Q1 (20) Two blocks, one of mass m1 = 1.80 kg and the other of mass m2 = 2.00 kg are on
inclined surfaces as shown in figure. The angles that the left and right incline form with the
horizontal plane are θ1= 60˚ and θ2= 30˚ respectively. The two blocks are connected by a rope
through a frictionless pulley.
a) Find the acceleration of the blocks ? [15]

Q3 (20) A block with mass m1 lying on a inclined plane is


connected to a mass m2 by a massless cord passing over a pulley,
as shown in Figure. Suppose the coefficient of kinetic friction
between m1 and the plane in Figure is μk = 0.15, and that m1 = m2
= 2.70 kg. As m2 moves down, answer the following questions by
drawing a free-body diagram for each block, and writing Newton’s
2nd law for each block.
a) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of m1 and m2, given θ = 25°. [10]
b) What smallest value of μk will keep this system from accelerating? [10]

Q4 (20) A 5.00 g bullet is fired horizontally in to a 1.20 kg wooden block resting on a horizontal
surface. The coefficient of friction between the surface and the block is 0.200. The bullet remains
embedded in the block, which is observed to slide 0.230 m along the surface before stopping.
What was the initial speed of the bullet?

Q5 (20) A 2.00-kg block is pushed against a spring with negligible mass and force constant
k = 400 N/m, compressing it 0.220 m. When the block is released, it moves along a frictionless,
horizontal surface and then up a frictionless incline with slope 37.0° as shown in Figure.
a) What is the speed of the block as it slides along horizontal surface after having left the spring?

of force constant k. The system is released from rest when the spring is unstretched. If the
hanging block of mass m2 falls the distance h before coming to rest, calculate the coefficient of
kinetic friction between the block of mass m1 and the surface.
