REFLECTION ON:
“Australian’s Hardest Prison: Lockdown OZ: Maximum Security”

It was known to be one of the toughest prison in the state of Western Australia at
modern time. The Causarina Prison may cater over 600 prison, and there was a
documentation that allowed to see the inmate’s condition inside the prison, and shows
as the ordinary days in the prison with what the staff have to handle day for day basis.
And some of the facilities and equipment makes them different from other prison.

Causarina Prison is the maximum prison for male prisoners- particularly long term
prison- in Western Australia. Surrounded by a range of state-of the art security devices,
the prison has a special unit for intensive, high security supervision of offender. Causarian
prison is modern in terms of facilities and the capacity of prison to be organized in
handling their prisoners
The danger inside the prison is never far away because of the hardcore
criminals, includes serial killers, rapist, sex offender, and smuggler. Prisoners refuse to
confine, they may use serious measures in order to guarantee that prisoner will get. If
the prisoner has it signed of danger from other inmates they may use to put special
handling unit in prison. Aside from that we able to see how they treat some of their
prisoners invariably it their best of insuring the safety
They do have also a modern security devoices such fences as the first line of
defense , vision and audio sensor to take any suspicious activity, metal detector, and the
securities next to fences waiting for those who are attempting to escape from
Causarian Prison, which mandated for shoot to kill order
For the safety their staff takes out the all unnecessary equipment through operation
greyhound.

The difference of Australia’s Causarina prison from other countries is the way they
interacts with prisoners by talking and being along inside of them as being the
fundamental safety mechanism. It operates the state’s biggest infirmary which about the
same size as a small country hospital. They do also has educational and vocational
training unit that provides a variety of workshops where prisoners can gain formal
qualifications including in learning metal fabrication, cabinet making, boot and shoe
manufacturing, printing, baking and making concrete products.

They use to have workshops which designed to replicate the outside world but they
are ensuring the security and safety issues must met, and to secure the safety of the staff
as well as the prisoners all tolls are accounted for at the beginning and at the end of
workshops. They help the live after prison, they are offered jobs in prison. They even
have a art center for prisoners.
In term with the visitors: letters, cards may use to smuggle marijuana or other drug
paraphernalia, they has a security center, they deciphers unusual phone calls or
messages for unusual trafficking, in smuggling drug, all precaution use to prevent the
trafficking of drug inside the facility with close supervision, they have also dogs to check
visitors.

Aside from that they also adapts culture indifferences such as cooking, they adapts
traditional cooking. There are also many aboriginal prisoners, they communicate in tribal
language which is another challenge for prison staff.

Prison system in Philippines, especially in management: consistent with universal

standards, the Philippine Government established its own national standards in reviewing
its correctional system for prisoners/detainees administered by the Department of Justice,
Bureau of Corrections and Bureau of Jails Management and Penology of the Department
of Interior and local Government. The correctional system consists of rehabilitation and
organized care and treatment program aimed at the promotion of the dignity of the
confined persons in particular and correctional community. Foremost, provision of basic
needs of prisoners is the prime factor to be fulfilled. By human standards, all
accommodations provided for the use of inmates, particularly sleeping accommodations
shall meet all requirements. The system is comprehensive multidisciplinary rehabilitation
program aimed at the total human development, livelihood opportunity, enhancement and
other medical provision.

The most common problem of prisoners/detainees was the insufficiency or lack of

food provision due to the delay in release of food allotment and inadequate or unsanitary
food preparation. In certain jails, food expenses were shouldered by police personnel and
relatives of inmates/detainees. Aside from that other country can hold many prisoners but
can be spacious in the side of inmate. The facilities is very innovative in such ways they
can put precautionary measures such as cameras, computers. Etc.

Understanding prison management in the Philippine: current prison management

models strictly prohibit inmates from assisting with prison administration or governance.
This is feasible in developed countries where government can provide adequate
resources, security and personnel. It is, not however, realistic in developing countries like
Philippines which characterized by poverty, corruption and under resourcing of
correctional facilities. In such circumstances, inmate leaders tend to share governance
with prison administrators. Despite occurring out of necessity, not by design, this system
normalizes social conditions within a prison. Thank you.
