Latent Heat
Heat is required to change the temperature of a body.

Heat is also required to change the phase.

Latent Heat

During the change of phase, temperature is constant

but heat is required

to break the interaction between molecules

Latent Heat

Heat is required to change the state

Example MCQ type Question [ +4 , -1]

Boiling water is changing into steam.

At this stage the specific heat of water is-

A. < 1
B. ∞
C. 1
D. 0
Latent Heat
Heat required to change the state
of a unit mass of substance.

Q = mL

Units: J/kg
Heat Required in Change of State
Latent Heat of Fusion

Lfusion Heat required to change a unit mass of substance

from solid to liquid state at its melting point
and 1 atm pressure

Qfusion= m Lfusion Units: J/kg

Latent Heat of ice → water

= 3.34 x 105 J/kg
= 79.7 calories / gram
Latent Heat of Fusion

Lvap Heat required to change a unit mass of substance

from liquid to vapour (gaseous) state at its boiling point
at 1 atm pressure

Qvap= m Lvap

Units: J/kg

Latent Heat of water → steam = 2.23 x 106 J/kg

= 533 calories/ gram

Heat Required in Change of State
Example MCQ type Question [ +4 , -1]

Heat required to convert one gram of ice at 0°C

into steam at 100°C is -

A. 100 cal
B. 0.01 kcal
C. 720 cal
D. 1 kcal
Heat Required in Change of State
Heat Required in Change of State
Example MCQ type Question [ +4 , -1]
The accompanying graph shows the variation of temperature (T) of
one kilogram material with heat (Q) supplied to it. At O, the
substance is in solid state. Which of the following interpretations
from the graph is correct?

A. T2 is the melting point of the solid.

B. BC represents the change of state
from solid to liquid.
C. (Q1 – Q2) represents the latent heat of
fusion of the substance.
D. (Q3 – Q1) represents the latent heat of
vaporisation of the liquid.
Principle of Calorimetry

According to principle of Calorimetry:

Heat lost by hot substance = Heat gained by cold substance

Qgivenby1 = Qacceptedby2

m1s1 (T1 - T) = m2s2 (T - T2)
