Passive Voice for all Tenses - Rules


There are tw o basic rules f or converting sentences f rom Active Voice into Passive Voice, w hich are
common f or all tenses.

1. The places of subject and object w ill be interchanged in the sentence.


2. Only 3rd f orm of the verb or Past Participle (e.g. w ritten) w ill be used as a main verb in Passive
Voice.

The rules f or using ‘Auxiliary Verb’ in a sentence are dif f erent f or each tense, as f ollow s:

Auxiliary verbs used in Passive Voice: Is /are /am
Active Voice s Pas s ive Voice s
He w rites a letter. A letter is w ritten by him.
He does not w rite a letter. A letter is not w ritten by him.
Does he w rite a letter? Is a letter w ritten by him?
They sell books. Books are sold by them.
She helps me. I am helped by her.

Auxiliary verbs used in Passive Voice: Is be ing / Are be ing / Am be ing
Active Voice s Pas s ive Voice s
She is singing a song. A song is being sung by her.
She is not singing a song. A song is not being sung by her.
Is she singing a song? Is a song being sung by her?
They are eating apples. Apples are being eaten by them.
You are disturbing me. I am being disturbed by you.

She has w ritten f ive poems. Five poems have be e n w ritten by her.
I have made some cakes. Some cakes have be e n made by me.

She w ill not w rite a poem. A poem w ill not be w ritten by her.
Will she w rite a poem? Will a poem be w ritten by her?
You w ill receive the letter. The letter w ill be received by you.
They w ill arrange the money. The money w ill be arranged by them.

He w ill have received the letter. The letter w ill have be e n received by him.
He w ill not have received the letter. The letter w ill not have be e n received by him.

Note : The sentences of f ollow ing tenses can’t be changed to Passive Voices.
