Curriculum News
 LANGUAGE ARTS: This week we will begin our unit fifth unit in our language arts adoption, Advancements in
Technology. We will cross the curriculum with this unit as students explore historic inventions, discoveries, and many
of the scientific creators behind these technologies. Skills will include identifying key details and main ideas, text
connections, using context clues to define specific words, analyzing author’s purpose, using text and graphic features
to help with comprehension and comparing two texts on the same topic. Word Work is due this Thursday. Spelling
words for this week have a vowel-consonant-e-syllable pattern. They are: arrive, celebrated, huge, telephone, broke,
wine, June and whole. Our parent-led Reader’s Workshop start this week. Thanks in advance to Mrs. Roberts and Mrs.
Steiner for their time and expertise. Writer’s Workshop will include lessons on figurative language as well as finishing
the Camarillo community reports.
 MATH: We will continue working on Module 3 lessons 13, 14, 15 & 16. Please encourage your child to spend 5-10
min/day working on multiplication facts. Students should be getting at least 60% correct on five minute timed tests.
 SCIENCE: We are continuing with our unit on the solar system as we learn about the phases of the moon and
constellations.
 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Last week we sent home a sheet and accompanying letter about our class participation
in The Great Kindness Challenge. Bravo to those students who made a conscious effort to be kind and record it on the
checklist. This week we will expand and extend the unit as we explore examples of kindness in literacy, real life and
the classroom, and enjoy a special art project based on kindness.
