Sin

The Fall Of Man (Gn 3: 1-20)

Sin is an offense against reason, truth and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love
for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It has been
defined as an utterance, a deed or a desire contrary to the eternal law. (CCC 1849)
Why is there sin and evil in the world? (CFC 400)
o The bible teaches that sin and evil come not from God who created everything
good, but from the willful disobedience of man who abused his God-given
freedom at the dawn of the history.
What does original sin mean? (CFC 401)
o It can be the sin which brought evil and brokenness into the world.
o It can also be the actual sinful state into which we are born, the essence of which
is the privation of sanctifying grace, and some of who consequences are evident in
the outside sinful situation and the inner effect of disordered desires we all
experience within.
How does Church teaching explain original sin? (CFC 405)
o The Church clarifies that we do not inherit Adam’s personal sin, but in
consequences, that is that as members of the human race, we are born deprived of
the sanctifying grace, into the sinful condition in the world with our weakened
human nature resulting from his sin.
What is meant by capital sins? (CFC 410)
o Capital or “root sins” are basic evil inclinations or disvalued which are the origin
of many sinful thoughts, words, or deed. They manifest the evil tendencies within
each of us which are the effect of original sin.
o Pride, Anger, Covetousness, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, and Sloth
The Gravity of Sin (CCC 1855)
o Mortal Sin destroys charity in the heart of a man by a grave violation of God’s
law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by
preferring an inferior good to Him.
⦁ Grave Matter
⦁ Full Knowledge
⦁ Deliberate Consent
o Venial Sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it.
⦁ In a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard
prescribed by the mortal law, or when he disobeys the moral law in
a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete
consent.

APPENDIX A
A. Creation
To “create” means to put and keep something in existence (CFC 351)
No creature has the infinite power necessary to “create” in the proper sense of the word,
that is, to produce and give being to that which had in no way possessed it- to call into
existence out of nothing (DS 3624 as cited in CCC 318)
Creation is the foundation of “all God’s saving plans”, the “beginning of the history of
salvation” that culminates in Christ. (CCC 280)
The world was made for the glory of God. St. Bonaventure explains that God created all
things not to increase his glory but to show it forth and communicate it for God has no
other reason for creating than His love and goodness. (CCC 293)
In affirming that God is the ultimate cause of all that exists, genesis gives its ultimate
meaning and purpose- “WHY” the world exists. It does not treat “HOW” the physical
world came to be in its present conditions, which is what the theory of evolution tries to
explain. (CFC 357)
Christian Faith teaches that human persons are the center and crown of all things on
earth. (CFC 361)

Stewardship
o Gifted with intellect and free will, we are entrusted with a great privilege and
responsibility to preserve and nurture His creation as he said,
“Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over
the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move
on the earth. See, I give you every seed-bearing plant all over the earth
and every tree that has seed bearing fruit on it to be your food; and to all
the animals of the land, all the birds of the airs, and all the living
creatures that crawl on the ground, I give all the green plants for food.
And so it happened.” (Genesis 1: 28-30)
