Algerian mealtimes
Dear Mark,
Thanks you for informing me about the British mealtimes. It’s my turn to give you information
about Algerian mealtimes.
Unlike the British, the Algerians don’t eat more than three meals a day. First, they have breakfast
when they get up, usually at 7 o'clock .It's made of bread; jam butter, and white coffee. Next they
have lunch at around 12.This is the biggest meal time of the day .Dinner is in the evening at about
20:00.
I hope you have now some information about Algerians meal times.

Yours faithfully
Ahmed

English mealtimes

Hi, Samir!
I am really happy to tell you about food in my country. So, in England we have three main meals
a day.
Breakfast is between (7:00 and 9:00).The traditional English breakfast is called the Full English
breakfast. It’s usually bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes and toast. Lunch is between (12:00 and 1:30
pm). It’s often a light meal of soup, sandwiches and a salad. Most of children have their lunch at
school. Dinner - the main meal – is eaten any time between (6:30 and 8:00 pm). It’s the evening
meal. A traditional dinner is meat or fish with potatoes and vegetables. After that, some people have
pudding, fruits, chocolate cake or an apple pie as a dessert.
On Sundays, the main meal of the day is often eaten at midday instead of the evening. It’s usually
a roast dinner consisting of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and two kinds of vegetables. We eat most
of our food with cutlery (forks, spoons and knives). We pay a lot of attention to good table manners.
Even young children have to eat properly with a knife and a fork.
What about your country? Could you tell me about your eating habits and table manners
especially during the fasting month (Ramadan)?
Waiting to hear from you soon,
Best regards.
Paul

Healthy Food
Healthy food is good for you. You need it for shiny hair and strong bones. You need it so you
can grow tall and feel good. The best part about healthy food is that it is tasty! You can find grains
in bread, rice, and oatmeal. You should eat four servings of grains every day. Milk, cheese, and
yogurt are also important. These will give you strong bones. Meat, beans, fish, and nuts give your
body iron and protein. You can also eat an egg or some peanut butter to help keep your body
healthy. Fruit and vegetables are good to eat. Eat many kinds each week. Chips and cookies are
tasty, but eat only a few at a time. When you eat healthy food, your body will thank you!

Computers
Computer is a new automatic and electronic machine that is used to help man in his work. Van
Newman invented it in 1948.
It is one of the most important inventions of this century. It has a screen, a keyboard, a mouse, a
headphone, etc. It contains five parts: Input, memory, arithmetic and logic, control and output.
Computer can write, play games, perform music and do drawings, etc. It can also store and give
information very quickly; it is able to do the work of hundreds of workers in a very short time.
Nowadays, computers are used in different places: Schools, universities, factories, hospitals and
other public services and even at home; they make our life easier and better.

Pollution
Scientists say that any city with a population of 50.000 or more has some kind of pollution.
Cars and factories give out dangerous fumes, so people have breathing problems. Many old,
famous buildings are in danger of falling down due to acid rain. Visibility is poor because dirty air
limits how far we can see.
Sea animals are threatened with extinction since oil tankers are releasing thick oil in the oceans.
A lot of fish die as industrial waste is poured into the sea. Because of dangerous chemicals from
factories, all forms of life in lakes are damaged. People catch diseases like stomach aches and
diarrhea because sewage water is dumped into rivers.

Table manners in Islam
Muslims are required to follow the example of the prophet Muhamed ( prayers and peace upon
him) because he is the best example for this Ummah.

When we eat , we must mention Allah’s name and eat with the right hand. We shouldn’t drink
standing. Muslims mustn’t breathe or blow into a vessel. They should eat from what’s next to them.

We should not criticize food . We shouldn’t speak while eating .We must take small bites only
and keep our mouths closed.

While finishing eating , Muslims must praise Allah, wipe their mouths with a napkin and wash
their hands to keep healthy.

Letter of complaint
El Anasser, BBA
January 11th, 2017

Mayor of the city

Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about the living conditions in our city. Some of them are due to the
number of cars.

There are too many cars in our streets. People cannot breathe because of the cars’ fumes. These
fumes cause acid rain which kills animals and plants.
I would be grateful if you can add more buses and improve the public transport.
Perhaps you need to encourage people to use bicycles and walk more.
I look forward to receiving your response.
Yours faithfully
Hichem

Educational system in Algeria

The pre-university educational system in Algeria consists of three important stages. First,
pupils go to primary school at six. They study there for five years. At the age of eleven, they take
a final primary school exam. When they succeed, they will move to middle school. The middle
school goes for 4 years, from MS1 to MS4. Students take the brevet exam at the end of MS4. If
they manage to get a pass, they will go to the lycée. There are many streams in the lycée.
Students can choose at the end of the first year in the lycée the stream which they like best if they
meet the required standards. Studies in the lycée run for three years. In the third year, they take
the baccalaureate exam. The baccalaureate is a diploma which allows its holders to register at
university.

The pleasure of success
Success depends really upon your efforts. If you work hard, you will succeed. If you don’t
make efforts you will never feel the pleasure of success. If you don’t work by your own, no one will
give you anything. Perhaps someone will help you once or twice but will not continue helping you
forever.

You are a pupil, start by working to succeed at your exams. It is your last year at the middle
school, so try to get good results and go to secondary school. This will be possible only if you get
good results. If your average is equal or superior to 10/20 which is defined by the ministry of
education, You will be admitted to the first year of the secondary education.

Technology

Technology has revolutionized our lives completely today we cannot think of live without a
television, mobile phones and the latest addition’ our addiction to the internet. The wise internet
has everything in it, what one wants to know. It not only provides connectivity with others but it
stores houses of knowledge, music and plenty of things.
Technology in education has transformed and changed the way we learn. Now, students can use
digital resources to learn about everything from ancient history to nowadays events.
Medical technology is another way that our lives are better by technology. By developing, more
sophisticated machines to treat illnesses, medical engineering experts have helped us fighting
diseases; surgeons are able to make difficult operations through the help of machines.
We can only guess: it could involve things like new cures for diseases, super computers, robots and
more advanced space travel. Experts believe that the evolution of technology is growing day after
day, which means that the rate at which technology is developing is going faster.

Your Rubbish Please !

Each year people throw millions of tons of trash, such as; bottles, boxes, paper, clothing, and
much more. Gradually this has led to major problems: pollution and overuse of resources.

In the 1970’s, European countries began to recycle because glass, plastic and aluminum become
very expensive. Recycling became a solution for both pollution and overuse of resources. Today almost
developed countries have their own system for collecting and recycling their garbage.

However, there are many countries that don’t have a recycling system. People still throw away
materials that can be recycled because there are not any waste banks.

What can be done? We should all keep the 3 R’s in mind. They provide practical solutions to the
trash problem (Reduce / Reuse/ Recycle).

Life in the past (Used to)
Life in the deep past was very hard. People used to live in caves without electricity or gas. To get
their food, they used to hunt animals with spears which used to be made of stone. In addition,
people of that period used to wear animal skins. Furthermore, they used to be fond of some arts
like: drawing on walls and playing the flute. Cavemen who didn’t use to have doors to protect them
from dangerous animals, used to burn fire in the entrance of the cave to frighten these animals.

Emir Abdelkader

Algerian nationalist hero, Emir Abd-el-Kader was born on Sept. 6th, 1808, in Mascara, Algeria.
After the French conquest of Algerian territories, the Arab tribes of the west elected him as their
emir, because he was a man of honor, trust, political spirit and most of all he had the qualities of a
real Muslim leader: fair, wise and faithful to his nation. With great perseverance and courage he
waged a long struggle against the French. He was the founder of modern Algeria. He organized a
true state, and fortified the interior towns by putting an end to the tribal differences and mainly
building a well organized army of resistance which conducted historical battles against the
colonizers, enemies of Islam, for about fifteen years (1832 -1847). Unfortunately, the French
overpowered and arrested this brave leader who chose to exile in Syria till his death in May 26,
1883. El emir died respected by both French and Algerians and by many others throughout the
world, and he remains the Algerian national hero.

Road accident
It was getting darker, but there weren’t any lights on. There were few cars in the street when I was
driving home last Friday evening. Some drivers were hurrying to get back home, but they weren’t
really driving quickly. Neither was I. Suddenly, I noticed a boy riding his bicycle alone at that late
time. At first, I did not pay much attention, but very shortly, things got wrong. While I was turning
left, somehow the boy lost control of his bike. As I became aware of the boy’s trouble, I attempted to
avoid the bike but it was too late. ‘’While the bike was coming too fast, the boy seemed very
frightened and unable to change its direction’’, I told the police officers later. When the boy fell, I
hurried to help him. Fortunately, the crash wasn’t hard enough, so the boy got only minor injuries.

Road accidents (causes and effects)

During the past five years, the number of the Algerians killed annually in car accidents has climbed
to more than 10.000. This needless slaughter on streets and highways can be attributed to three
general causes. Mechanical failures, especially those related to faulty brakes and bald tyres,
account for significant number of fatal accidents. Environmental conditions such as blind corner,
narrow streets, heavy fog, intermittent rain or snow resulting in slippery roads to the grisly
accidents statistics. However, without doubt the most frequently reported factors in car accidents
are errors of human judgment all the way from such follies as excessive speed and drunken driving
to such momentary lapses as failure to signal a turn or a change from one lane to another. He,
Man, behind the wheel is often his own worst enemy.
