Bringing the world to the classroom

and the classroom to life
Bringing the world to the classroom
At National Geographic Learning, we believe education is one of the great transformative forces of this
century. Our mission is to bring the world to the classroom and the classroom to life, and for students and
their teachers to experience the excitement and joy of learning through our materials. With our English
language programs, students learn about their world by experiencing it. Through our partnerships with
National Geographic and TED, students develop the language and skills they need to be successful global
citizens and leaders.

Kira is a writer. She documents her travels by writing about the people she has met and the
places she has seen. How did she become all of these things?
This real, engaging, authentic content prepares learners
Kira wrote her first short story at the age of six. Her imagination always took her to wild
and exotic places. At age 19, she took her first solo trip, hoping to have new and unique ex-
periences. At age 20, while backpacking through Africa, she was kidnapped by soldiers and for the types of information-rich texts that they will
forced to “make a terrifying escape.” But this experience didn’t stop her. In fact, since then,
she has purposely traveled to more dangerous countries so she can tell the world about the
people who live there. encounter in academic courses.
Kira’s experiences empower her. Even though she has seen some terrible things, she is
still hopeful. Her goal is to find common ground with other people. “When you get beyond
politics and superficial cultural differences, people all want the same things: peace, happi-
ness, success for their children, and the best standard of life.” Kira is a writer, a traveler, and
an adventurer. But above all else, she is a human being. “When someone tells me I can't do
something, it just empowers me all the more. People's doubts in my ability only strengthen
my resolve. When they say I can't accomplish a challenge, I just eat that up.”

Meet WIOA goals with our adult

education programs
The new Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) expands the focus of English Language acquisition
programs. In addition to helping English language learners achieve competence in reading, writing, speaking, and
comprehension of the English language, programs must also help learners attain a secondary school diploma, transition
to post-secondary program, or integrate them into the workplace. ESL programs receiving funding through WIOA place
a stronger emphasis on career and work preparation.

Learners improve language proficiency and increase their employability skills with our materials.

e-Readers
For many students, e-readers are better than paper books. First, e-books are better for
students’ bodies. Before we had e-readers, students had to carry several heavy books with
them each day. However, e-readers are very light and usually weigh less than a pound, so
there is less stress on students’ bodies. Second, e-readers are also more convenient than a
regular book. They are wireless, so students can use them anywhere. They are easy to hold
and are clear even in bright sunlight. In addition, reading an e-reader is just like reading a
paper book, but they are more convenient because you do not have to turn the pages. My
friend has an e-reader, and she convinced me to buy one. Finally, buying a new ebook
