress Disorder and an inability to form relationships - even leading to

celibacy. There is evidence that bullying increases the risk of suicide. It is

estimated that between 15 and 25 children commit suicide every year in the

UK alone, because they are being bullied.

CHAPTER III
Research Methodology and Procedure

As indicated in this chapter’s title, this chapter provides the research

design, research locale, and the statistical treatment of data applied in

response to the problems of the study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research design used by the group was Descriptive Research.

According to Wikipedia it is used to describe characteristics of a population

or phenomenon being studied. According to BYU linguistic department in

General Approach, unlike qualitative research descriptive research may be

more analytic. It often focuses on a particular variable or factor but both

aims to gather data without any manipulation of the research context. In

other words, descriptive research is non-intrusive and deals with naturally

occurring phenomena. Descriptive research may focus on individual

subjects and go into great depth and detail in describing them. It also

investigate large groups of subject through data collection and analysis

procedures. In addition, the conceptualizing of Descriptive research

City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

precedes the hypotheses of explanatory research. Descriptive research

and explanatory research fit together. Descriptive research is also known

as Statistical research. The main goal of this type of Research is to

describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea

behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, and other

statistical calculations. Although this research is highly accurate, it does not

gather the causes behind a situation. Descriptive research is mainly done

when a researcher wants to gain a better understanding of a topic. That is,

analysis of the past as opposed to the future.Descriptive research is the

exploration of the existing certain phenomena. The existing Phenomena’s

facts are not known to the person.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The researchers select to conduct their studies at the City University

of Pasay specifically in the Bachelor College of Science and Office

Administration students. Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay which known

now as City University of Pasay located at Pasadena Street, F.B. Harrison

City University of Pasay
College of Office Administration and Computer Technology

Pasay City was founded on May 26, 1994 by the virtue of city ordinance.

The constitution was conceptualized by Hon. Pablo N. Cuneta with the city

councilors and other local officials. Its major purpose was to provide quality

education at minimal cost to the less previleged but deserving students.

The school started with 384 students and 11 faculty members. Dr. Amor

Penalosa and Dr. Estela Portugal paved the way toward the recognition of

the university as an institution of higher learning leading to the approval of

programs by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). The Division of

City Schools, Pasay City played a significant role in the development of the

university; not only the consultative service but also personnel services

including the use of school facilities.

SAMPLES AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES USED

The population of this study was students from the College of Office

Administration, a sample of 200 students from the total population of more

than 800 Students in this research. The students of Office Administration

answer the Questionnaire that was given to them which the researches

considered it for the Collection of the data.

INSTRUMENTATION

The researchers focused in the students of Office Administration

From the City University of Pasay to acquire all the necessary information

in the study on the Bullying and its effects.

QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire was created after consulting our adviser. The

questionnaire was made up for two parts:

Part I of the questionnaire includes the profile of the respondents. We

formulated to get the background of the respondents based on their

gender, age, section and year level.

Part II of the questionnaire intended to collect data regarding the

respondents thought about how bullying affect to the people.

The questionnaire was prepared by the researchers with the help of the

adviser before they distributed it to the students.
