Introduction
Homework is a term that many have used but few have defined formally. Keith (1986)
defines homework as that work which teachers typically assign for completion outside the normal
class period. ... Likewise, various benefits to students, parents and teachers have been de- scribed.
Homework has always been a part of the life of every Student, Teacher and School. This is a way
in which a teacher gives a “clue” or “hint” to the student on what possible topic or activities that
they are going to tackle next. Most students prefer not to have any activity after a long day in the
classroom but teachers, school and parents alike would like to push homework in order for their
child(student) to show interest in learning.
In the traditional way of teaching, almost all subject is encouraged to give an homework
(assignment) to the student to assess their learningand help them prepare themselves for the
coming subject in the next day. Homework are generally design to be short because they are just
the introductory to the next lesson. Thus, it is designed to be short and less stressful than an
examination or a year-end project.
In the recent time, some people pushes the idea that Homework should be eliminated from
the current curriculum of teaching because improvements in students are not that seen. But in the
end, the Department of Education (DepEd) came to an order that Homework are given on
weekdays except Friday because it is believed that weekends are time for relaxation and a perfect
time for family bonding.
There are many argues and debates but Homeworks has its own function and even guiding
principles that will help any person understand its importance and function not just in schools but
also to the improvement of the students and community.

A. Homework
Here are some generally accepted definition of homework;
Homework, or a homework assignment, is a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to
be completed outside the class. Common homework assignments may include required reading,
a writing or typing project, mathematical exercises to be completed, information to be reviewed
before a test, or other skills to be practiced.
The effect of homework is debated. Generally speaking, homework does not improve academic
performance among children and may improve academic skills among older students, especially
lower-achieving students. Homework also creates stress for students and their parents and reduces
the amount of time that students could spend outdoors, exercising, playing, working, sleeping, or
in other activities. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homework)
B. Functions of Homework
There are four(4) functions of Homework by Vatterott (2009. These are the following;
1. Prelearning – The homework is a preparation for an in-depth discussion of the next lesson by
geeting an introduction and background.
2. Checking for Understanding – By the of the homework, teachers gain insight into student
learning.
3. Practice – Homework is an opportunity for practice of rote skills such as mutliplication tables,
spelling words, or facts that need to be memorized for internalization and mastery.
4. Processing – Homework is used when teachers want student to reflect on concepts discussed
in class, integrate and apply learned concepts and skills in real life, and think of new questions.

C.Guiding Principles in the Use of Homework
For learners to get the most from homework, the following guiding principle may be of
help;
1. Amount and length of work to be given – in giving homework, the purpose, outcome and
level of difficulty should be properly assessed. So that learners that properly articulate their
thoughts and answer tha homework accurately and proficiently. All homework are meant to be
short, therefore it must be properly assessed the length of time needed to accomplish such task
depending on its difficulty and requirements.
2. Parents’ minimum involvement – students are encouraged to answer the assignment
themselves in order for them to completely internalize the topic. That is why parents should just
act as watcher keeping their involvement at minimum. They should let their own child answer
it without asking them to answer the homework for them. “Good Mother is bad Mother”.
3. Assessment of Homework – Feedback in necessary in homework because it helps the general
state of education to improve. For teacher, feedback is necessary because this gives them the
sign that their students are really learning. This also give them the idea if the homeworks are
acceptable or really hard.
4. Factors to consider in the giving of Homework – there are many factors on giving and
assessing the effectiveness of a certain homework. The main consideration should be the chain
of lessons and the level of understanding the students have before moving forward to another
lesson. The Parents and even the Teacher is also a factor because they both serve as the
facilitator of the student in accomplishing the homework.
