Miniature painting

➢ What is miniature painting?

Miniature painting is a traditional


style of painting that is very detailed
usually executed in gouache,
watercolor .
➢ Gouache

a technique of painting with opaque


watercolors prepared with gum.
Persian Miniature
➢ richly detailed paintings which depicts religious or
mythological themes from the region of the Middle
East now known as Iran.
➢ Reached at its peak mainly during (13th - 16th)
century.
➢ probably inspired by Chinese art.
➢ faces are normally youthful and seen in three-quarters
view, Lighting is even, without shadows . Walls and
other surfaces are shown either frontally, building is
hexagonal in plan. Buildings are often shown in
complex views, Costumes and architecture are always
those of the time

Mughal Miniature Painting
➢ Particular style of south asian painting
➢ Developed largely in the court of the mughal
empire(16th - 19th centuries).
➢ Developed and flourished during the reigns
of akbar, shah jahan and jahangir.
➢ Mughal paintings were a unique blend of
indian, persian and islamic styles.
➢ Humayun brought with him two accomplished
persian artists, sayyid ali and abdus samad to
india.
➢ These painting were made because mughal
kings wanted visual records of their deeds as
hunters and conquerors.
➢ The painters focused mostly on court scenes, royal
portraits, natural scenes and land
➢ Mughal Miniature is painted in opaque
watercolour. Other materials used in this
paintings are ink and gold on paper.
➢ Some master artists of 16th and early 17th
centuries are Basawan, Lal, Miskin, Kesu Das, and
Daswanth,Govardhan.

Contemporary miniaturists

Imran Qureshi
Imran Qureshi is teaching miniature painting at
the National College of Lahore and has become
one of the leading figures in developing the
“Contemporary Miniature” aesthetic. Deutsche
Bank’s art programme has announced Pakistani
artist Imran Qureshi as its “Artist of the Year” for
2013.
