Section Policies Health and Well-being: College life can be overwhelming. Your mental and physical well-being are of utmost importance. If you are struggling in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Attendance and Participation: ● Attendance at both lecture and discussion sections is mandatory. For discussion sections, attendance will be recorded at the beginning of class, so make sure you show up on time! ● Late policy: ○ Students walking in after attendance is taken will be marked l ate. ○ Students walking in ten minutes after the start of class will be marked absent. ● Participation will be calculated based on a student’s: ○ Preparedness for class. You are expected to come to class having read/viewed the required works, and with thoughts or questions prepared with regard to those works. ○ Willingness to engage in discussion ○ Quality of a student’s in class engagement (as opposed to sheer quantity)
Classroom Conduct: ● Discrimination of any degree or form on the basis of race, gender, disability, religion, citizenship, etc. is strictly prohibited in my classroom. ● In addition, you are expected to engage respectfully and in good faith with others, including your fellow classmates, me, and the various authors/texts/artworks we will encounter.
Technology: ● Phone, tablet, computer, etc. use is not permitted in the discussion section. All electronics must be silenced and put away by the beginning of class. ● There may be times when electronics are permitted in class because of their usefulness in completing a certain activity. However, unless explicit permission has been given, electronics remain prohibited. ● Exceptions are made solely on the basis of disability accommodations w ith the proper paperwork. Please contact me as soon as possible if you have such an accommodation.
Late Work and Extensions: ● Acceptance of late work is considered on a case by case basis. Please understand that I reserve the right to decline to accept any late assignments. ○ Exceptions are made only for documented emergencies. ● Extensions may be granted on a case by case basis but m ust be arranged with me no less than 36 hours in advance. ○ The n ew deadline will be firm. No further extensions will be granted. ○ Exceptions to the 36-hour rule may be granted in the case of an emergency (physical/mental health, family tragedy, etc.).
Drafts and Outlines: ● I am happy to look at drafts or outlines of written work. Understand that my ability to give detailed feedback on your work depends on the amount of time I have to look at it before the deadline, so it is in your best interest to get drafts to me as early as possible. Drafts or outlines must be sent a minimum of 48 hours in advance in order to receive feedback.
Email Policy: ● Please allow up to 24 hours for me to respond to email correspondence. ● In order for me to get to your email as quickly as possible, please include the title of the course in the subject line and sign off with your name. ● I expect your communications over email to be polite, professional, and respectful.
Grade Complaints: ● I will accept grade complaints with certain stipulations: ○ You must wait a minimum of 24 hours and a maximum of three days after receiving your grade to dispute it. ○ To dispute the grade, you must submit a one or two paragraph explanation detailing why the grade received was in error.
