WELCOME
TO OUR
SALARY GUIDE
RONAN COLLERAN
CEO AZON RECRUITMENT GROUP

We’ve reached the end of a decade where Ireland began on a

definitive low and ended on a relative high. Now as we move
forward, the question is can the success of rejuvenating the
economy be sustained in this unstable period. Looking back
at the last year, we can see an increasing ability to deal with
change and be flexible for both people and organisations, the
rise of non-traditional business models and the evolution of
how people work.

4
Of course any retrospective on 2019 is impossible to write about
without invoking the issue of Brexit. Chief among the drivers in
that change and flexibility, Brexit has introduced an ongoing layer
of uncertainty into planning for the future. What is clear is Brexit
will be an ongoing process of negotiation for many years to come.
Even as we benefit from the relocation of many finance and funds
organisations, being prepared for a mild shock post-Brexit has to be
accounted for.

There are other developments on the horizon which are going to

demand that organisations be flexible and ready for change. Being
ready for the future of rapidly progressing technology, automation
and AI in particular, is going to be a key component of staying ahead
of the curve for business leaders. This year we have seen large
investments in these areas, particularly from the accounting firms
and this is a trend that will continue.

Who is taking advantage of the ever increasing pace of change?

In the banking space, we see fintech and alternative lending go
from fringe, risky propositions to become mainstream and with
the advantage of having no legacy issues to deal with, unlike their
counterparts in the pillar banks. Irish pharma, especially in the
biotech space is a hotbed of groundbreaking research into genomes.
Big tech giants that didn’t exist 20 years ago now dominate
our lives and the business landscape. As ever, the multinational
FAANG+ (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix and Google) giants are
aggressively acquiring new startups to ensure they are keeping
ahead of the curve while continuing to drive the conversation on
employee hiring and retention.

At Azon we are focused on delivering intelligent advice in an open,

consultative process with you. I hope in these changing times this
guide can help you make informed decisions about your career or
your team.

10
MARKET INTELLIGENCE

- There has been a continued increase in front

office revenue generating roles such as
Portfolio Management and Sales and Trading.
This is expected to grow significantly as the
impact of Brexit plays out and the relocation
of business continues.

- As there has been a number of banks who

have chosen to relocate their European
headquarters to Dublin, this trend should
continue and we should see an increased
demand for front office talent.

“2019 has been a really buoyant year, it is very difficult to get
skilled governance professionals. There’s never been a better
time to be in governance.”
John Burns, Business Development Manager,
The Chartered Governance Institute.

MARKET INTELLIGENCE

- Across support roles, demand has further increased in both private practice
and in-house for experienced talent. Legal Executives and Paralegals with
litigation and conveyancing experience tend to be in the most demand due to
the increasing levels of construction activity across commercial and residential
building.

- With the implementation of the Companies Act 2014, and the increasing
volume of new entrants into the Dublin market, there is a continued demand for
Company Secretaries. Candidates with 1-4 years experience are in most demand,
with skilled Company Secretaries able to secure between 20-30% salary
increases when moving jobs.

- The market for qualified Solicitors is incredibly robust due to new international
firms setting up offices across Ireland to have a European gateway post Brexit.
The demand for solicitors experienced in the areas of funds, real estate,
construction and IP/technology have vastly increased. There is a disparity in
salary levels for roles based in Dublin compared to regional legal positions, with
similar roles paying significantly higher in Dublin in these practice areas.

Practice

- Within professional practice, there is significant interest in those at Manager and Senior
Manager level. Due to the shortage in experienced talent, rapid career progression is now
possible with the top accounting firms.

- When negotiating packages there has been an increased demand for benefits such as
working remotely and flexible hours.

- Using attraction messages such as affordable cost of living and shorter commutes,
employers are making concerted efforts to relocate talent from Dublin and abroad to
regional offices around Ireland.

- Salaries are increasing across the regions to meet market trends and improve retention
rates in such a competitive market.

Industry

- A number of the largest Irish headquartered corporates in industry and commerce

continue to lead by example at home and abroad, scaling globally where sustained margin
growth has continued at pace.

- SMEs with less than €100m revenues have been impacted by Brexit uncertainty with
hiring volumes, growth and ambition being muted. We expect this will change in the year
ahead when the full outcome of Brexit is known.

- Global software, fintech and technology manufacturing companies have enjoyed the
highest headcount growth. Meanwhile, traditional sectors such as FMCG and pharma have
been steady in hiring volumes.

- There has been a trend in Accountants at the senior end moving from US headquartered
companies to Irish headquartered companies where the centre of decision making is
based.

- With 50% of Ireland’s 90 biopharmaceutical sites receiving FDA approval,

there is a clear dedication to push biologics in the coming years. Some
companies are looking to employees to continue their professional
development and ensure they meet the increasingly high standards expected.

- Brexit will affect the areas of regulatory affairs and supply chain. With clinical
trials having to comply with multiple guidelines there is the likelihood that
costs will be increased. The level of uncertainty has led to many looking into
new routes to ensure access to raw materials. Added to this, with increased
risks to global supply chains, supply chain professionals are in high demand
across pharmaceutical and medical devices.

- There has been a move toward digitisation of the industry with companies
looking to utilise manufacturing execution systems to transform the
manufacturing batch records from paper to digital. This is creating better
tracking, better data analytics and achieving an overall cost reduction.

- Genetics and using genomic data is now at the frontier of medicine in Ireland.
Even with the level of debate surrounding this topic, genomics is a key area in
the Irish life science industry and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

- Professionals are now looking to take on more flexible working solutions

including short-term contracts. This is being matched by organisations
looking at adopting a leaner approach, offering a great option to inject expert
knowledge into an organisation and maintain flexibility.

“The industry is now facing skills shortage in key sectors
and companies are in a war for talent from the building site
to the boardroom.”
Tom Parlon, Director General,
Construction Industry Federation.

MARKET INTELLIGENCE
- Salaries have continued to grow in the industry, but at a lower rate this year, rising
on average by 4.5% in 2019 compared to 5% in 2018. Instead there has been a
focus on improving overall packages to incentivise and attract talent.

- As the housing crisis continues, and the residential building market continues to
grow, this has resulted in an increase in demand for talent nationwide. Smaller
contractors are scaling up their operations which is adding to the demand for talent
in the construction industry.

- To meet the demands for talent we have been heavily involved in the relocation
of professionals, mainly expats, back to Ireland from abroad. In addition, there is
a marked increase in quality graduate schemes and apprenticeship programmes
which is welcomed.

- Recent positive developments include executive level talent moving from other
more globally connected sectors into construction. Companies are also appointing a
higher representation of female executives than has been the case historically.

- After the implementation of new legislation such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001
there is continuing investment and growth in health & safety.

MARKET INTELLIGENCE

- The Private Rental Scheme (PRS) has continued to

become one of the key drivers of new home sales in
the residential sector. There are a number of agencies
now focussing on building specialist departments
to capitalise on these from an acquisition and
management perspective.

- There has been a rise in the number of agencies

offering employees flexible working arrangements
which has been backed by increasing technology
solutions such as video conferencing and remote
working systems.

- Increasingly we are seeing funds aiming to bring

their costs down by centralising their property
management functions. This has already been
embraced by a number of these funds with more due
to follow suit.

50
MARKET INTELLIGENCE

- We have witnessed a recent trend in Executives switching from U.S headquartered
multinationals to Irish headquartered companies with significant growth prospects.
Being close to the heart of the operation means that their Executives are more involved in
decision making and are adding more value to the organisation. This leads to Executives
feeling content about their overall impact in addition to better life balance.

- Within many well-known Irish headquartered family owned businesses where underinvestment
in the people agenda has historically been the norm, we are noticing that the next generation
of leaders, now recognise that proper investment in HR, talent attraction and retention is
critical to the continued success of their business.

- The uptick in financial services arising from Brexit is turning Ireland into a sought after
location for returning ex-pats as well as C-Level Executives from the UK across banking
and asset management. Notwithstanding this, financial services in general is becoming less
attractive to C-Level Executives or Partners in advisory firms to progress their career due to
the burden of increased regulation that was the response to the global financial crisis.

- The majority of multinational companies are now incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and
robotics process automation (RPA) into their business processes. C-Level Executives need to
be up to speed with the shift towards intelligent automation to ensure they are developing
their own functions or businesses in line with their competitors.
