INTRODUCTION
The Problem and its setting
A vast majority of social media users are students and the youth. In the recent decades the
social media plays a pivotal role in the mass communication. The amount of time allocated for internet
usage of the students and the youth has increased dramatically with the increase of latest social media
networks and as a result the reading habit of the youth seems to be dramatically decreasing. Research
conducted through questionnaires and the interviews and the final result. It further investigates the
negative impact of the youth and students by the social media on their reading habit. Reading is capable
of enriching one’s intellectual capabilities and it develops insights into human problems and has a major
impact on their attitudes towards society. Social media which is designed with the intention of promoting
social connection seems to be not fulfilling its main objective by reducing the reading habit of the
students and the many youths. In addition, they can also increase the perceived credibility and worth of
a project. On the other hand, they are expensive to acquire advertising space. They are also to possible
distortion of information during editing.
Therefore, students at all levels, including adolescents and adults, are expected and encouraged
to engage in both recreational and academic types of reading. In this research observed that students of
BSHS have poor reading habit and slow learner spelling. Thus the researcher wants to find out the
influence of Facebook on their reading habit to achieve their full potential and pursue their learning after
they shall leave in this school of BSHS.

Statement of the problem

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between using Facebook and Reading
Habits of students in Grade 12 students of Barretto Senior High School.
1. To what extent do students use Facebook?
1.1 At home;
1.2 School?
2. How may reading habits of the student we described?
3. Is there a significant relationship between using Facebook and Reading habits?
4. What is the implication of the findings of the study to students and parents?

Scope and Delimitation

The study is focused on influence of Facebook on the Reading Habits of students. (To examine
the relationship between using Facebook and Reading Habits of students), we will be conduct of Grade12
students at Barretto Senior High School S.Y 2019-2020. The research will use the correlation design of
research. It will not cover the other social media platform and its relationship with reading habits of
student. The limitation of this only on the Grade 12 students at Barretto Senior High School. The research
used survey questionnaire as the main instrument to gather information. The findings further indicated
that there are numerous negative impacts of social networking to the reading habits of students, which
may reduce students’ focus on learning and reading time. It was found out that internet addiction, being
distracted while reading in classroom and at home, easily makes students to come late to class or miss
lectures, and exposing students to immoral act are the negative impacts of social networking sites on the
reading habits of students.

Significance of the study

The result of the study will be beneficial to the following:
Teacher. For they will better understand that using Facebook and Reading Habits of the
students may contribute by enhancing their teaching strategies.

Parent. The parents are direct and baseline in communication in relation of their child’s and
knowing the influence of Facebook on the reading habits. A parents will be at concerns of convincing
their child and guiding them.

Student. This study will help the students to develop their reading habits. They will know
where to put an effort in order to thrive in their reading skills.
FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

Review of Related Literature

Influence of Reading Habits among Students.
Comprehension skills help the learner to comprehend the importance of words in isolation and
in context. Palani (2012) thinks reading is a process of assessing, judging, envisioning and critical
thinking. Reading is a basic instrument for the exchange of knowledge and the habit of reading is an
academic activity that builds abilities in reading methods. To know about the world and its environment,
a child makes a difference himself through the reading of books, daily papers, and different magazines.
Once the child has been instructed to read and has built up the affection for books. According to Philip
(2009), “Reading habit tends to be associated with coursework and examinations, rarely with pleasure”.
However, it is obvious that irrespective of the discipline it will be difficult if not impossible for students
to exhibit their talents when they failed to read extensively. Devendran (2007) has shown that the more
the students watch the reading of their instructors, the more they need to attempt it. The more the students
listen to teachers read to them, the better they get to be in reading. McKool and Gespass (2009) found
that teachers who read for joy and who actualize reading lessons, utilize writing circles, give chances to
reading discussions will probably urge their students to participate in quiet reading sessions, talk about
their reading experiences, and suggest different books to students.

Importance of Reading to Students.

Kurtus (2002) opines that reading habit is a fundamental practice that can leave a positive effect
on all age groups. The study stressed further that the acquisition of knowledge through reading is a decent
approach, however, it must be productive information, and it must encourage a man to get on in a
profession, pass an examination, be great at decision, or get hold of a status for learning. In addition as
indicated by Ilegogie (2005) reading helps in the advancement of one's communication skills and
insightfulness. Advancement through reading is more advanced inducing, enduring, compelling and
helpful to humankind when held in the reading society. According to Sesnan (2003) cited in Mesfin
(2008) stressed the significance of reading as one of the fundamental skills which everybody
acknowledges is a basic tool for survival in the present day world. Akinbola (2007) observed that the
significance of reading cannot be ignored. Reading is important to literacy and it is an emancipatory
apparatus that frees one from ignorance, academic infection, destitution and frustration. Tella and
Akande (2007) express that reading is a vital part of life which is not just about pleasure yet a need; the
fundamental device of training. Reading is key for each and each person so as to manage new and
developing learning in the evolving universe of technological advances.
Effect of Reading Habits on Students’ Performance.
According to Rubin (2002) is of the view that students with poor reading habit have a higher
opportunity of taking part in hostile social practices, such as delinquency, truancy, school violence,
tormenting, hacking of computers and examination malpractices. While poor reading habit can be
instrumental in the destruction of any individual who is tormented with it, good reading habit grows
consistently and brings together a valuable personality. The acquisition of reading abilities does not just
affect or enhance confidence in language expressions, but in different subjects such as: social studies,
science, arithmetic etc. A student who lacks reading ability does not do well in class activities and this
deficiency is extended throughout his/her academic lifetime. In addition (Fosudo, 2010). “Reading plays
an invaluable role in promoting ideas and ideals, which enhance both individual development and the
socio-economic development of the nation”. Reading is a lifelong habit, the real wellspring of access to
the information. It is taken as an understood practice that backs a person to.

Conceptual framework
INDEPENDENT VARIABLES DEPENDENT VARIABLES

FACEBOOK READING HABITS

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between using Facebook and
reading habit. The researchers will make a survey questionnaire and statistical tools. After this process,
a dependent variable will be suggested either printed or non-printed. Individuals read for different
reasons and purposes, some of which include for leisure, leisure, relaxation, information and or
knowledge. Reading is an individual's ability to identify symbols and the connection of suitable
meaning to them.

Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between using Facebook on the reading habits when grouped
according to their profile.
Definition of terms
Facebook. Facebook is a website which allows users, who sign-up for free profiles, to connect with
friends, work colleagues or people they don’t know, online. It allows users to share pictures, music,
videos, and articles, as well as their own thoughts and opinions with however many people they like.
Habit. are routine behaviors done on a regular basis. They are recurrent and often unconscious patterns
of behavior and are acquired through frequent repetition. Many of these are unconscious as we don’t
even realize we are doing them.
Influence. Is the power to have an important effect on someone or something? If someone influences
someone else, they are changing a person or thing in an indirect but important way. Sometimes a
person who influences another doesn't intend to have any effect, but sometimes they are using
influence to benefit themselves. An example of a personal benefit or advantage would be the use of
political influence. Influence is also a verb, from Latin inflamer to flow in.
Reading habit. It’s a mental process, there are many definitions of reading. Reading is when someone
works into a written text and starts to absorb the information from the written linguistic message.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter the research method used the operational framework of the research specifically, population
frame and sampling scheme, description of the respondents, instrument used, data gathering procedure and
statistical treatment of data.

Research design
This study was quantitative research therefore it used correlational approach. The main purpose of the
researcher was to examine the relationship between using Facebook and reading habits of Grade 12 students.
According to Creswell (2012), Correlation can be defined as the statistical test used to determine the tendency or
pattern for two (or more) variables or sets of data to vary consistently.
Sampling procedure
The sampling that the researcher used in this study was purposive sampling technique. The purposive
sampling technique is a type of non- probability sampling that is most effective when on need to study a certain
cultural domain with knowledge experts with in. According to Ritchie (2003), defines this sampling approach as
a strategy where “Members of a sample are chosen with a purpose to represent a location or type in relation to
the criterion” .So in summary the researchers choose specific people within a sample population.

Research instrument
The main instrument of the study is a survey questionnaire designed to gather the data. The questionnaire
is composed of two parts which is part using Facebook at home and the reading habit usage questionnaire.

Respondents
The respondents of the study are the Grade 12 student at Barretto Senior High School in Olongapo City.
The total respondents of this research are 100 respondents.

ABM 12 24.0
GAS 3 6.0
HUMSS 16 32.0
HE 10 20.0
ICT 9 18.0
TOTAL 50 100.0
Data collection procedure
The researchers followed ethical procedures in order for them to achieve the objectives of this work. The
first step we create a request letter and ask for permission to the Principal, as for approval, the researchers
submitted the letter to the Principal of Barretto Senior High School, asking for consent to administer the and upon
approval, they retrieved the letter. Second, they prepared in a form of a scale which included all the variables
presented in their statement of the problem. The researchers proposed the to their research adviser and asked for
her approval before they were finally able to reproduce enough copies of the questionnaires intended for their
participants to answer. In administering questionnaires, the researchers had an extension of time after class to
avoid distraction of class discussion. The participants were given enough time to read and answer each statement
sincerely. Third, was the survey sheets distribution and explain the instruction to the respondents and lastly, after
data gathering, analysis and interpretation have been performed and the results from the tests were collected for
tallying the scores and interpret through statistical treatment with explanation.

Data analysis
For the statistical treatment of the data, the following tool will be utilized through the Microsoft excel.

1. Frequency and percentage distribution. This will be employed to illustrate the profile of the
respondent.
2. Mean. This will be employed to determine the central point in the distribution of measurement as the
financial capability, using Facebook and reading habits at school and at home.
3. Pearson Product Moment of Correlation (r). This was used to determine the significant relationship
between using Facebook on the Reading habits of the student.
