Cigarette Smoking Among Students at the University of Tuzla

Abstract:
Cigarette smoking among students is greatly widespread. Smoking prevalence ranges
from 28% to 67% for students, respectively, from 19% to 34% for female students. The aim of
this survey was to investigate the smoking habits of students, who are studying at three faculties
at the University of Tuzla in academic Year 2012/2013 and to investigate whether there is a
difference in smoking habits of students from different faculties and observed by gender. The
conducted analyzes have shown that in this sample 22.8% of current smokers, and 7.8% are
former smokers who now no longer smoke. Due to the adopted smoking habits, which some
students began to adopt in the age of 13, in 47.5% part of students occasionally was observed
some symptoms (cough, etc.) which are attributed to smoking. The analysis showed no
statistically significant gender difference in smoking habits. We did not find any statistically
significant difference in onset of adopting smoking habits. The analyzes have shown that in this
sample 22.8% of current smokers, and 7.8% were former smokers who now no longer smoke.
The analysis showed no statistically significant gender difference in smoking habits of all
students. There were no statistically significant differences in the daily consumption of cigarettes
between faculties.

Cigarette Smoking Behavior and the Related Factors Among the Students of Mashhad University
of Medical Sciences in Iran

Abstract:
Tobacco consumption is the second major cause of death and the fourth most common
risk factor for diseases, worldwide. Epidemiologic studies have traced the use of alcohol,
tobacco, and illicit substances among medical students and physicians. The current study aimed
to investigate the prevalence of cigarette smoking and the related factors among the students of
medical sciences in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. This cross-
sectional study was conducted on 946 health professional students in Mashhad University of
Medical Sciences (MUMS, Iran) in autumn 2008. A standard self-administered questionnaire
consisting of socio-demographic data, participant smoking status, family and peer smoking,
attitudes and beliefs about smoking, awareness of cigarette negative effects and reasons for
smoking cessation was used in the current study. Although the prevalence of regular smokers
among health professions students of MUMS was lower than general populations, but this level
is still alarming and points at the rapid growth of cigarette use, especially among female
students. Medical schools should work harder to tackle this phenomenon and address it more
efficiently in their curricula.

Smoking Habits of Student in School

Tobacco smoking has become commonplace in our culture today. A person with a
cigarette is a common thing: we can see them on the street, actors smoke in movies, there are
also smoking book characters, we have relatives or smoking friends. It has become a routine
thing for us, starting from a long time ago as part of a religious practice.

According to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO), 22 percent of the world's p
opulation over the age of 15 are smokers and about six million people die from tobacco use or to
bacco smoke exposure. Consumption of tobacco is the second major cause of death and the
world's fourth most common disease risk factor. The use of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs by
medical students and physicians has been traced through epidemiological studies. The investigate
the prevalence of cigarette smoking and the related factors among the students of medical
sciences in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran. The investigating the
prevalence of cigarette smoking among medical science students at Mashhad Medical Sciences
University, Mashhad, Iran. The study used a standard self-administered questionnaire consisting
of socio-demographic data, participant smoking status, family and peer smoking, smoking
attitudes and beliefs, cigarette negative effects awareness, and reasons for cessation of smoking.
18.3 % of the students reported having either attempted cigarette smoking or witnessed it. The
overall prevalence of cigarette smoking was 9.8% with major gender-specific differences in
prevalence rates, 17.6% among males and 4.2% among females. Although the prevalence of
regular smokers among Mashhad University of Medical Sciences students in healthcare
professions was lower than the general population, this level is still troubling and points to the
rapid increase in cigarette usage, especially among female students. (Iran Red Crescent Med J.

sample, and 7.8 percent were former smokers who are no longer smoking. The analysis did not
show any gender difference in all students ' smoking habits. There were differences between
faculties in the daily intake of cigarettes.

You do know, like most people, that smoking is bad for your health. Do you really understand
how dangerous it is to smoke? Tobacco contains nicotine, a drug that is highly addictive, making
it difficult for smokers to kick the habit. There are also many dangerous and hazardous chemicals
in tobacco products that cause disease and premature death. Smoking is ultimately a choice,
although it can be a very difficult habit to break; it is your responsibility to choose whether not
you will continue to smoke. Explanation of nicotine addiction, including why giving up smoking
is so difficult; and a summary of the benefits and disadvantages of quitting.
