PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
I chose to issue reasons for the occurrence of transgenderism in society because many
individuals who embark on a transgender journey, have many interesting reasons for their choice
of change. Expected benefits as a student of English are to gain more knowledge and develop a
better understanding of why people choose to be transgender. I also expect to adapt a more open
minded way of thinking so that I can view things from different point of views and understand
these point of views. Skills that are being used are my research skills and analyzing skills. These
skills will be used when collecting data and when finalizing my information. To collect relevant
information, I will view numerous YouTube videos, read articles and visit different websites
relating to my topic. The data/ stimuli was collected by doing research on various search engines
and surfing the web to find and select suitable data which related to my sub-topic.

GROUP REPORT
Transgender People in History by Devon Ashby on Ranker.com is an essay that shows the
diversity of situations a transgender person can be in and also the importance that they can play in
society as they are just normal people. A scene from the show Degrassi titled “My Body Is a Cage”
was chosen as it shows the struggles Transgender people face every day and the confusion that
takes place because of their sexual orientation. The Poem “Mirror Mirror” by Arkitchen298 was
chosen as well because it shows the self-discovery and investigation that is needed as you transition
as a transgender person. It shows the struggle and self-image of the individual.
We have chosen these three stimuli because we have found them to each epitomize the
essence of what Transgenderism is today. They are informative, concise and reliable with the
information that they share and bring creative and insightful perspectives on the topic in unique
ways.
The process by which we have chosen the stimuli consists of two main steps. In the first
step, each group member wrote down the three main sub-topics that they believed were most
important on a piece of paper. The papers were gathered and the poll was tallied, resulting in The
Evolution of Transgenderism, Reasons for Transgenderism and the Societal Issues that Arise from
Transgenderism being chosen as the most important aspects. The second step included viewing
each of the three stimuli from the selected sub-topics and then discussing each of the sources to
see which would be most suitable in the SBA. Finally, three sources were chosen that
complimented the final SBA.

REFLECTION
In today’s world many people of different cultures, races and backgrounds are becoming
transgender. Transgenderism occurs because of varying reasons. A common reason is that many
individuals do not feel comfortable with their sex, for example, persons who were born male would
rather female body parts and vice versa. Another common reason is because of bullying. At a
young age, children would have been bullied mainly because of their appearance. Boys, who would
look like girls and girls, who would sometimes look like boys. To overcome bullying they would
permanently change their gender. Lastly another common reason is the admiration of ways and
abilities of the opposite gender. There have been many instances of men wanting to wear skirts but
are afraid of being judged. Heavy judgement is avoided by becoming transgender, which in fact is
quite ironic. All in all, from watching videos and reading poems, I can come to a conclusion that
transgender persons are very self-conscious mainly because they are uncomfortable. I admire the
way in which some persons cope with the mistreatment and judgement. This brings about a positive
feeling.
I gathered three pieces of data which would help me to gather my reasons, two poems and
a video. From both poems the writers used emotional and descriptive language to bring across and
actual feeling of what they went through, or have to go through. These ways of bringing across the
message were beneficial, they influenced my emotions and I felt sympathy for the individuals.
From the video, the speaker also used formal and descriptive language. The video also entailed
bold text, this helped to bring across the point to the viewers.
My reasons on transgenderism was a very interesting topic. During my research, I learned
that there are many reasons why individuals become transgender. I now have a better
understanding of why these choices are made to change one’s sex. Sometimes it is what they
want to do and other times becoming transgender is what they have to do. I also learned that
many trans genders have a very fragile or poor self-esteem and they take criticism harshly. This
is why bullying about appearance plays a big role in transgenderism and is one of the most
common reasons. Before conducting this research, I viewed transgender persons as weird or
crazy individuals, my exact words would be “God made you how he wanted you, why would you
want to change that.” I now understand the different issues and decisions trans genders have to
make which would direct their minds into thinking that something is wrong with them. These
issues make them feel inferior and even confused about who they really should be. On a whole I
have learnt to be more tolerant and inclusive to all; and to be less judgmental. They are nothing
less than the human you are and I am. ~3~
ORAL PRECENTATION PLAN
My oral presentation spoke about:

o How I view the topic.

o The way the individuals feel.
o This will be in point form.

poem.
o Figurative language would be used in the sources.

period to become who they truly want to be. And it doesn't get any easier once the transition is over.
They still have to deal with ignorance and transphobia every day. However, there are more and
more transgender celebrities who are publicly coming out to fight for the rights of trans people
everywhere. If you want to see who some of our favorite ones are, check out our video on 10
