1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)


i. Self- conceptualization. Can we conceptualize ourselves without the
standards of the world?
ii. Self- presentation. Is there a term/study about how someone varies his/her
self- presentation depending on social groups?
iii. “Through the Looking Glass” theory

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought


that self-determination was a concept influenced by the concept of
professionalism alone- where there is the need to improve our ability to
interact with people. I thought that people were motivated to do things
purely by the goal of being socially favorable. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that self-determination
can also be fueled by the desire to better oneself for themselves; for the
increased ease of their lives as they grow and develop into better versions of
themselves.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that people –
in terms of the social self - only exposed to the public the best-version they
perceive to be of themselves; but also fail at times to hide their “less
favorable” traits. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I
now think/realize that this is not the common case. Several people have
been discovered to completely (instead of partially) disassociate themselves
with their real-life persona once online.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought that the version
of ourselves would remain constant even as we aged. I thought that the first
versions of ourselves acquired at birth would also be the version of ourselves
that we carry out to the present times. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that according to the
“Through the Looking Glass” theory the self is something we acquire through
multiple factors such as our interactions with other people.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. Can we be self-motivated without external stimulations? Because if we
say “just to make ourselves better”, isn’t that still relative to societies
standards?
ii. Can we 100% put into self-presentation our self-conceptualization without
being limited by the influences and perspectives of other people?
iii. If the “Through the Looking Glass” theory believes that the self is
something we acquire and not something we are born with, does that
mean we don’t actually get to choose who we are? Or do we get to
choose who we are by choosing who we interact with?
