1. The score on a (hypothetical) vocabulary test of a group 35 years old and a group of 60 years
old are shown below.
Hypothesis Testing:
Step 1:
Independent Variable- Age (35 and 60 years old)
Dependent Variable- Scores on the vocabulary test
Step 2:
Null Hypothesis – There is no significant difference between the vocabulary test score of
a group 35 years old and 60 years old.
Alternative Hypothesis- There is a significant difference between the vocabulary test
score of a group 35 years old and 60 years old.
Step 3:
N= 18
Alpha= p < .05
Step 4:
Statistical Tool: Independent T-test
Step 5:

Step 6: Interpretation
Based on the results, it state that the sig. value is 0.001 and much less than the alpha level
which is 0.05 .Therefore, because of the value, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative
hypothesis is accepted.
2. Ladies at weight watchers wish to know whether participating in weight watchers
seems to have any effect on weight change. Below are data collected from several
participants before and after attending weight watchers for a given period of time.Does
it appear that weight changes results from attending weight watchers?

Test the mean differences for significance using 0.5 level.

Weight Watcher Wbefore Wafter

Participant
Raffy I 180 158
Tulfo I 131 140
Raffy Mae 110 113
Tulfo Kurt 190 183
Grace Raffy 140 135
Kent Tulfo 128 131
Gerald Raffy T. 115 118

Hypothesis Testing:
Step 1:
Independent Variable- Weight watchers
Dependent Variable- Weight of the ladies
Step 2:
Null Hypothesis – There is no significant difference between the weight of the ladies
before and after attending weight watchers.
Alternative Hypothesis- There is a significant difference between the weight of the ladies
before and after attending weight watchers.
Step 3:
N= 14
Alpha= p < .05
Step 4:
Statistical Tool: Dependent T-test
Step 5:

Step 6: Interpretation

In the result, it stated that the sig value is .576 and much higher than the
alpha level which is 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis is accepted because of the
significance value.
3. A neuropsychologist was interested in how monkeys perform a task. The task was to
retrieve a coconut from the opposite side of a river. 15 wild monkeys were assigned to
the of the three conditions: observing a monkey, observing a human and banana reward.
After learning the monkeys were required to solve the problem again and the time taken
to solve the problem were measured.

Hypothesis Testing:
Step 1:
Independent Variable- Conditions
Dependent Variable- Time measured
Step 2:
Null Hypothesis – There is no significant difference between the time measured of the
three conditions: observing monkey, observing human and banana reward.
Alternative Hypothesis- There is a significant difference between the time measured of
the three conditions: observing monkey, observing human and banana reward.
Step 3:
N= 15
Alpha= p < .05
Step 4:
Statistical Tool: One way ANOVA
Step 5:

SIG. VALUE: .447

STEP 6: Interpretation
In the result, it stated that the sig value is .447 and much higher than the alpha level which is
0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis is accepted and the alternative hypothesis is rejected because
of the significance value.
