Scope:
Procedure for a safe and efficient explosives handling while the approach and
progress of electrical storms.

Objective :
To prevent personal injury and property damage due to the accidental initiation of
bulk explosives from lightning strikes.

Accountability:
D&Blast Superintendent Pre Requisites:

Responsibility: SWP Blast –01 (Loading of Explisive)


Shift Production Superintendent SWP Blast –02 (Sleeping Loaded)
Blasting Supervisor SWP Blast –03 (Firing of Blast)
Blaster on Duty

Personal Protective Equipment: Specific Requirements:

NOTE :Mandatory Activity


1. There are critical control points (CCP) defined within this procedure. Where a step is identified by
CCP it is the accountability of the designated person to ensure this step is fulfilled regardless of who
is performing the activity.

2. Department Superintendent is responsible for reviewing adherence to this S.W.P. on a regular basis.
1st Review – 6 months thereafter annually

1 STOP ALL BLASTING ACTIVITIES


CCP On the basis of lightning strikes occurring in the region of the blasting Blast
location, Blasting Supervisor must make the decision to suspend Supv /
blasting activities. This decision may be made by Blaster on Duty at Blaster on
any location (if the Blasting Supervisor is not present at the blasting Duty
location)

2 TIES-IN DISCONNECTED
CCP If it is possible, Blasting Supervisor notifies Blaster on Duty to at least Blast Supv
the Control Row of the Shot is to be quickly disconnected.

3 PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT EVACUATED


CCP All personnel must be secure at least 500 m from loaded explosives Blast
areas which could possibly initiated and or self unplanned blasted. Supv / Shift
All equipment must be secure at least 300 m from loaded explosives Prod Supt
areas which could possibly initiated and or self unplanned blasted.
Bulk Explosive Trucks are to be parked up at least 300m adjacent to
the shot and at the lowest possible level.

4 STORM WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES IN PROGRESS

5 COMPLETION OF STORM
CPP After the storm has passed, Blasting Supervisor must doing final check Blast Supv
and then declare the areas safe, after that, giving instruction to return
to work normally.
