Brief History of NTUNHS
Originally founded in 1954 as Taiwan Provincial Junior College of Nursing, National
Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS) has undergone several
transformations in its history. In 1963, the college consolidated with Taipei Senior Vocational
School of Medicine, and was renamed Taiwan Provincial Vocational School of Nursing and
Midwifery, a five-year junior college. Reformed again from a state-run institution in 1994, the
school changed its name to National Taipei College of Nursing. This title continued until
August 2010, when the School was formally renamed National Taipei University of Nursing
and Health Sciences. In the past six decades, NTUNHS has cultivated distinguished nursing
and health care talent. In Taiwan’s educational history, NTUNHS has achieved various nursing
technological and vocational innovations that epitomize Taiwan’s nursing technological and
vocational development.

NTUNHS is renowned for its excellent healthcare reputation and top foreign/domestic
healthcare talent, the latter of which is composed of first-priority candidates recruited by
domestic and foreign academic institutions or medical treatment institutes. In 2007, the School
opened the International Nursing Master of Science Program and International Health and
Nursing Administration Undergraduate Program to develop healthcare skills of the highest
caliber. At present, NTUNHS is made up of 3 colleges including 13 departments with graduate
institutes, and 4 international programs, and The General Education Center.

2
College of Nursing
College of Nursing is comprised of three departments, two graduate institutes and two
International Master Programs, including School of Nursing, Department of Midwifery and
Women Health Care, Graduate Institute of Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine with
Western Nursing, and Graduate Institute of Health Allied Education, Department of
Gerontological Health Care. With more than 50 members of the faculty holding PhD degree,
our school is the only domestic university offering both academic and vocational nursing
training programs, and stands above others as the leading example in the field of professional
nursing.

School of Nursing (BS, MS, PhD)

School of Nursing places “humanity” as its core philosophy of nursing care. To accommodate
health care demands at every stages of the life cycle, we strive to develop novel nursing
technologies and modes of nursing care applications. To cultivate competent nursing care
personnel and advanced care professionals, we integrated the following core values into our
academic teachings: compassion, basic biomedicine, clinical nursing skills, communication,
cooperation, critical thinking, diligence, ethical and moral professionalism.

Department of Midwifery and Women Health Care (BS, MS)

The Department of Midwifery and Women Health Care provides a curriculum that emphasizes
knowledge and capabilities essential for practicing midwifery care. This curriculum is similar
to the midwifery education and training program implemented in the United States. Moreover,
it complies with Taiwan’s midwifery regulations regarding licensure examinations. This
department offers solid and complete professional training in health care, and it emphasizes
both theory and practice and the development of practical abilities. The curriculum design of
this department incorporates gender mainstreaming, with women being the core consideration.
The content of this curriculum is designed according to women’s life cycles, including
adolescence, pregnancy, adulthood, and menopause. The curriculum content is aimed at
training midwives to work in communities or in the clinical field of women’s health care.

Graduate Institute of Integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Nursing

(MS)
Our institute specializes in empirical nursing care research, and we hope to become the pioneer
in combining Traditional Chinese Medicine/complementary therapies with the field of nursing
care. In addition, we are actively building the “Center of the Integration of Traditional Chinese
Medicine with Western Nursing Evidence-Based Nursing Studies”, which is our nation’s first
evidence-based research institute with the goal of combining strategies in complementary
therapies and nursing care trainings.

Department of Health Allied Education and E-Learning (BS, MS)

3
The Department and Graduate institute of Health Allied Education are famous training
education personnel for medical institutions in Taiwan. In response to the new trend of e-
learning, NTUNHS will create the Department of Health Allied Education and E-Learning in
the academic year of 2017-2018. The courses are designated to introduce students to the use
of technology in healthcare to equip them with the ability to create health allied education
materials and to apply digital learning technologies. The Master’s Program will focus on the
critical skills fundamental of planning health allied education, pushing for E-teaching, and
promoting applications of health allied education-related studies, enabling students to become
education leaders with healthcare expertise and humanistic qualities.

International Nursing PhD Program (PhD) (English-medium Program)

In 2005, NTUNHS established a doctoral program in Nursing; this was the first doctoral
nursing program in nation provided by a technological and vocational school. In response to
students ’diversified development and career planning needs, the School of Nursing has the
best-rated PhD-level faculty in the country, and develops competency-based courses
connected to the nursing practices, as well as implement objective methods for competence
assessment. Our doctoral program aims to nurture healthcare talents in nursing leadership,
nursing education, and nursing research.

International Nursing Master of Science Program (MS) (English-medium Program)

This program was founded in 2007, and is the very first English-taught nursing master
program in Taiwan. NTUNHS nursing courses emphasize diversified development and student
career planning in order to cultivate nursing professionals according to market demand and
student abilities. College of Nursing and School of Nursing both place a strong emphasis on
“people-centered” health care. They cater to the differing health care needs of different points
in the human life cycle.

International Nurse-Midwifery Master of Science Program (MS) (English-medium

Program)
This program was founded in 2013, and is the only nurse-midwifery English master program
in Taiwan. This program aims to help students developing professional knowledge and skills
in nurse-midwifery, teaching students advanced knowledge and skills concerning midwifery,
guidance and counseling. It also emphasizes academic study and operations management to
cultivate research staffs and leaders dedicated to children and women’s health issues, enrich
clinical midwifery human resources and enhance clinical studies.

Department of Gerontological Health Care (BS)

In accordance with the university’s medium and long-term plans, the Department of
Gerontological Health Care emphasizes the provision of human-centered health care in
response to the aging society, in which the prevalence rates of dementia and disabilities are
projected to increase relative to the increase in the prevalence rates of nontransmittable
diseases among elderly people. The old-age support ratio is expected to become a main
problem concerning medical care and social welfare. Therefore, to cope with the aging trend
4
and social development demands, the department aims to train professionals in providing
health care to elderly people by developing innovative nursing technology and healthcare
models; incorporating professional knowledge and abilities as well as critical thinking into
gerontological health care; practicing caring attitudes, including ethical considerations;
demonstrating communicative and cooperative abilities; performing follow-up examinations
in providing health care to elderly people; establishing a professional identity; and instilling
the virtues of responsibility and willingness to engage in lifelong learning.
