A Detailed Lesson Plan in English 9

(Local Demonstration Teaching)

I. Objectives
At the end of the 45-minute lesson, the students are expected to:
a. identify the use of modal of obligation.
b. relate the use of modal of obligation to real life conversations.
c. demonstrate understanding of modal of obligation through
differentiated activities.

Good afternoon, class. Before we


start please pick the pieces of paper under
your chair and you may now take your
seats. Thank you. Good afternoon, sir.
(The students will pick the pieces of paper
under their chair and will take their seats.)

Lesson Proper

Let us group you into four. Please
count 1 to 4.
The students will count 1 – 4 until the last

one of them has his/her group number.

Go to your respective groups please form


a small circle.

(The teacher will post the picture of a


young man.)

Class, this is Jose. He belongs to the


poorest family in town. And he decided to
already quit studying because of poverty.
Supposed Jose is your classmate, what
advice(s) will you give him?

Inside your envelope is a cartolina. This is


where you’ll write your pieces of advice to
Jose. Did you understand?

You have three minutes to do the activity.

Group 1, please post your cartolina on the


board, same goes with groups 2, 3, and 4.
(The students will post their work on the
board.)

Modals.
Yes, they are modals. Based on the
examples, how do you define modals?

Sir, modals are verbs that are combined


with main verbs to express special
meanings.
Great! Now, let’s see if your definition of
modals is the same as mine.

Kindly read the definition of Modals.

combined with main verbs to form special
meaning.

Thank you. Today, we shall focus only on


the Modals of Obligation.

Can you identify the modals of obligation?

Sir, Must and Should.
Why are they called Modals of Obligation?
Obligations because in a way the person
using the modals has an obligation to the
one he or she is talking to. That this
person he or she is talking to must follow
or is obliged to follow.

Should

You should stop smoking cigarettes as


early as possible before damaging your
lungs.

He should comply with the requirements


to pass his course.

Must

I must tell the truth.

Maria must give her friend the benefit of


the doubt.

Given the examples, when is should used?


When is must used?

Sir, should is used when something is


being recommended and must is used
when something needs to be done.

D. Application

At this time, let us check whether you fully


understand our lesson.

“Corruption in government is rampant.


Many presidents have already addressed
this issue but still, it is not eradicated.
Corruption is hereby defined as dishonest
conduct by those who are in power.”

Same groupings. Group 1, you will make a

slogan eradicating corruption using the
modals SHOULD AND MUST. Group 2,
you will compose a song using SHOULD
and MUST. Your song must be about
stopping corruption. Group 3, you will act a
scene about corruption. Group 4, you will
act as if you’re in a pageant. The
candidates will answer the questions about
corruption using the modals SHOULD and
MUST.

rubrics. (Annex 1)

being recommended and must is used
when something needs to be done.
