orthopedic internal fixation was prepd. by hot-press method in this work. We performed different surface modifications
on Mg-2Zn wires including micro-arc oxidn. (MAO) and chem. conversion using dopamine (DA), hydrogen fluoride acid

between wires and PLA matrix due to the strong electrostatic interaction and the micro-anchoring interaction according to
single wire pull-out expts. and mol. dynamic simulation. The surface roughness of wires after MAO is 192.0 ± 5.0 nm,
most of pore size are in the range of 0.5-1.5 µm and the av. interface thickness is about 1.5 µm. The essential reason
leading to the differences of interfacial bonding is revealed from at. level, which is useful for optimizing the prepn.
technol. of Mg-2Zn wires/PLA composite rod.

DOI:10.5897/IJPS2015.4412
Polyethylene (PE) films are widely used in packaging. PE is a thermoplastic manufd. from nonrenewable petroleum
resources. Due to its non-biodegradability, its films have posed serious pollution problems e.g. visual pollution, blockage
of gutters and drains, choking of animals etc. Suitable replacements for PE films esp. for single use only, are the starch
based thermoplastics such as Polylactic acid (PLA) which are fully biodegradable. This paper reports a comparison of
the viscoelastic properties of com. obtained PLA and PE films, and the degrdn. of the same under a composting
environment. The storage and loss moduli of PLA and PE films were detd. using the Dynamic mech. analyzer (DMA)
model 2980. The elastic modulus of PLA was found to be 2222.87 MPa at 50°C and amplitude of 10 µm. This is higher
than that of PE which was found to be 236.69 MPa at the same temp. and amplitude. Anal. of composting samples over
a time span of 36 days indicated a rapid loss of storage modulus of PLA with that of PE remaining fairly const. Overall,
the results suggest that PLA is a suitable substitute for PE in as far as tech. performance and degradability is concerned.

37. Performance properties, lactic acid specific migration and swelling by simulant of biodegradable poly(lactic
acid)/nanoclay multilayer films for food packaging
By Scarfato, Paola; Di Maio, Luciano; Milana, Maria Rosaria; Giamberardini, Silvia; Denaro, Massimo; Incarnato,

From Food Additives & Contaminants, Part A (2017), 34(10), 1730-1742. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1080/19440049.2017.1321786
The aim of the study was the development of a multifunctional, high-performance, fully biodegradable multilayer
polylactic acid (PLA) film for food packaging applications. In particular, sealable multilayer PLA-clay nanocomposite
systems with different layouts in terms of compn. and relative thickness of the layers, all consisting of a PLA-clay
nanocomposite layer between two pure PLA layers for direct food contact, were designed and produced by blown film co-
extrusion. The films obtained were analyzed for their morphol., functional properties and lactic acid (LA)-specific
migration in 50% ethanol. The results showed that, with respect to the unfilled multilayer system, taken as a ref., the
nanocomposite films had significant improvements, up to about 40%, in their barriers to oxygen and tensile strengths,
and resulted in being more easily sealable over a wide heat-sealing temp. range (80-100°C) with higher seal strength.
Moreover, all films had LA migrations always well below the former generic overall migration limit of 60 mg kg-1 food (10
mg dm-2) of European Union Regulation No. 10/2011 (deleted by the amending Regulation No. 2016/1416), even if their
morphol. was strongly modified during the migration tests due to the strong swelling action of the used simulant (simulant
D1 = 50% ethanol (aq.) (vol./vol.)) towards PLA.

(MSCs) built using water-sol. (i.e., phys. transient) metal (W, Fe, and Mo) electrodes, a biopolymer, hydrogel electrolyte
(agarose gel), and a biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) substrate, encapsulated with polyanhydride. During
repetitive charge/discharge cycles, the electrochem. performance of these unusual MSCs is dramatically enhanced,
following from the role of pseudocapacitance that originates from metal-oxide coatings generated by electrochem.
corrosion at the interface between the water-sol. metal electrode and the hydrogel electrolyte. Systematic studies reveal
the dissoln. kinetics/behaviors of each individual component of the MSCs, as well as those of the integrated devices. An
encapsulation strategy that involves control over the thickness, chem., and mol. wt. of the constituent materials provides
a versatile means to engineer desired functional lifetimes. Demonstration expts. illustrate potential applications of these
biodegradable MSCs as transient sources of power in the operation of light-emitting diodes and as charging capacitors in

47. Analysis of the time course of degradation for fully biobased nonwoven agricultural mulches in compost-
enriched soil
By Dharmalingam, Sathiskumar; Hayes, Douglas G.; Wadsworth, Larry C.; Dunlap, Rachel N.
From Textile Research Journal (2016), 86(13), 1343-1355. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1177/0040517515612358
The time course of degrdn. for biodegradable and fully biobased plastic agricultural mulches prepd. from polylactic acid
(PLA) and PLA-polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) blends using meltblown (MB) nonwovens processing technol. in compost-
enriched soil during a 45 wk burial duration was investigated under controlled conditions in a greenhouse to better
understand the underlying mechanism for degrdn. Mulches underwent an initial 4 wk period during which the tensile
strength decreased by ≥60%. For MB-PLA, between weeks 4 and 12, the crystallinity increased and the mol. wt. slightly
increased. After 12 wk, the mol. wt. decreased linearly. At 28 wk, the crystallinity increased significantly, corresponding
to an obsd. increase of macroscopic fragmentation. For MB-PLA+PHA, the mass fraction of PHA decreased significantly
(by 11.6%) during the first 4 wk; subsequently; the PHA fraction decreased linearly. Between 17 and 22 wk, a large
increase of crystallinity for the PLA component and a decrease of mol. wt. occurred. After 22 wk, the mol. wt. and
crystallinity of PLA increased nearly linearly. These results suggest that during the first 4-12 wk, microorganisms begin
to utilize the more readily available components of the mulches as carbon sources: amorphous PLA regions and PHA for
MB-PLA and PLA+PHA, resp., and that microbial activity is greater and occurs more strongly for PHA. After the initial
induction period, depolymn. occurs slowly and steadily for both MB plastic mulches.

performed. Partial least squares (PLS) models were developed based on each spectroscopy for quant. detn. of the
concns. The data suggested that MIR and Raman have an advantage over NIR in terms of qual. recognition of the three
compns. The data also showed that Raman and NIR succeeded in detg. the concns., while the concn. detd. via MIR was
inaccurate. Hence, Raman is the optimal anal. tool for qual. characterization and quant. detn. of the compns. in fully
biodegradable PLA/PPC/PBAT blends. The characteristic bands in the Raman spectra clearly identify PLA, PPC, and
PBAT to be 392 cm-1 (δ CCO), 948 cm-1 (ν C-O-C) and 1600 cm-1 (ν C = C in benzene ring), resp. The optimal
calibration models based on Raman for PLA, PPC, and PBAT exhibited root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP)

Objectives: Scaffolds (SC) composed of poly(D,L-lactide) and β-tricalcium phosphate of variable pore structures were
manufd. by selective laser melting (SLM), which allowed the prodn. of porous interconnected structures promoting
cellular adhesion and vascular proliferation. Biocompatibility, rate of osseointegration and new bone formation (NB) were
analyzed. Material and methods: Powder based on the material compn. was selective melted by a laser beam allowing
layer-by-layer prodn. Pore size and biocompatibility were tested with mesenchymal stem cells (rMSC) and Saos 2 cells
that were cultivated on SCs showing better proliferation, without toxicity, than controls. SCs with a 600- to 700-µm pore
diam. proved ideal for fast and reliable cellular and vascular supply throughout the interconnecting pore system. Jaw and
calvarial crit.-size defects (CSD) with diams. of 5 or 16 mm were drilled in rats and either SLM test SCs (pore diam. 600
µm) or the previously removed autologous bone as controls were (re-) implanted. Results: The SC in vivo led to
complete bone ingrowth with minimal inflammatory reaction adjacent to and within the CSD as compared with controls.
The SC promoted the differentiation of rMSC into osteoblasts, revealing osteoinductive properties. Promising NB
ingrowth of the material was also obtained in the animal study. Conclusion: The SC showed complete bony replacement
within 30 days in all rats; this ingrowth was significantly superior to that of controls and revealed no signs of significant
foreign body reaction. Because of continuous replacement by bone this material compn. is ideal for SCs fitting 3D bone
defects. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part B: Appl Biomater, 2016.

Fully bio-based and biodegradable materials, such as polylactic acid (PLA) and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), are
considered in order to produce a completely renewable packaging soln. for oxygen barrier applications, even at medium-
high relative humidity (R.H.). Thin layers of MFC were coated on different PLA substrates by activating film surface with
an atm. plasma treatment, leading to the fabrication of robust and transparent multilayer composite films, which were
then characterized by different exptl. techniques. UV transmission measurements confirmed the transparency of
multilayer films (60% of UV transmission rate), while SEM micrographs showed the presence of a continuous, dense and
defect free layer of MFC on PLA surface. Concerning the mech. behavior of the samples, tensile tests revealed that the
multilayer films significantly improved the stress at break value of neat PLA. Moreover, the oxygen barrier properties of
the multilayer films were improved more than one order of magnitude compared to neat PLA film at 35 °C and 0% R. H.
and the permeability values were maintained up to 60% R. H. The obtained materials therefore showed interesting
properties for their possible use in barrier packaging applications as fully biodegradable soln., coupling two primarily
incompatible matrixes in a multilayer film with no need of any solvent or chem.

DOI:10.1016/j.polymertesting.2015.11.004
Biodegradable polymeric blends based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and polylactic acid (PLA) were prepd. by melt
mixing. Trybutyrin, a bio-based plasticizer, was added at a fixed proportion in all blends. Crystal structure, percent
crystallinity, miscibility, mech. properties and permeation of fully biodegradable PHB/PLA blends were investigated in
detail by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Fourier Transformed IR Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD),
SEM, tensile tests and water vapor permeation tests. From the thermal test, two glass transition temps. were found for
the whole range of compns., which reveals the immiscibility between PHB and PLA. Moreover, the biphasic melt further
confirms this fact. Tensile tests showed an increase in the elongation at break with the PLA content. SEM images reveal
debonding between the interfacial surfaces, which justifies the increase in the elongation at break. Water vapor
permeation values for blends were slightly higher than that of the plasticized pristine polymer. The plasticized polymer
blends showed valuable properties to extend the applications of PHB and PLA.

A review, with 50 refs. Research and development of biodegradable materials is one of the effective approaches to solve
the environmental pollution problems which come from the traditional petroleum-based plastics. Polylactic acid(PLA) has
so many good properties such as full biodegradability, good thermal processibility, renewablility, high mech. performance
and so on. It is an inevitable trend to replace the petroleum-based plastics. However, the properties of hydrophobicity,
poor toughness and high price are obstacles for the application of PLA. All of these result in attracting much attention in
the research of modification of PLA. In this paper, the recent research on biodegradable PLA system including blending
with natural polymer and synthetic polymer is summarized. The effect of processing technol., surface treatment and
additives on the composite material is presented. Further research could be flexible polymer, surfactant, and various
fibers to improve the brittleness, compatibility, and strength of the composite material.

82. From Nanofibrillar to Nanolaminar Poly(butylene succinate): Paving the Way to Robust Barrier and
Mechanical Properties for Full-Biodegradable Poly(lactic acid) Films

DOI:10.1021/acsami.5b00294
The traditional approach toward barrier property enhancement
of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is the incorporation of sheet-like fillers
such as nanoclay and graphene, unfortunately leading to the
sacrificed biocompatibility and degradability. Here we unveil
the first application of a confined flaking technique to establish
the degradable nanolaminar poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) in
PLA films based on PLA/PBS in situ nanofibrillar composites.
The combination of high pressure (10 MPa) and appropriate
temp. (160 °C) during the flaking process desirably enabled
sufficient deformation of PBS nanofibrils and retention of
ordered PLA channels. Particularly, interlinked and individual
nanosheets were created in composite films contg. 10 and 20
wt % PBS, resp., both of which presented desirable alignment
and large width/thickness ratio (nanoscale thickness with a
width of 428 ± 13.1 and 76.9 ± 8.2 µm, resp.). With the
creation of compact polymer "nano-barrier walls", a dramatic
decrease of 86% and 67% in the oxygen permeability coeff.
was obsd. for the film incorporated with well-organized 20 wt %
PBS nanosheets compared to pure PLA and pure PBS (1.4
and 0.6 × 10-14 cm3·cm·cm-2·s-1·Pa-1), resp. Unexpectedly,
prominent increases of 21% and 28% were achieved in the
tensile strength and modulus of composite films loaded 20 wt
% PBS nanosheets compared to pure PLA films, although PBS
intrinsically presents poor strength and stiffness. The unusual
combination of barrier and mech. performances established in
the fully degradable system represent specific properties
required in packaging beverages, food and medicine.

83. Soil Degradation of Polylactic Acid/Polyhydroxyalkanoate-Based Nonwoven Mulches

By Dharmalingam, Sathiskumar; Hayes, Douglas G.; Wadsworth, Larry C.; Dunlap, Rachel N.; DeBruyn, Jennifer M.;
Lee, Jaehoon; Wszelaki, Annette L.
From Journal of Polymers and the Environment (2015), 23(3), 302-315. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1007/s10924-015-0716-9
The soil degrdn. of fully biobased agricultural mulches prepd. from polylactic acid (PLA) and blends of PLA and poly3-
hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate (polyhydroxyalkanoate, or PHA) using nonwoven textile technol. was compared to
that of a com. biodegradable mulch film, BioTelo (Dubois Agrinovation, Waterford, Canada). The addn. of PHA to PLA to
the feedstock blend produced nonwovens that possessed lower tensile strength and mol. wt. and increased the av. fiber
diam. of mulches. A meltblown (MB) nonwoven mulch prepd. from a PLA-PHA 72/28 wt./wt. blend underwent the
greatest degrdn., achieving a 78 % loss of tensile strength and a 25.9 % decrease of wt.-averaged mol. wt. during 10 and
30 wk of soil burial, resp. The mass fraction of PHA decreased during soil burial, suggesting the preferential microbial
assimilation of PHA over PLA. BioTelo underwent a 29 % loss of tensile strength but no appreciable change of mol. wt.
for its chloroform-sol. components. In contrast, spunbond (SB) PLA mulches did not undergo any appreciable degrdn.
during the 30 wk soil burial studies. The results suggest that the MB-PLA + PHA nonwoven may serve as a potentially
valuable biodegradable agricultural mulch, and that SB-PLA may be useful as a compostable material for long-term
agricultural applications, such as row covers and landscape fabrics. A soil degrdn. study of MB-PLA + PHA that directly
compared untreated compost-enriched soil to sterilized soil-compost mixt. demonstrated that the loss of tensile strength
occurred only in the unsterilized soil, suggesting this event is directly assocd. with soil microorganisms.

90. Fully biodegradable composites: Use of poly-(butylene-succinate) as a matrix and to plasticize L-poly-

From Industrial Crops and Products (2015), 64, 251-257. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1016/j.indcrop.2014.09.033
To take advantage of the mech. performance of plant fibers and avoid their degrdn., it is necessary to develop
biocomposites by working on the least aggressive process conditions possible. The use of thermoplastic polymers with
low processing temps. is one possible way. In this study, tests were performed on poly-(butylene-succinate) (PBS) flax
composite, extruded and injected at 140°. They have a good level of tensile or impact properties compared to poly-
(propylene) (PP) or L-poly-(lactide) (PLLA) based biocomposites. Nanoindentation measurements were performed in
situ on the composites. Despite the low Young's modulus of PBS, it was shown that the use of a moderate process
temp. limits the downward stiffness of the flax cell walls. Finally, it was demonstrated that the PBS could be assocd. with
PLLA for making flax fiber reinforced biocomposites. The introduction of PBS, with adjustable vol. fractions, improves
elongation at break and impacts on the behavior of PLLA-flax composites, while retaining high performance mech.
properties. Thus, it is possible to elaborate fully biodegradable composites with the desired mech. properties.

106. Head-to-Head Comparison of a Drug-Free Early Programmed Dismantling Polylactic Acid Bioresorbable
Scaffold and a Metallic Stent in the Porcine Coronary Artery: Six-Month Angiography and Optical Coherence
Tomographic Follow-Up Study
By Durand, Eric; Sharkawi, Tahmer; Leclerc, Guy; Raveleau, Marine; van der Leest, Machiel; Vert, Michel; Lafont,

From Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions (2014), 7(1), 70-79. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1161/CIRCINTERVENTIONS.113.000738
BACKGROUND-: We aimed to evaluate a new drug-free fully bioresorbable lactic acid-based scaffold designed to allow
early dismantling synchronized with artery wall healing in comparison with a bare metal stent (BMS). METHODS AND
RESULTS-: Twenty-three BMS (3.0×12 mm) and 36 lactic acid-based bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS, 3.0×11 mm) were
implanted in porcine coronary arteries. QCA and optical coherence tomog. analyses were performed immediately after
implantation and repeated after 1, 3, and 6 mo. Microcomputed tomog. was used to detect scaffold dismantling.
Polymer degrdn. was evaluated throughout the study. The primary end-point was late lumen loss, and the secondary
end-points were scaffold/stent diam. and acute recoil. Acute recoil was low and comparable between the BRS and the
BMS groups (4.6±6.7 vs. 4.6±5.1%; P=0.98). BRS outer diam. increased significantly from 1 to 6 mo indicating late pos.
scaffold remodeling (P<0.0001), whereas BMS diam. remained const. (P=0.159). Late lumen loss decreased
significantly from 1 to 6 mo in the BRS group (P=0.003) without significant difference between BRS and BMS groups at 6
mo (P=0.68). Microcomputed tomog. identified BRS dismantling starting at 3 mo, and wt.-av. molar masses of scaffold
parts were 20% and 14% of their initial values at 3 and 6 mo. CONCLUSIONS-: BRS and BMS have similar 6-mo
outcomes in porcine coronary arteries. Interestingly, BRS dismantling was detected from 3 mo and resulted in late lumen
enlargement by increased scaffold diam. at 6 mo.

From Composites, Part B: Engineering (2014), 56, 717-723. Language: English, Database: CAPLUS,
DOI:10.1016/j.compositesb.2013.09.012
Polymer composites were fabricated with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and cellulosic natural fibers combining the wet-laid fiber
sheet forming method with the film stacking composite-making process. The natural fibers studied included hardwood
high yield pulp, softwood high yield pulp, and bleached kraft softwood pulp fibers. Composite mech. and thermal
properties were characterized. The incorporation of pulp fibers significantly increased the composite storage moduli and
elasticity, promoted the cold crystn. and recrystn. of PLA, and dramatically improved composite tensile moduli and
strengths. The highest composite tensile strength achieved was 121 MPa, nearly one fold higher than that of the neat
PLA. The overall fiber efficiency factors for composite tensile strengths derived from the micromechanics models were
found to be much higher than that of conventional random short fiber-reinforced composites, suggesting the fiber-fiber
bond also pos. contributed to the composites strengths.

The tearing and rheol. properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(ethylene glutaric-co-terephthalate) copolyester (FP)
blends were investigated using a wide range of blending ratios. The tearing strength values of PLA/FP were always
significantly higher than that of the PLA specimen. The melt flow indexer and capillary rheometer analyses indicated that
the viscous flow became difficult and the melt strength of PLA was improved after the addn. of FP. The interactions
between the mol. chains of PLA and FP adds FP branching and lengthens the macromol. chains and the degree of
macromol. entanglement increases. The blends with 5 wt% FP reached the max. melt strength and min. flow index n,
while the tearing strength approached the max. level. At higher FP contents, the melt flow properties PLA/FP blends
increased and the melt strength decreased, the tearing strength of PLA/FP blends also decreased.

Implantation of current used bare metal stent, metal drug-eluting stent, or alloy stent would result in local intimal
hyperplasia, thrombosis and increase incidence of adverse cardiovascular event. Therefore, the development and
prepn. of high mol. polymer biodegradable stent has aroused increasing attention. The behavior and histocompatibility of
novel fully biodegradable material of poly trimethylene carbonate-co-d,l-lactide (PDLLA/TMC) in vivo were studied. The
early-stage synthesized materials of PDLLA/TMC (50/50) were used in the expt. group and the PLLA/TMC (50/50) and
PLLA in the control. The patches of each kind of the three polymers above were implanted into the s.c. tissue of the 144
Wistar mouse with equal gender, six months old. The polymers patches and their surrounding tissues were taken out
and weighed and sliced for hematoxylin-esoin staining at the phases of different test time. Their biodegradable
behaviors in vivo were tested by the methods of size exclusion chromatog. (SEC), gel permeation chromatog. (GPC),
NMR (NMR) and environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM), and their histocompatibility was evaluated by
inflammation cells counting in quantity with light microscope. In the first 60 days of implantation, there was no significant
difference in the percentage of mass loss among the three groups, and their velocity of degrdn. was relatively slow,
though it was slightly faster in the PDLLA/TMC than in the PLLA/TMC and PLLA. During the 60 days to 180 days,
PDLA/TMC degrdn. velocity accelerated obviously, and its percentage of mass loss was much higher than the other two
polymers. At 180 days, most of the PDLLA/TMC degraded while the PLLA/TMC and PLLA degraded less. When the
three polymers were implanted into the mouse body, at first their mol. declined rapidly, then the decline went into a slow
stage gradually. With the time extended, their smooth and orderly superficial structure transformed into ruffle, twist,
turbulent, full of hole and hollow, which was rather obvious in the polymer of PDLLA/TMC. Also, there were relative

Bamboo fiber may withhold great potential as an alternative to wood, and bamboo can be a raw material to fabricate a
composite material and its applicability is being widely investigated. Cellulose fibers can be aligned to the length of the
bamboo providing max. tensile and flexural strengths and rigidity. Increased research in the recent years has
considerably contributed to the use of bamboo fibers as a reinforcing material for broader applications. However, it is
difficult to obtain polymer/bamboo fiber composite having its excellent mech. properties, because the bamboo fibers
covered with lignin show lack of interfacial adhesion. Therefore, it is necessary to enhance the interfacial adhesion by
extg. lignin without microstructure disruption and adding silane coupling agents. In this research the influence of silane
coupling agent, composites with pristine bamboo fiber, delignified bamboo fiber, and delignified and silane treated
bamboo fiber were newly prepd. and investigated, resp.

143. Tensile behavior of full-biodegradable PLA/PPC/starch blending film

By Xie, Fei; He, Jiangchuan
From Huagong Xinxing Cailiao (2011), 39(1), 79-80, 116. Language: Chinese, Database: CAPLUS
Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) was blended with poly (propylene carbonate) (PPC), a copolymer of carbon dioxide and
alkyleneoxide, and modified starch in solvent and a blending film with improved toughness was obtained. Tensile tests of
the films with different blending compns. showed that 30% glycol added during the starch gelatinization optimized the
properties of the end blending film; and the failure elongation and the toughness of the film improved with the increasing
of the mass ratio of PPC. But the ratio of PPC should be controlled under certain value since too much of it might
decrease the stretching strength of the blending films. As a whole, the ternary blending film of PLA/PPC/modified starch
(with the mass ratio of glycol/starch at 3/7) showed an optimized elongation at failure and consequently the toughness
was distinguished improved when the mass ratio of three components was 60: 20: 20, without sharp decrease of
stretching strength.

Bioabsorbable materials are of great interest for bone regeneration applications, since they are able to degrade gradually
as new tissue is formed. In this work, a fully biodegradable composite material contg. polylactic acid (PLA) and calcium
phosphate (CaP) sol. glass particles has been characterized in terms of surface properties and cell response. Cell
cultures were performed in direct contact with the materials and also with their exts., and were evaluated using the MTT
assay, alk. phosphatase activity, and osteocalcin measurements. The CaP glass and PLA were used as ref. materials.
No significant differences were obsd. in cell proliferation with the exts. contg. the degrdn. byproducts of the three
materials studied. A relation between the materials wettability and the materialcell interactions at the initial stages of
contact was obsd. The most hydrophilic material (CaP glass) presented the highest cell adhesion values as well as an
earlier differentiation, followed by the PLA/glass material. The incorporation of glass particles into the PLA matrix
increased surface roughness. SEM images showed that the heterogeneity of the composite material induced morphol.
changes in the cells cytoskeleton.

169. Performance properties, lactic acid specific migration and swelling by simulant of biodegradable poly(lactic
acid)/nanoclay multilayer films for food packaging
By Scarfato Paola; Di Maio Luciano; Incarnato Loredana; Milana Maria Rosaria; Giamberardini Silvia; Denaro Massimo
From Food additives & contaminants. Part A, Chemistry, analysis, control, exposure & risk assessment (2017), 34(10),
1730-1742, Language: English, Database: MEDLINE
The aim of the study was the development of a multifunctional, high-performance, fully biodegradable multilayer
polylactic acid (PLA) film for food packaging applications. In particular, sealable multilayer PLA-clay nanocomposite
systems with different layouts in terms of composition and relative thickness of the layers, all consisting of a PLA-clay
nanocomposite layer between two pure PLA layers for direct food contact, were designed and produced by blown film
co-extrusion. The films obtained were analysed for their morphology, functional properties and lactic acid (LA)-specific
migration in 50% ethanol. The results showed that, with respect to the unfilled multilayer system, taken as a reference,
the nanocomposite films had significant improvements, up to about 40%, in their barriers to oxygen and tensile
strengths, and resulted in being more easily sealable over a wide heat-sealing temperature range (80-100°C) with
higher seal strength. Moreover, all films had LA migrations always well below the former generic overall migration limit
of 60 mg kg(-1) food (10 mg dm(-)(2)) of European Union Regulation No. 10/2011 (deleted by the amending Regulation
No. 2016/1416), even if their morphology was strongly modified during the migration tests due to the strong swelling
action of the used simulant (simulant D1 = 50% ethanol (aq.) (v/v)) towards PLA.

Fully biodegradable L-polylactic acid stents (biodegradable vascular scaffold, BVS), the latest breakthrough in the area
of coronary implants, entered clinical trials in 2005 and became commercially available in 2011. Optical coherence
tomography (OCT) was used from the first implants to study the vessel wall response and the timing of the resorption
process in man. Analysis of BVS with OCT has several advantages over that of metallic stents. BVS polymeric struts
are transparent to the light so that scaffold integrity, apposition to the underlying wall, presence of thrombus and
hyperplasia, and changes in the strut characteristics over time can be easily studied. We present a comprehensive
review of the findings OCT provided when used as a research tool in serial examination up to five years for
investigation of the mechanism of resorption, neointimal coverage, shrinkage and late lumen enlargement. We also
report our experience with OCT in 47 lesions of various complexity as a practical means of percutaneous coronary
intervention guidance during BVS implantation.

171. Surface characterization and cell response of a PLA/CaP glass biodegradable composite material
By Navarro M; Engel E; Planell J A; Amaral I; Barbosa M; Ginebra M P
From Journal of biomedical materials research. Part A (2008), 85(2), 477-86, Language: English, Database: MEDLINE
SciFinder® Page 50
Bioabsorbable materials are of great interest for bone regeneration applications, since they are able to degrade
gradually as new tissue is formed. In this work, a fully biodegradable composite material containing polylactic acid
(PLA) and calcium phosphate (CaP) soluble glass particles has been characterized in terms of surface properties and
cell response. Cell cultures were performed in direct contact with the materials and also with their extracts, and were
evaluated using the MTT assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, and osteocalcin measurements. The CaP glass and
PLA were used as reference materials. No significant differences were observed in cell proliferation with the extracts
containing the degradation by-products of the three materials studied. A relation between the materials wettability and
the material-cell interactions at the initial stages of contact was observed. The most hydrophilic material (CaP glass)
presented the highest cell adhesion values as well as an earlier differentiation, followed by the PLA/glass material.
The incorporation of glass particles into the PLA matrix increased surface roughness. SEM images showed that the
heterogeneity of the composite material induced morphological changes in the cells cytoskeleton.

172. Body distribution of fully biodegradable [14C]-poly(lactic acid) nanoparticles coated with albumin after
parenteral administration to rats
By Bazile D V; Ropert C; Huve P; Verrecchia T; Marlard M; Frydman A; Veillard M; Spenlehauer G
From Biomaterials (1992), 13(15), 1093-102, Language: English, Database: MEDLINE

Fully biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) nanoparticles (90-250 nm) coated with human serum albumin (HSA) were
prepared by high-pressure emulsification and solvent evaporation, using the protein as surfactant. A new analytical
tool was developed, based on Mie's law and size exclusion chromatography, to establish that, after evaporation of the
solvent, the protein saturates the surface of the nanoparticles, masking the PLA core. According to this technique, no
HSA is encapsulated in the polymer matrix. A radiolabelled [14C]-PLA50 was synthesized to follow the fate of this new
drug carrier after i.v. administration to rats. The time necessary to clear the albumin-coated nanoparticles from the
plasma was significantly longer than for the uncoated ones but not extended enough to target cells other than
mononuclear phagocytes. As deduced from whole-body autoradiography and quantitative distribution experiments, the
14C-labelled polymer is rapidly captured by liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and peritoneal macrophages.
Nanoparticle degradation was addressed following 14C excretion. The elimination of the 14C was quick on the first
day (30% of the administered dose) but then slowed down. In fact, if the metabolism of the PLA proceeds to lactic acid
which is rapidly converted into CO2 via the Krebs cycle (80% of the total excretion was fulfilled by the lungs),
anabolism from the lactic acid may also have taken place leading to long-lasting radioactive remnants, by incorporation
of 14C into endogenous compounds.
