Dear Mam:

Science is one of the subjects in the elementary curriculum that scores low
achievement in our school. As one goes up the ladder of education, one has to
learn more about this field in order to improve our level of achievement. These
mean that each individual must be equip with knowledge, gains understanding of
different skills to be use
Different processes in science such as describing, comparing, analyzing, and
inferring to name a few. Since Science is taught in English, which makes our
students find difficulty in grasping ideas, i thought i have make certain moves to
make these burden a little lighter for our students.

It is in this regard, that i would like to seek for your approval and
recommendation to conduct an action research on " Improving Pupil's Poor
Mastery In Science Grade IV Through Intensive Remedial Instruction Using
Strategic Intervention Materials this Second Semester From August to March
2015.

Thank you and God Bless.

Respectfully Yours,

II. Background Of The Study

Science is one the subjects in the elementary level are often seen at the
bottom of the list of subjects that attained the low achievement level in the
National Achievement Test. This caught my attention make me wonder what
measures can i do to make this reality change for the better. Although Science for
me is a very interesting subject, why is it that pupils got low mastery level. What
can be the hindrance why our pupils got low mastery level? I know one thing is
because of the language that is used the subject. English is the medium of
instruction in teaching from Grade 3 to Grade 6. Another thing is the problem of
visualizing concepts which are in English, to their level of understanding. How
can these pupils learn concepts in developing their skills in observing,
classifying, comparing, analyzing, at the same time.

For the past few weeks, an observation of mine gave me a slight hint on
what to do to help my students to achieve a high mastery in Science topics that
was given to them. This is the use of ICT such as the SCIENCE
INTERVENTION MATERIALS (SIM) and other audio visual materials.
III – Statement of the Problem:

As the researcher of this research, I have found out that many of my pupils
in Grade IV are able to read fluently, but still have the difficulty in answering
“how” and “why” questions. These groups of pupils which I considered slow in
the real sense of the word. They need a different set of learning materials which is
designed specifically according to the areas which needs remediation. This
material will be based from the results of the National Achievement Test, the least
mastered test in Science will be the focused. Incorporating the understanding the
different learning styles of my pupils, I’m looking forward to working on this area
of concern, and my findings with my co-teachers.

IV- Significance Of the Study:

The significance of will be deemed important for the proper recognition of
STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIALS (SIM) on the academic
performance of the Grade IV pupils, Likewise the findings of this research may
prove useful to the :

Pupil : Having a clearer view and firsthand experience of the teacher’s

performance, this will further enhance pupils’s knowledge of the importance of
mastering the basic skills of their competencies so they will make an effort to do
best. This may lead
To better enthusiasm and develop good study habit.

Teacher : This study may heighten their awareness and teacher’s creativity in
developing highly interesting strategic intervention materials that they can use
and share with one another. This may further be a motivating factor to adapt
measures and new strategies for the improvement of the pupils achievement level.

Parents : The result of these study will serve as bird’s eye view of the parentto
know the needs of their children with regards to thier academic achievement,

School Administrator and Supervisors. Results of this investigation may

encourage administrators and supervisors help their teachers upgrade their
teaching performance in improving mastery of the basic competencies in Science
through closer supervision and faculty development and training programs.

Department of Education, NCR specifically Division of Quezon City

Schools, with the use of the results of the study and any educational up-liftment
will benefit the municipality as it may improve the quality of working force of the
municipality of the quality of life of their respective constituents.

Curriculum Planners. The findings of this study may assist the planners in the
proper selection of methods, techniques and strategies that need to be reinforced.

Community. The results of this study may benefit the community in as much
they know that the teachers of their children are equipped with the necessary tools
and competence in teaching them.

Researcher Herself. This may serve as an inspiration in teaching his pupils

above and beyond her capacity.
Future Researcher. The information and insights that will be gained from this
study may serve as a guide for other researcher in framing their conceptual
framework and design and at the same time encourage then to conduct lateral
studies within their area of preferences.

V- Scope of the Study

The general focus of the present study was on the Improving the Mastery
Level of the Grade IV pupils in Science IV of Tomas Morato Elementary School
using STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIALS, coupled with understanding
the different learning styles of the pupils based from the results of the National
Achievement Test. The aspects in improving the mastery level that the present
study will look into different process approaches, such as predicting, comparing,
classifying, analyzing, observing and describing. are shown on this research to
improve their mastery level.

VI- Research Design:

A. Methodology:

This study employs the pre-Experimental one shot study. According to De

Jesus the pre experimental one group Pretest Posttest Study is the inclusion of
pretest to determine baseline scores, we could compare mastery prior to the
intensive instructional intervention and after the remedial instruction. We can now
at least state whether a change in the outcome or dependent variable has taken
place.
Another tool is the use of the SIM posttest and pretest. This can
determine student growth in the mastery of the skills. This provide will
information of changes on how well her pupils gain mastery level.

B. Sampling Design
Purposive sampling was employed in selecting pupils-respondent of the
study. The pupils that belong to the list who got the lowest mastery in Grade IV-
Masunurin School Year 2014-2015.

C. Description of Instrument Data and Gathering Form

The SIM had a total of 15 questions divided into 3 parts.
