CONCEPT Compound sentences are made of two simple sentences or independent clauses
joined by coordinate conjunctions such as and, or, but, and so. They may be used
to show cause-and-effect relationship. Cause is the reason for action or being, while
effect is the result.

A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

earthquake – The strongest volcanic earthquake felt after the eruptive activity of
Taal Volcano intensified at 5:30 p.m on Sunday.
eruption – The volcano erupted again on the afternoon of January 12, 43 years after

wildlife – Australia’s wildlife decimated by wildfires.
bushfire - Record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought have
fuelled a series of massive bushfires across Australia.
crisis - The crisis between the US and Iran is far from over.

3. Pronunciation Drill
Have the pupils pronounced the words spelled.

2. REVIEW Pupils will pass the ball while the music plays. When it stops, the pupil holding the
ball will have to read and select the best answer that satisfies each particular
situation showed in the screen.

3. MOTIVATION Show a photo of Starla and Buboy to the children.

Ask: Who are the characters showed in the picture?


Describe their characters.
What did you feel while watching each episode of this teleserye?
What other scenes you were able to observe awareness?
If you were given a chance by Starla to wish (based from the problems that the
world is facing today), what would it be?

Infusion of Values:
Social awareness is defined as being aware of the problems that different societies
and communities face on a day-to-day basis and to be conscious of the difficulties
and hardships of society.

B. DEVELOPMENTAL
ACTIVITIES
1. PRESENTATION Show a video clip of the latest update of Taal Volcano.

The volcano belched a 50,000-feet-tall ash cloud which blanketed parts of Manila
and nearby areas so thousands of residents have fled Taal island.
Residents of Lipa, Batangas woke up to a hazy Monday morning because Taal
Volcano belched steam and ash Sunday.
Flights were postponed due to haze of Taal volcano.

Before identifying the cause and effect, have them read health effects of ash fall

Let the pupils read the transition words/ keywords.

Discuss using compound sentences to show cause-and-effect through the video and
powerpoint presentation.

2. ACTIVITIES
2.1 ACTIVITY 1 Guided Practice
Game: Tala Craze! (Integration of Music)
Divide the class into two according to their gender.
Instruct each group to read the compound sentences showed in the powerpoint
presentation and answer by writing the correct signal words in the illustration
board and raise it by singing and dancing steps of Tala.
The first group to showcase the correct answer will be the winner.
2.2 ACTIVITY 2 Independent Practice
Digital Quiz (ICT Integration)
Call a pupil to read the sentence flashed on the screen. Then let him/ her
manipulate the laptop in answering and checking the correct answer.
2.3 ACTIVITY 3 Cooperative Group Activity
Task Cards for each group.
Group 1: Sing the sentences (in any preferred tune) written in the task card and
complete with appropriate effect.
Group 2: Sing the sentences (in any preferred tune) written in the task card and give
possible cause.

prepositions.
