CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Social media has become part of our daily life. Over a million of people are usually

use social media. According to Maya Dollarhlide, social media is computer-based

technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the

building of virtual networks and communities. By design, social media is internet-based

and gives users quick electronic communication of content. Content includes personal

information, documents, videos, and photos.[1] Technology began to change very

rapidly in the 20th Century. After the first super computers were created in the 1940s,

scientists and engineers began to develop ways to create networks between those

computers, and this would later lead to the birth of the Internet. The earliest forms of

the Internet, such as CompuServe, were developed in the 1960s. Primitive forms of

email were also developed during this time. By the 70s, networking technology had

improved, and 1979’s UseNet allowed users to communicate through a virtual

newsletter. By the 1980s, home computers were becoming more common and social

media was becoming more sophisticated. Internet relay chats, or IRCs, were first used

in 1988 and continued to be popular well into the 1990’s. The first recognizable social

media site, Six Degrees, was created in 1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and

make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular,

creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today.

In this study, the researcher will aim to know how social media affects the behavior

Theoretical Framework

McLoughlin & Lee (2010) stated that using social media networks in the

educational process could help educators to apply the inquiry-based approach and

encourage the collaboration between the instructor and the students, thereby

encourage engagement. Also important is the potential of these technologies for

encouraging independent self-directed learning as well as encouraging students’ as

active producers of knowledge, which once again is commonly regarded as a positive

affordance for media.

From the theory of McLoughlin & Lee, the effects of using social media can help

in terms of education.it can help in the way the instructor and the students can

approach in each other to the helps of social media. Also, social media can help those

students in terms of directed learning, it can encourage independent self. And social

media enhances the knowledge of the students in terms of education and it can help

to boost their independent learning. Because of using Social Media, Instructors and

Students are being connected, and they can be updated in news, information, and all

of social media happenings. The instructors who are using social media to understand

Students, and why they use social media regularly than books, in this case the

students should be focus on using social media to prepare their works, projects and
