Question 4

a. Based on your results, are lipids soluble in both acetone and methanol?

Yes, because there was color change in both acetone and methanol.

b. Based on your results, which damages membranes more: 50% methanol or 25% acetone?

25% acetone

c. In which solvent are lipids most soluble?

In 45% acetone, because the color was the most intense (highest) at this concentration.

d. The concentration of solvent affects its ability t dissolve lipids. Based on your results, did the
highest concentration of both solvents cause the most damage?

Yes, as the concentration increases, the color intensity also increases.

e. What other solvents might be interesting to test in this experiment?

Some solvents that might be interesting to test in this experiment would be NaOH, HCl, Potassium
permanganate and I-Hexase.

f. What was the purpose of tube 7?

The purpose was to show that in isotonic solution or environment, the cellular membranes will not be
damaged.

g. How accurate were your hypothesized rankings for the organic solvent treatments?

The hypothesized rankings are not accurate. It was hypothesized earlier that the highest will be 50%
methanol and the lowest will be 1% acetone. The result of the experiment was not like the hypothesis.
The highest damage was seen in 45% acetone and the lowest on 1% methanol.

Question 2.

a. which temperature damaged membranes the most? which the least? how do you know?

- the test tube no. 1 damaged most of the membranes of the beets while test tube nos. 5 and 6 were the
least since based on our observations we can see damaged membranes on the surface of the beet and
the color intensity of test tube no. 1 is more compared to the other test tube and giving test tubes 5 and
6 a lighter shade meaning a few damage occurred.

b. in general, which is more damaging to membranes, extreme heat or extreme cold? why?

- extreme heat is more damaging than extreme cold because extreme heat destroys the membrane of
the beet while extreme cold causes the membrane to puncture due to the expansion of fluids when it
freezes.

c. if the results of the experimeny are easily observed with the unaided eye, why use a
spectrophotometer?

- a spectrophotometer is more specific rather than just observing with our eyes since it has a wide range
of electromagnetic spectrum than we can't identify with just our eyes. our eyes see one certain color but
not the whole shaed of that color that this devices gives.

d. the beets were subjected to cold temperatures longer than tonhot temperatures to make sure that
the beet sections were thoroughly treated. why does freezing treatment require more time?

- it takes more time to freeze the beet to let the formation of the beet membrane expand than to
submerge the beet on a hot temperature to further damage the membrane.

e. how accurate were your hypothesized rankings for organic solvent treatments?

- based from our findings and the actual results of the activity, it is accurate in terms of description
where the extreme heat damages the beet's membrane more than the extreme cold. in terms of the
spectrophotometer, identifying the color of the sample is difficult to know where the range of the color
lies on the color standards that's why some of the sample are the same in terms of color intensity.
