INTRODUCTION

Adequate sleep optimally impacts mental functioning and therefore impacts students’

performance on school and ultimately grades received. The pattern of sleep one experiences in a

24-hour period directly correlates with physical health, mood, and mental functioning.

Cognitive performance is susceptible to inadequate sleep durations, defined as fewer than

7 hours a day for teens. Inadequate sleep decreases general alertness and impairs attention,

resulting in slowed cognitive processing. Lack of adequate sleep also interferes with the function

of brain structures critical to cognitive processes. The most notably impacted structure is the

prefrontal cortex, which executes higher brain functions including language, working memory,

logical reasoning, and creativity (Zeek, Savoie, and Westrick)

Studies assessing the impact of sleep on academic performance focus primarily on teens,

adolescents, and undergraduate students. Few studies have explored sleep habits in populations of

students. Those studies that have, found sleep complaints were common in senior high school

student and poor sleep habits were correlated with changes in academic performance (Zeek,

Savoie, and Westrick)

PROCEDURE

An anonymous, voluntary, self-administered paper questionnaire was administered to

Grade XI Rectitude students in Brokenshire College, all of them participated. The questionnaire

was composed of two sections: student's sleep duration every night and academic performance. In
our questionnaire for survey, students just need to check the box according to their hours of sleep,

8-9 hours and above, 5-7 hours, 3-4 hours, 3-2 hours, and less than 1 hours.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This section deals on the presentation, analysis and interpretation of the data gathered in

the conduct of survey.

TABLE 1: Extent of Grade XI Rectitude in Brokenshire College in their Sleep Duration

Indicator Frequency Percentage Level

8-9 and 5 12.5% Very

above hours Good

5-7 hours 22 55% Good

3-4 hours 8 20% Not

Good

1-2 hours 2 5% Harmful

Less than 3 7.5% Very

1 hour Harmful

As can be glean in table 1, a frequency of 22 with a percentage of 55 with a level description

of Good indicates that many of the students of Grade XI Rectitude in Brokenshire College Sleep

for 5-7 hrs. per night. The lowest with a frequency of 5 l, with a percentage of 5, in a level

description harmful indicates that the Grade XI Rectitude sleep for only 1-2 hrs. per night.
Table 2: Extent of Grade XI Rectitude in their academic performnce
INDICATOR Range (W.A)

8-9 and above hours 90-95

5-7 hours 85-90

3-4 hours 81-85

1-2 hours 81- 85

Less than 1 hour 81-85

As can be seen in table 2, an indicator of 8-9 and above hours of sleep of the students has

an weighted average grade of 90-95. In an indicator of 5-7 hours of sleep, the weighted average

grade of the students are 85-90. In he indicator of 3-4 hours, 1-2 hours and less than 1 hour of

sleep, students' weighted average grade is 81-85.

CONCLUSION

Based on the study, the following conclusion are drawn by the researchers;

Mostly of the Grade XI Rectitude respondents, their seep duration ranges for about 5-7

hours per night which is good.

In terms of the academic performance of the students, sleep duration really affects their

performance in school, the students who sleep for about 8-9 hours got higher grade that ranges 90-

95 due to their attentiveness in school because they sleep for about 8-9 hours which is very good

for their health, the same as with 5-7 hours of sleep, they got a better grade of 85-89. For the

students who sleep at night for about 3-4, 1-2,and less than 1 hour which is not good for the health,

their grades ranges from 81-85.
