Is Astrology Scientific?

Astrology can be broadly divided into two parts: - Calculation part & Predictive part. Calculation Part of
Indian Vedic Astrology is absolutely Science as it is based upon Astronomical Calculations & before
discussing whether Predictive Part of Indian Vedic Astrology is Science let us discuss first whether
Medicine is Science or not. Some people call Medicine as Medical Science with out thinking whether it
fulfills the parameters of Science or not.

Is Modern Medicine a Science?

Medicine is broadly divided into following parts: -

(i) Anatomy
In which the structure of various body organs like heart, brain, kidneys, liver, lungs, pancreas etc. is
discussed.

(ii) Physiology
In which the functioning of various organs is discussed.

(iii) Pathology
In which various diseases are studied.

(iv) Practice of Medicine

In which it is discussed how various diseases would be cured.

(v) Preventive Medicine

In which some ways are discussed to take measures in advance to prevent the onset of diseases like
polio, typhoid, tetanus, measles.

(vi) Social Medicine

The study of the social, economic, environmental, cultural, psychological & genetic factors.

(vii) Surgery
In which affected organs in the body are removed, replaced or brought into right condition by operative
procedures.

(viii) Forensic Medicine

It deals with the application of medical knowledge to aid in the administration of justice or it deals with
the medical aspects of law for example in the cases of injuries, hanging, sexual offences, infant deaths
& poisoning etc.
(ix) Medical Jurisprudence
It deals with the legal responsibilities of the physician with particular reference to those arising from
the physician-patient relationship, such as medical negligence cases, consent rights and duties of
doctors, serious professional misconduct, medical ethics etc. In short it deals with the legal aspects of
medicine.

Practice of Medicine does not fulfills the parameters of Science

In all of the above mentioned parts Practice of Medicine does not fulfills the parameters of Science
because no doctor can give written guarantee or money back guarantee that he can treat any of his
patients with a specific illness. Also if a patient with some specific illness goes to different doctors for
consultation then generally views of different doctors is different as well as their treatments are also
different even if all the doctors are practicing same system of Medicine either: - Allopathy, Ayurveda,
Homoeopathy, Unani or Sidhdha. Sometimes when a patient goes to a physician to get cured some
specific illness then it has been observed that nothing comes out of the medical tests conducted on the
patient or nothing comes out of the diagnosis of the patient with latest machines, whereas the patient
is crying in pain due to his illness.

If hundred patients visit some particular doctor then that doctor can not treat all of his patients.
Different patients have different views regarding some particular doctor based upon their experiences.
Also a doctor can himself fall ill due to some particular disease. A heart surgeon can himself become a
heart patient & may not necessarily treat himself. Also some times a patient dies due to the sheer
negligence of a doctor. But it doesn't mean that the doctor will stop practicing medicine.

Similarly if we take into consideration the field of Law then any Lawyer can not necessarily win all of
the cases he fights or if he fights a case for himself than he may not necessarily win. But it doesn't
mean that the Lawyer will stop practicing.

People involved in same sort of profession have different success rates. Like some physician may be
more successful some other physician may be less successful. Similarly some advocate may be winning
8 out of 10 cases he fights but some other may be winning only 5 out of 10 cases. Similarly any
teacher who is teaching a class of 50 students can not guarantee that each & every student of his/her
will be able to secure more than 80% marks in some examination. some students may secure more
than 90% marks but some other may fail to secure more than 35% marks.

Sachin Tendulkar is a great batsman in the sport of cricket but he can not guarantee that he will make
more than 100 runs in each and every match he plays. In some matches he is declared to be out at
zero runs. But it never means that he'll stop playing cricket. Similarly Amitabh Bachchan is a great film
star in Indian film industry but many times the films in which he has acted goes flop. But it never
means that he'll stop acting in movies.

It only means that in each and every profession of the world there is a different success rate of
different individuals. Nobody can give 100% success rate. Same is the case with the profession of
Astrology. Some astrologer may be more successful but some other astrologer may be less successful.

Predictive Indian Vedic Astrology

The Predictive Indian Vedic Astrology is based upon some logics given by the sage Parashara. It is not
a Science but there lies some strength or truth in it due to which it is still present in this world. The
success of an Indian Vedic Astrologer depends upon how much correct he can tell about an unknown
person or his life or how many of his clients get satisfied by his predictions. No Astrologer is 100%
correct. Renowned Astrologer Bejan Daruwalla (or Bejan Daruvalla) has also admitted it many times.
Many times the prediction of a Jyotishi on some client goes wrong because the client do not provide
correct birth details. Many clients give estimated birth details & moreover with a lot of confidence.
Some clients do not want to bother to enquire their correct birth details from their elders as they do not
realize the importance of correct birth details in Jyotisha.

An Indian Vedic Astrologer can himself suffer in life due to his own bad luck or a bad phase of time.

The job of an Indian Vedic Astrologer is not to bluff his clients by claiming that he can change their
destiny by prescribing some so called remedies (like stones, mantras, tantras, yantras, yagna, havan,
poojas, homams or daans) but only to tell something about their destiny & to alert them of some
coming good or bad phase of time in their lives so that his clients can prepare themselves in advance
(if situation seems to be avoidable or if its bad effect can be minimized) according to the practical ways
as suggested by the Indian Vedic Astrologer. Though altering one's destiny is not that easy & it can not
be done with out the bounty of God.

If there was so strength in the so called remdies of the so called astrologers then BJP minister Shri Lal
Krishna Advani would have become the Prime Minister of India & Atal Bihari Bajpai wouldn't have spent
all his life as a bachelor. Manmohan Singh never wanted to become the Prime Minister of India but he
became the Prime Minister of India consecutively for the second time without consulting any astrologer
for remedies. Remedies couldn't save film star Sunjay Dutt to suffer in his life from various problems
like: - he lost his mother at an early age & then suffered from various health issues due to drug
addiction, his earlier two marriages were unsuccessful because one of his ex-wife died & from other he
got divorced. Then he also spent a lot of time in jail & had to face trials in court.

So if astrologers couldn't save these prominent figures then how can any astrologer claim to alter the
destiny of ordinary people by costly remedies?

Is it essential to prove Astrology a Science?

Absolutely not! If scientists are unable to prove the existence of God then it never mean that people
will stop visiting temples, mosques, gurudwaras, churchs or other places of worship of God. Everything
in this universe can't be percieved by our five senses and can't be understood by our mind. We can't
understand the exact working of Astrology. Its just like no one knows the working of Homoeopathic
Medicines but they are found to be effective in many cases.

Various issues regarding a person's life like profession (job / business), education, marriage, married
life, child birth, property, foreign tour, health, disputes, financial condition can be ascertained /
estimated by calculating planetary positions at the time of his birth by some astronomical equations.
We need birth details (Date of Birth, Month of Birth, Year of Birth, Time of Birth & Place of birth) of the
person concerned for calculating planetary positions at the time of his birth.

Misconception regarding Astrology

Some people have a misconception regarding Jyotish that it is the rays emanating from the planets that
affect our lives or have some concern with our destiny but that is a myth. Rays can only produce some
physical effect. Just like Sun rays produce heat & give away light. Similarly rays emanating from Moon
on a Full-Moon day are responsible for producing tides in the sea. They have no concern with our
destiny.

It is not the rays but the planetary positions at the time of a birth of a person as seen from his birth
place which have some correlation with the person's personality as well as his destiny regarding various
issues of his/her life. The theory given by some so called astrologers that if we wear gemstones related
to some planets then the rays coming from those planets will penetrate those gemstones and will enter
our skin and will alter our destiny is not correct. It has been observed that gemstones produce some
effects on the state of mind or in some cases state of health of a person.

Concept of Relative Motion in Indian

In Indian Vedic Astrology we have to work according to the concept of relative motion & Earth is
assumed to be stationary. While Sun & Moon are considered to be planets. Also two imaginary planets
'Rahu' (Dragon's Head) & 'Ketu' (Dragon's Tail) are taken into consideration. These two imaginary
planets are actually two points on which the Moon's orbit & Earth's Equator (extended into the space)
intersects. Other planets are Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn
(Shani). Newly discovered planets like Uranus, Neptune, Pluto etc. are not taken into consideration.

Check the accuracy of birth details: -

To interpret a kundli or horoscope first of all check whether inputs (date, month, year, time & place of
birth) supplied by the client are correct or not. We should ask the client where the person concerned
was born (it means either in some hospital or at home & if at home then which people recorded his/her
birth details. It is very essential because if wrong birth details are entered in calculations then wrong
birth charts & wrong vedic horoscopes will be generated which will result in wrong interpretations &

Check the power of planets: -

After generating janma kundli & janma patri, check degrees of ascendant or lagna as well as planets.
Planets or Grihas having 0 or 29 degrees will be considered to be on the boundary of two zodiac signs
getting reduced in power. If ascendant or lagan is on 0 or 29 degrees then it'll have to be determined
by checking characteristics of the person concerned which zodiac sign will serve as ascendant. Also in
such a case time of birth as well as place of birth will have to be recorded more precisely.

Now check the power of Moon (phase of Moon) in the lagna kundli by checking how many houses apart
it is present from the Sun. If it is present more than 4 houses apart from Sun then it'll be considered to
be in good power. If it is present 4 houses apart from Sun then it'll be considered as of average power.
if it is present less than 4 houses apart from Sun then it'll be considered as of less power. Here the
point to be noted down is Moon can't go more than 7 houses apart from the Sun. If it is 7 houses apart
from the Sun it'll be 'Full Moon' (nearly 100% in phase). If it is 4 houses apart then it'll be nearly 50%
in phase. If it is only one house apart then it'll be nearly 0% in phase.

Now check which planets are present retrograde or 'vakriya' & combust or 'aast' in the indian birth
chart. Mercury if combust will not be taken seriously because its closest to the Sun & is often present
combust.

Check which planets are present in their own zodiac sign in the natal chart, which planets are present
uchcha (exalted), which planets are present neecha (debilitated), which planets are present in the sign
of friend planets & which on the sign of enemy planets.
Now check which planets are 'Dikbali' (hold power due to their presence in particular direction) in
janma patri. Jupiter & Mercury are 'Dikbali' in 1st house, Surya & Mars 'Dikbali' in 10th house, Moon &
Venus 'Dikbali' in 4th house & Saturn is considered 'Dikbali' in 7th house. But while analyzing Saturn as
'Dikabali' don't forget that 7th house is the house of marriage, married life, love life & is quite sensitive.
Saturn may even harm 7th house inspite of being 'Dikbali'.

Now calculate what would be the age of the person concerned at present (which means at the time of
analyzing horoscope). Pay attention to the Mahadashas & Antardashas of planets. As far as
understanding of Mahadashas & Antardashas is concerned then it is mainly learned through experience
as we deal with more and more clients. In the beginning of our career as an astrologer we should work
for free for about one or two years so that more and more people come to us and which also helps us
in attaining some publicity. Our knowledge increases as we deal with more and more clients because
while dealing with clients they narrate what incidents happened in some specific time intervals in the
past tense of their lives which help us to correlate those events with dashas going on in their lives in
those time intervals. We also pay attention to the position or condition of the planets of antardashas &
mahadashas in their charts.

Now check which planets have exchanged zodiac signs in the lagan or janam kundali, which planets are
present collectively in a house, which planets are watching other planets & which planets are watching
each other. Check for presence of any 'Rajyog' in the birth chart.

Best way to learn Astrology is to collect birth details of various persons around us (like our family
members, relatives, friends, neighbours, colleagues or any other people we meet in our daily lives) &
generate their horoscopes using any good Astrology software & prepare their horoscopes on paper for
which we should keep a long register with us. We should try to analyze their horoscopes & also pay

as planets. Constellations are clusters of stars. Stars continue to blink whereas glow of planets is always the same.
Stars illuminate with there own light whereas planets illuminate by the light of Sun.

In Indian Vedic Astrology importance has been given to 9 planets: - Sun or Surya, Moon or Chandra, Mars or
Mangal, Mercury or Budh, Jupiter or Guru, venus or Shukra, Saturn or Shani, Dragon's head or Rahu & Dragon's
Tail or Ketu.

What are Rahu & Ketu?

In Indian Vedic Astrology Rahu & Ketu have been considered as planets but they don't have any physical existence
in actual. They are imaginary planets which are considered as always retrograde & always combust. Moon revolves
around the Earth & Earth along with Moon revolves around Sun. Moon while revolving around Earth intersects the
Earth's circumference on two points. It means the orbit of Earth & Moon interects each other on two points in which
one is called Rahu which is seen to be going from bottom to top & the other point which is just opposite to Rahu is
called as Ketu. Rahu is called as 'Ascending Node' & ketu is called as 'Descending Node'.
Orbit of Earth is actually orbit of Sun (from the point of view of relative motion) which is also called as Ecliptic.
Moon while revolving around Sun intersects ecliptic at two points making an angle of 5°. This is termed as Celestial
Latitude.

There is a famous story in Indian Mythology about Rahu & Ketu. While the churning of Sea a demon secretively
drank elixir & became immortal. Indra got angry by this & separated the head of the demon from his body by
cutting it. But the demon didn't die because he became immortal by drinking elixir. Head of the demon was termed
as Rahu & body of the demon was termed as Ketu. These Rahu & Ketu are always running after Surya (Sun) &
Chandra (Moon) & many times eclipse them because Surya & Chandra revealed about the drinking of elixir by the
demon to Indra.

Retrograde Planets or Vakriya Grahas

Planets which seem to be moving in the opposite direction of their movement (when seen from Earth)
in their respective orbits are termed as retrograde planets in Astrology or Vakriya (or Vakri) grahas in
Jyotisha. In actual no planet moves in the opposite direction but since the Earth is also revolving
around the Sun, due to which according to the concept of relative motion many times it seems that the
planet is moving in opposite direction.

Note: - (i) Sun & Moon can never be retrograde.

(ii) Rahu & Ketu are always retrograde.
(iii) Planets which are not 'Vakriya' or 'Vakri' are termed as 'Maargi'.

Combust Planets in Vedic Astrology

Planets which lose some of their power due to their presence in close proximity of Sun are termed as
combust planets in Vedic Astrology or 'Aast Grahas' in Jyotish. Planets which not combust are not 'Aast' are
termed as 'Udit Grahas'.

(i) Sun or Surya can never be combust or 'Aast'.

(ii) Rahu & Ketu are always considered to be combust or 'Aast' not because they are always close to Sun but
because they don't have any physical existence.
