Unit 1. Installing BRMS

Unit objectives

 List the software that is required to install BRMS

 List the correct order in which this software should be installed • Explain some
considerations when installing BRMS
 Explain the capabilities of the INZBRMcommand
 Explain the process to initialize BRMS

BRMS software

 Install OS options and BRMS:

– 5770-SS1 Option 18: Media and Storage Extensions • Prerequisite
– 5770-SS1 Option 44: Encrypted Backup Enablement – 5770-BR1 *BASE
– 5770-BR1 Option 1: Network feature
– 5770-BR1 Option 2: Advanced Functions feature

BRMS installation (1 of 2)

1. GO LICPGM
2. Option 11: Install Licensed Programs

Notes:

The software products need to be installed in the order shown. If MSE (Media Storage Entension) is
not installed before BRMS, it does work correctly.

No special actions are needed when installing BRMS on a system for the first time, or when installing
a new version of BRMS on the same system which has a previous version currently installed. In
either case, follow the steps below to install BRMS on your Power system with IBM i or use the
normal IBM i processes for installing the new software from the distribution media.

1. Quiesce all BRMS operations if BRMS is already installed.

2. Enter GO LICPGM from a command line.

3. At the Work with Licensed Programs display, select option 11 - Install licensed programs. 4.
Select Product 5770-BR1, option *BASE to install the standard Backup, Recovery, and Media

Services then press Enter.

5. Press Enter at the next display to confirm your selection.

6. At the Install Options display, type in the name of your installation device as requested. Then
press Enter to start the installation.
7. Press F14 to accept the Software Agreements.

After you have successfully installed the *BASE BRMS product, you can install the additional
features.

To do so, repeat steps 1-7 for each feature. At step 3, take option 1 for the Network feature or
option 2 for the Advanced functions (HSM) feature.

BRMS installation (2 of 2)

• When BRMS is installed, it automatically:

– Creates the QBRM program library

– Copies BRMS commands into QSYS

– Creates the QUSRBRM setup library

– Runs INZBRM (*DATA), which:

• Creates a list of tape drives known to the system

• Creates all media classes supported based on installed tape drives • Creates default BRMS objects

– Registers the MSE tape interface program as exit points

(details later in this unit, using the INZBRM command)

• Add the license key information for BRMS:

– Connect to www.ibm.com/software/lms

• You need your customer number and software order number

Notes:

After an installation or an update, it might be necessary run the *RUNPRDINZ command.

*DATA

• You are initializing BRMS.

• Default control groups, policies, and tables are built based on the characteristics of the system
that is being initialized.

• Additionally, new devices are added and ASPs are configured. Default ASP descriptions for ASPs
defined to the system, but not already defined to BRMS are added.

*RUNPRDINZ

• Use this option to complete initialization of the BRMS LPP (licensed program product) after
installation.

• The BRMS LPP cannot be used until initialization is complete.

• Product initialization is only required once following a product update.

• Use this option if you receive the message BRM40A2 (BRMS product initialization is required)
when attempting to perform a BRMS operation after a product update.

Install BRMS-related PTFs

• Rerun your last CUMME (cumulative media) DVD to pick up BRMS and MSE PTFs (or apply most
recent full CUMME).

• Install the Backup and Recovery group PTF as follows:

– V7R2: SF99715

– V7R1: SF99362

– V6R1: SF99187

– V5R4: SF99186

The INZBRM command

The Initialize BRMS (INZBRM) command performs several types of initialization. These include:

– Estimate the time to update BRMS to a future version and release

– Start BRMS product initialization after installation or update

– Estimate the time remaining to complete BRMS product initialization

– Initialize all major files as well as establishing default policies and control groups – Starts the
subsystem for networking in a multi-system environment

– Reset BRMS and reinitialize all major files as well as establishing default policies and control
groups

– Create auxiliary storage pool (ASP) descriptions

– Re-register all BRMS functional authority elements with the OS's registration facility; used during
a full system recovery prior to restoring user profiles

– Change the system name for BRMS media information to a new system name when restoring this
information to a different system or logical partition

– Merge the BRMS database files contained on one library with the BRMS database files in another
library

Using INZBRM (1 of 2)

•INZBRM (*CHGSYSNAM):

– Rename owner of BRMS media information

• Used in system recovery

• Documented in the recovery report

•INZBRM (*DATA):

– Adds any tape drives that are attached but not known to BRMS

– Adds any default BRMS objects that are missing

– Adds control groups for new Domino servers

•INZBRM (*DEVICE):

– Same as INZBRM (*DATA) and

– Deletes any tape drives that no longer exist on the system

•INZBRM (*ESTPRDINZ):

– Used to determine time required to initialize BRMS

•INZBRM (*ESTPRDUPD):
– Used to determine time required to initialize BRMS after upgrading to a new software release

•INZBRM (*FLASHCOPY):

– Used to set the FlashCopy status of BRMS

Notes:

*CHGSYSNAM

Allows you to change the system name that is stored in the BRMS media information. The system
name is used to distinguish the media information of this system from the media information of
other systems in a BRMS Network. The system name is applied to the media information even if you
do not use the BRMS Networking feature. BRMS uses the system's local network ID

(LCLNETID) and default local location name (LCLLOCNAME) for the system name. You can use the
DSPNETA command to view these system network attributes.

*DATA

You are initializing BRMS. Default control groups, policies, and tables are built based on the
characteristics of the system that is being initialized. Additionally, new devices are added and ASPs
are configured. Default ASP descriptions for ASPs defined to the system, but not already defined to
BRMS are added.

When ASPs are configured, the following default information is added:

• ASP name value is *NONE, except for ASP 1, which is given the ASP name of *SYSTEM.

• Low and high threshold values are set to *NONE.

• Text is “Entry that is created by BRM configuration”.

If the parameter contains the special value *DATA, you must process the INZBRM command on the
system on which you want to initialize for BRMS.

This option does not affected the saved history.

No parameters are used with this option.

*DEVICE

You are clearing device and media library information and reinitializing the files with the devices
currently described on the system. In addition to clearing and reinitializing the device file, *DEVICE
also performs the same functions as *DATA. Using the *DEVICE special value causes CSI objects and
APPC device information to be removed from the BRMS inventory if no APPC device entries by the
same name are found. Using the *DEVICE special value does not cause NET device information to be
removed.

*ESTPRDINZ

Use this option to determine the approximate time that is required to complete initialization of the
BRMS licensed program after installation or update. An estimate of the initialization time is returned
in message BRM402B. For more precise estimates, always run this option in the same system
environment as the initialization job. If this option is run concurrently with product initialization, the
'approximate time remaining' is returned.

Product initialization is only required once following a product update. Use option *RUNPRDINZ of
this command to run product initialization after the update.

*ESTPRDUPD

Use this option to determine the approximate time that is required to complete a BRMS licensed
program update to a future version and release. The time estimate is returned in message

BRM402C.

Note: The actual time might vary from the estimated time if the update occurs on a different system
or uses a different job environment. You must specify a value for Target release (TGTRLS) when using
this option.

*FLASHCOPY

Use this option to set the FlashCopy status for BRMS. You must specify State (STATE) parameter
when using this option.

Note: The BRMS Network feature (Option 1) is required to use this parameter.

Using INZBRM (2 of 2)

•INZBRM (*MERGE):

– Used to merge BRMS database files from one library with BRMS database files in another library

• Used when consolidating multiple systems onto a single system

•INZBRM (*NETSYS):

– Used to add a system to a BRMS network

•INZBRM (*RUNPRDINZ):

– Initialize BRMS after installation/upgrade

– BRMS cannot be used until completion

•INZBRM (*SECUREDDM):

– Used to set the user profile and password to use for remote server secure DDM connections to all
the systems in a BRMS network

•INZBRM (*SETAUT):

– Used to re-register BRMS functional authority

• Used during a full system recovery

• Documented in the recovery report

•INZBRM (*RESET)- Beware:

– All information is cleared

– Only BRMS defaults available when finished

Before initializing BRMS

Notes:

The BRMS menus are displayed as shown above if you have not yet initialized on your system.
