Title: How Did the Style & Elements of Various Film Movements Impact the Industry?
Description: For my senior portfolio, I will research deeply into different artistic film
movements throughout the 20th century and their specific artistic elements that make them
distinct from other movements. I will start with the first uses of special effects in the silent film
era with Georges Melies, moving to the artistic elements of the German expressionism
movement and other movements after World War I. I will continue to research throughout the
mid-20th century decades, learning about the different artistic movements that took form, such as
Film Noir, up until the 1960s. I will make sure to focus on the main defining elements of each
movement, including sets, scenery, costumes, special effects, color, themes, and more, and what
made each of them unique for their time. I will then focus on each of these movements’ influence
on the film industry during their respective times, finding specific examples of movies that were
influenced by certain people and were created within different film movements. After obtaining
substantial research, I will then apply the elements of my research to my own produced videos.
Throughout my senior year, I will create different video projects; in each video, I will
implements aspects of a different artistic film movement. I will make sure that the artistic
movement that I choose to influence my video will fit will with the genre of the video. For
example, I can potentially use the pessimism and menace of Film Noir into a dialogue video, or
the extravagant use of costumes and special effects of Georges Melies into a comedy or silent
film video.

Description Continued…
In January, I will present my obtained research, as well as three of my produced videos, to help
me prepare for the final presentation in April/May. All of my video projects and other works will
be uploaded to the online website that I will use for my portfolio. I will also upload my
try to capture topics and themes of different artistic movements of the 20th century. I will
complete and upload several video reflections that allow me to reflect on my work and my
portfolio “reel” that features my best work that I have completed in the two years in the ET
major. Finally, I will hopefully search for a potential job shadowing or internship opportunity
that offers different artistic topics that I am potentially interested in for college, and that helps me
Rationale for Choosing Topic: I am choosing to focus on the history and influence of 20th
century artistic movements in film to mainly increase my knowledge on the subject. I am a pretty
art-driven person, and I love to create my own art, whether it's the physical art of painting and
drawing or the artistic expression in film using different themes, editing techniques, color, and
special effects. My artistic expressive video was my favorite project during my junior year
Rationale Continued…
I think that focusing on different artistic movements throughout the 20th century will be very
important and beneficial to me, and it will allow me to immerse myself into even more unique
artistic choices and styles. It will also allow me to practice these different artistic styles of
different historical movements while allowing me to still be creative and add my own twist onto
them. Because this topic will allow me to research things that I am interested in, I will hopefully
stay motivated and dedicated throughout my senior year. Finally, I feel that practicing in artistic
expression in film will help me in the future. I’m not exactly decided on what I want to do in
college, but I have a lot of interests. I think that doing research on artistic movements in film and
practicing different types of artistic styles will help me decide if it’s something that I might want
to do in the future. I definitely want to try filmmaking in my freetime during college, so I feel
that researching and practicing the elements of this topic will help improve my work. I believe
that artistic expression in film is so important and unique, as it truly allows people to express art
through film and use the camera as their medium. Learning and practicing this throughout my
Timeline:
August: During the month of August, I will work on researching different sources related to my
topic and will develop an annotated bibliography of five of these sources. I will submit this on
the 30th.
September: During the month of September, I will start to work on video productions related to
my topic, as well as other unrelated tasks. I will submit my first script on the 6th; I will also have
my After Effects into submitted by the same day. I will continue to do research related to my
topic and will complete five more annotated bibliographies, submitting them on the 10th. Using
my annotated bib, I will start to write a rough draft of a research paper, submitting it by the 24th.
Over this time, I will also be working on my first video project, due on the 27th. Finally, I will
complete a reflection of my first project and submit it by the 30th.
October: During the month of October, I will work on revising my research paper rough draft,
and I will submit a final draft on the 4th. Then, I will work on developing my second script, and I
will submit it on the 18th. Finally, I will use the script to develop my second video project, due
on the 31st.
November: During the month of November, I will write and submit a reflection of my recently
completed video project on the 4th. After that, I will develop my third video script and submit it
by the 26th.
December: During the month of December, I will use my recently created script to develop my
third video project, and I will turn it in by the 13th. I will complete a reflection of this project by
