Preliminary Activity Tasks
This section may contain tasks that you must complete before performing this procedure.

Read, understand, and perform these tasks

1. [ ] Table 1 lists tasks, cautions, warnings, notes, and/or knowledgebase (KB) solutions that you
need to be aware of before performing this activity. Read, understand, and when necessary perform
any tasks contained in this table and any tasks contained in any associated knowledgebase solution.

Table 1 List of cautions, warnings, notes, and/or KB solutions related to this activity

489302: If you are using Data At Rest Encryption (D@RE) on your VNX2 array, perform a Keystore
Backup prior to the NDU and store the backup image on a host system: Unisphere > System >
System Management > Backup Keystore file

488877: In Rel 33 P155 during a controlled reboot, an issue maybe encountered where a lun(or luns)
may not accept I/O for 50+ seconds during the trespass process. There is a strong probability that
this issue will be impactful when upgrading from Rel 33 P155 to any later release of code. Dell EMC
strongly recommend to installs KB488877-01.01.5.001-armada64_free.ndu (available on
support.emc.com) prior to attempting an install of any VNX OE version when upgrading from Rel 33
P155.

301857: Do not perform a VNX OE NDU on any VNX Storage Processors connected to a VPLEX
running any VPLEX GeoSynchrony version. Do not perform a proactive Storage Processor reboot on
any VNX Storage Processors connected to a VPLEX running any VPLEX GeoSynchrony version.
Refer to ETA 182792, ETA 193541, and ETA 197315

302035: Block deduplication feature in VNX2 arrays running Block 05.33.000.5.051 with VMware ESX
servers or Microsoft Windows 2012 Server may lose access to a set of deduplication enabled LUNs.

Replacing a Control Station (CS) with VNX 8.1 Unified/File
system
 A CS replacement should only be conducted for CS hardware failures, local Linux corruption
that FSCK cannot repair, or if the CS will not boot.
 A CS0 replacement involves reinstalling the Linux O/S and restoring various configuration and
NAS database files, and requires that CS1 be powered off before starting the recovery process.
 A CS1 replacement involves reinstalling the Linux O/S, and requires that CS0 be running as
the Primary Control Station before doing the CS1 reinstall.
 Important Notice: For CS0 recovery on Gateway or Unified VNX2 systems (normally using
an Express Install DVD image), you may encounter an error during Task 3 of the recovery
process: “ENAS_install_rpm has failed.” If you encounter this issue, you can download and burn
the Classic VNX OE DVD iso image (e.g., “8.1.8.121_dvdimage.iso”), and perform a
“boot:serialrecover”. Or, if you cannot do this, refer to KB article 457288 for steps to work around
the Express Install DVD issue.

WARNING: The Replacement procedure is not designed, and cannot fix, a NAS backend LUN/partition
corruption issue and should not be used for that purpose! The CS0 replacement is different than the CS1
replacement procedure—review carefully!

Task 1: Collect Control Station information

3. [ ] To facilitate the Control Station replacement, obtain the following information, if applicable, from
the site administrator, tailoring the information for either CS0 or CS1 replacement:

Table 1 Control Station/Blade/Array Info

Task 2: Backup CS0’s System Configuration (Skip this task if replacing CS1)
Note: If CS0 hardware has failed, NAS Services may be running on CS1. You can still perform
the following steps in this task to upload and run the upgrd-ckv script to backup files, but you must
remember to power off CS1 before performing the actual CS0 recovery operation! You cannot
perform a CS0 recovery operation if CS1 is running.

IMPORTANT: It is extremely important that the replacement procedure use the Express Install DVD
media File OE version that matches the version running on the system! Refer to the Optional Task at the
end of the procedure if you cannot determine which File OE NAS version is running on the system.

2. [ ] Login to CS0 as nasadmin user, then su to the root user:

su root
3. [ ] Check whether NAS services are running, and verify which Control Station is running as the
Primary:
Example shows CS0 running normally as the Primary with NAS Services running:
/nas/sbin/getreason
10 - slot_0 primary control station
11 - slot_1 secondary control station

Example shows CS1 running as the Primary with NAS Services running:
/nasmcd/getreason
- slot_0 reset
10 - slot_1 primary control station

Note: If slot 0 has a reason code of 10, then NAS services are running.

1. [ ] Upload and run the latest upgrd-ckv script on the Control Station.

a. Locate the latest upgrd-ckv script in the following SolVe Generator location on your Laptop and
upload to the /home/nasadmin directory on the Control Station:
C:\ProgramData\EMC\SolVeDesktop\VNX.SOLVE\Scripts\upgrd-ckv11-24.tar.gz
a. Unzip/untar the script and execute the script in CS Backup mode:
# tar zxvf upgrd-ckvxx-xx.tar.gz
# /home/nasadmin/upgrd-ckv<xx>.bin -vb 1

Note: Note: The script creates tar.gz backup files in the /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0 directory

/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/cron.tar.gz
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/emcnas.tar.gz
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/files.tar.gz
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/nasmcd.tar.gz
2. [ ] Create a manual backup of the /home directory to the /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0 directory

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21

# tar zcvf /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/home_backup.tar.gz /home
3. [ ] Create a manual backup of the /etc directory to the /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0 directory
# tar zcvf /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/etc.tar.gz /etc
1. [ ] Verify Control Station File OE version and model name:
/nasmcd/bin/nas_version
8.1.2.51
/nas/sbin/model
VNX5600
2. [ ] Verify whether the Data Movers are running the same version or a patch version.
server_version ALL
server_2 : Product: EMC File Server Version: T8.1.2.501
server_3 : Product: EMC File Server Version: T8.1.2.501
3. [ ] If any Data Movers are running a specific NAS patch version, locate the patch in the /nas/dos/bin
directory, and copy to the /nas/var/backup directory:
# cp –ip /nas/dos/bin/nas501.exe /nas/var/backup

4. [ ] Copy all /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0 files, except “nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz”, to

/nas/var/backup:
# cp –ip /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/* /nas/var/backup/

Note: Note: Answer “n” when asked to overwrite “nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz”

5. [ ] For added safety, copy the following files off to your service laptop:
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/home_backup.tar
/nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/nas501.exe

Task 3: Power off the appropriate Control Station

CAUTION: If you are replacing CS1, you must verify that CS0 is running as the Primary CS before doing
the replace.

CAUTION: If you are replacing CS0, power down CS1 now, but DO NOT unplug its AC power cord.

12. [ ] If you are replacing the Secondary Control Station (CS1), power it down now, and unplug its AC
power cord from the PDP panel:
/nasmcd/sbin/t2reset pwroff –s 1
# /nasmcd/sbin/getreason
10 - slot_0 primary control station
- slot_1 powered off
13. [ ] If you are replacing CS0, do the following:
a. If you have a Secondary CS1, power it off now using the command listed in Step 11 above, but
DO NOT unplug its AC power cord.

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21

b. Power off CS0 using the following command, or manually, and unplug its AC power cord from
the PDP panel.

Task 4: Remove the faulted Control Station

14. [ ] Use masking tape, etc., make sure that each Ethernet cable is appropriately labeled so that it
can be placed back into the correct port later.
15. [ ] Disconnect all of the Ethernet, serial, and power cables from the rear of the faulted Control
Station.
16. [ ] Remove the faulted Control Station from the front of the cabinet:
a. At the front of the cabinet, remove the stabilizing screws from behind the latch brackets on
inner rail on each side of the Control Station, and pull the unit forward out of the cabinet until it
locks into place. Save the screws because they will reused for the replacement CS.

Figure 2

Task 9: Restoring configuration files on CS0 (Skip this task for CS1 replacement)
38. [ ] If system configuration backup files were not collected before the CS0 recover, or if you are sure
that no additional files or configurations require restoration, you may skip this Task. If you do intend
to restore configuration files, you must be extremely diligent in verifying that what you are restoring is
not corrupted or out-of-date. Unless wholesale restoration of files is required, it is suggested that you
unzip files into a temporary directory, and replace individual files rather than entire directories.
39. [ ] Log in to CS0 as nasadmin, su to root user:
su root
40. [ ] Verify that /nas, /nbsnas, /nas/dos, and /nas/var partitions are mounted:
df
41. [ ] Verify that backup files from Task 2 are in the /nas/var/backup directory. If necessary, restore
from your laptop backup.
ls -l /nas/var/backup/*|egrep "gz|exe"
Sample output:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 125 Mar 13 11:15 /nas/var/backup/cron.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2333587 Mar 13 10:28 /nas/var/backup/emcnas.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28083290 Mar 13 10:28 /nas/var/backup/files.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8084165 Mar 13 10:53
/nas/var/backup/home_backup.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8564530 Mar 13 16:01
/nas/var/backup/nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 25080752 Mar 13 10:28 /nas/var/backup/nasmcd.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 28233152 Mar 13 11:30 /nas/var/backup/nas501.exe

42. [ ] Create a temporary directory for the NASDB backup file (nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz):
mkdir -p /tmp/recover_cs0
43. [ ] Change to this temporary directory:
cd /tmp/recover_cs0
44. [ ] Copy the backup file to /tmp/recover_cs0:
cp -ip /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz .
45. [ ] Extract the /etc directory files to the /tmp/recover_cs0 directory:
tar zxvf nasdb_backup.1.tar.gz etc /tmp/recover_cs0
46. [ ] Examine the /tmp/recover_cs0/etc files and copy only files to /etc that need restoration.
cd /tmp/recover_cs0/etc
Alternatively, extract all etc directory files from the etc.tar.gz backup,
to the /etc directory in one replacement operation:
# cd /
# tar zxvf /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/etc.tar.gz etc

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21

47. [ ] Copy the home_backup.tar.gz files to /tmp/recover_cs0, extract, and manually copy only files
requiring restoration:
cp -ip /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/home_backup.tar.gz .
tar zxvf home_backup.tar.gz home /tmp/recover_cs0
cd /tmp/recover_cs0/home

Alternatively, extract all home directory files from the

home_backup.tar.gz backup, to the /home directory in one replacement
operation:
# cd /
# tar zxvf /nbsnas/var/dump/recover_cs0/home_backup.tar.gz home

48. [ ] If the Blades were running a NAS patch (for example, nas501.exe), you can copy from the
/nas/var/backup directory.
49. [ ] Remove the tar files and temporary directories from the system.
cd /
rm -rf /tmp/recover_cs0
50. [ ] Reboot CS0 to ensure that the Control Station works with the new configuration (verify that CS1
is powered down first, as required):
reboot

Task 10: Restore miscellaneous services

Some services may need to be reconfigured after a CS replacement, such as:
 NTP Service
 DNS settings
 Timezone

51. [ ] Verify CS values, then set timezone, ntp service, date, dns settings, etc., for CS0 if required:

nas_cs –info
nas_cs -info -timezones (Provides list of all possible timezones)
nas_cs -set -timezone <customer’s_timezone>
Note: Setting timezone on the Control Station requires reboot
ls -la /etc/localtime (shows the local timezone,if set)
52. [ ] If the Control Station was replaced on a system with IP Replication configured between systems,
you may need to re-establish the Control Station trust relationships (use nas_cel –list to verify).
53. [ ] If IPaliasing was in use on CS0, you may need to reset IPalias:
nas_config -IPalias -list
nas_config –IPalias –create 0

Task 11: Power Up CS1 (if you have completed a CS0 recover)
54. [ ] Power-on CS1 (if required) and wait 5 minutes for it to boot.
/nasmcd/sbin/t2reset pwron -s 1
55. [ ] Optional: Test failover functionality of CS0 to CS1:

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21

/nasmcd/sbin/cs_standby –failover
Note: Wait up to 15 minutes for CS1 to fully restart with NAS Services
56. [ ] Restore back to CS0 and wait approximately 15 minutes for NAS Services to restart:
/nasmcd/sbin/cs_standby –failover
1. [ ] Verify that ConnectHome and Email User notifications (if applicable) are enabled and active:
# /nas/sbin/nas_connecthome -info
# /nas/sbin/nas_connecthome -service start –clear
# /nas/bin/nas_emailuser -info
# /nas/bin/nas_emailuser -modify -enabled yes
2. [ ] If the customer was using the ESRS Device Client on the Unified/File Control Station, it should
be re-provisioned now using the Unisphere GUI. Launch Unisphere > System > Manage ESRS
for File.
3. [ ] Perform a system Health Check:
nas_checkup
4. [ ] Locate the parts Return label, complete the information, and prepare the box for return to EMC.

Task 12: (Optional Task) Determine NAS Version when CS is not Working
If you do not know which NAS version is running on the system, there are a couple of options. If there is
an alternate CS1, you can run /nasmcd/bin/nas_version to get the File OE version. Otherwise, perform
the following steps to serially connect to the Standby Data Mover and then output the blade OE version.
If a patch version is reported, you can assume the released package version.
Example: 8.1.2.501 is reported on the Blade. The released package for the CS is 8.1.2-51.

5. [ ] Connect a serial cable (mini-DB9) from the service laptop (COM1 or COM2) to the serial
maintenance port on the management module that is associated with the Standby Blade.

Note: When viewed from the rear, the serial maintenance port on the right, (A) side, connects to the
even-numbered Blade in the Blade enclosure (for example, Blade 2). The serial port on the left, (B)
side, connects to the odd-numbered Blade (for example, Blade 3).

6. [ ] Open a Serial Putty session with the following settings:

Bits per second: 9600
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None
Emulation: Auto Detect
Telnet terminal ID: ANSI
7. [ ] Click the Call icon to connect to the Blade console. The CONSOLE prompt appears:
CONSOLE>
8. [ ] Redirect the output to the console:
logsys add output console
9. [ ] Run the version command on the Blade:
version

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21

10. [ ] Reset the console output to log:
logsys delete output console

EMC Confidential Information version: 7.0.6.21
