Discussion
Example If the focus of the parabola (1, 2) and feet of perpendicular on any
two tangents to this parabola from focus are (3, 4) and (4, 6), then
find the vertex of the parabola.
Example If two tangents drawn from a point P to the parabola y2 = 4x are at
right angles, then the locus of P is
2010 M
A. 2x + 1 = 0 B. x = -1

C. 2x - 1 = 0 D. x = 1
Example The equation of a tangent to the parabola y2 = 8x is y = x + 2. The
point on this line from which the other to the parabola is
perpendicular to the given tangent is 2007 M

A. (2, 4) B. (-2, 0)

C. (-1, 1) D. (0, 2)
Equation of
Normal
Normal to a parabola at point P is defined to be the line perpendicular to
the tangent to the parabola at point P and passing through point P

T N
1. Point form:
2. Parametric form:

Equation of the normal at ‘t’ is tx + y = 2at + at3

3. Slope form:

y = mx - 2am - am3
NOTE:

Maximum three normals can be drawn from a point P(h, k) to the

parabola y2 = 4ax. If their slopes are m1, m2 and m3 then

m1 + m2 +m3 = 0;
m1 m2 + m2 m3 + m3 m1 = (2a-h)/a;
m1 m2 m3 = -k/a
NOTE:

Relation between slope and parameter:

If slope of normal at point P with parameter ‘t’ is ‘m’ then
m = -t
NOTE:

If P(t1), Q(t2) and R(t3) are three points on which the normals are
concurrent, then these are called conormal points.

1. t1 + t2 + t3 = 0

1. Centroid of triangle with conormal points as vertices lies on the

axis of parabola
Example Let L be a normal to the parabola y2 = 4x. If L passes through the
point (9,6), then L is given by

A. y-x+3=0 B. y + 3x - 33 = 0 2011 Adv.

C. y + x - 15 = 0 D. y -2x + 12 = 0
Example Let P be the point on the parabola, y2 = 8x which is at a minimum
distance from the centre C of the circle, x2 + (y + 6)2 = 1. Then the
equation of the circle, passing through C and having its centre at P is:
A. x2 + y2 - x/4 + 2y - 24 = 0 B. x2 + y2 - 4x + 9y + 18 = 0 2016 M

C. x2 + y2 - 4x + 8y + 12 = 0 D. x2 + y2 - x + 4y - 12 = 0
Example Tangent and normal are drawn at P(16, 16) on the parabola y2 = 16x,
which intersect the axis of the parabola at A & B, respectively. If C is
the centre of the circle through the points P, A and B and
∠CPB = θ, then a value of tan θ: 2018 M

A. 2 B. 3

C. 4/3 D. 1/2
Example The tangent PT and the normal PN to the parabola y2 = 4ax at a
point P on it meet its axis at points T and N, respectively. The locus
of the centroid of the triangle PTN is a parabola whose
HOMEWORK 2009 Adv.
A. Vertex is (2a / 3 , 0) B. Directrix is x = 0

C. Latus rectum is 2a / 3 D. Focus is (a, 0)

Example Let P be the point on the parabola y2 = 4x which is at the shortest
distance from the center S of the circle x2 + y2 - 4x - 16y + 64 = 0.
Let Q be the point on the circle dividing the line segment SP
HOMEWORK internally. Then

A. SP = 2√5 2016 Adv.

B. SQ : QP = (√5 + 1) : 2
C. The x - intercept of the normal to the parabola at P is 6
D. The slope of the tangent to the circle at Q is 1/2
