The word essay comes from the French word essai which mean an attempt or an
endeavor. An essay is characterized to be brief and are not attempted to treat subjects
systematically. It outlines the author’s perspective or story and are short list of
writing that may be formal and informal. There are different types of essay which are
based on what the author or writer wants to convey. They are no rigid format of an
essay, but usually follow a basic structure containing introduction, body, and
conclusion about the topic. The following are types of essays:
Narrative Essays is a type of essay which the author tells a story about real- life
experiences. This usually focus on events and feelings experienced by the writer and
are often discuss about lesson learned in life based from certain situations. It is a type
of writing which the characters may be the author himself, or not which narrates the
story.
Descriptive essay is self-explanatory (Heydrick, 1921). This type of essay deals with
larger scale of nature that differs from its description. This essay enables the readers to
see through the eyes of the author, the author tells what he thinks and what he sees.
Examples of descriptive essays are Ruskin’s description of the sky which appeal to let
the sky strengthen our faith; and Thoreau’s Brute Neighbors describing animals that
started with questions about nature, thus both essays describe their subjects.
Informative Essay (reporting) is a type of essay which explains a certain issue or
topic. This essay requires the writer to find out as much as they can about the topic.
The information is set out in a logical, clear order, and describe the topic in a factual
and informative style. Diagrams, charts, graphs or timelines can be used to present
information clearly.
Evaluative Essay is also known as analytic essay which according to Jones and
Johnson (nd) it is probably the most common variety of essay found in further and
higher education, and it is based from ideas that have been taught and that is
considered as common knowledge. This requires familiarity with the subject to be
able to draw analyses and judgement on the certain topic.
Persuasive Essay is also known as a persuasive essay. In this type of essay, the
arguments and viewpoints of both sides of the topic should be considered, deciding
which side to take, and argue logically and persuasively encourage the reader to
support your view. The topic focuses on the side from which the writer believes is
correct or right and finds fault on the opposite or contradicting side.
