10 Conceptions of teaching

1. I belief that teaching is a learning process.

I put myself as an inexperienced teacher due to my not so long period of

teaching. Therefore, every step that I have taken has been a good
learning time so far. I always remind myself that everything happens for a
reason and each mistakes or errors will be taken as lesson to improve
myself. Thus that is why teaching has brought a big impact in my life and
everyone in school is my teacher.

2. I belief that teachers should go to class prepared.

Of course there are times when a teacher failed to achieve the objectives
of a lesson. One of the reasons is because of lack of preparation. I myself
have come to a point where I was too occupied with other works and I
planned my lesson in the last minute. So in the end, I came to class
unprepared and failed to deliver the content effectively. That is why, I
belief that preparation and good planning is very much part of a confident
teaching.

3. I belief that English language teacher should speak good English.

We all know that students look up to their teacher as a role model and
they tend to imitate the way a teacher talks. A teacher must be able to
teach using good English and also encourage students to converse by
using the language too. Learners of English as second language have a
perception that learning English is difficult and due to that they lack
confidence to talk in English. So in order to create interest to use English is
by modelling good English.

4. I belief that teaching a small group of students is much more effective.

In my opinion, conducting a small classroom is much more effective than a

mass lecture. This is because; a teacher will be able to closely monitor his
or her students in terms of behaviour and learning styles. I have
conducted a mass lecture and also a small group of people. From my

experience, it was hard for me to identify weak students when it was a

mass group of students in the class. But when I taught a much smaller
group of students, I could spot weak students and then I can focus on
them and at the same time not neglecting the better students.

5. I belief that students should mind their language in the class.

During class, whenever I heard a student says to his or her friend words
like, “Kurang ajar kau” or calling names such as, “Gemok”, I would say in
a firm tone, “Please mind your language!” As a teacher, I feel very sad
when students talks that way with their friends. They are my students and
I want them to be sensitive of people’s feeling and somehow I think our
students behaviour also reflect the teacher too. I definitely do not want to
be looked as an “ill-behaved” person.

6. I belief that teachers should always find ways to make a class interesting.

We all know that teaching a language especially English language is not

an easy task. So, teachers should put extra effort to come out with
interesting ways of teaching and learning environment to arouse interest
among the students to learn the language. For instance, maybe teacher
can do outdoor language games that require students to participate
actively. That way, sooner or later they will learn to get over their negative
perception towards English language.

7. I belief that students must apply what they have learnt in daily life.

This is related to part of our country’s Education Philosophy, which is life-

long learning. It is important for students to apply knowledge that they
have acquired in their daily routine because it will reflect their
understanding towards the lessons learnt. For example, student who
wants to write a formal letter to their teacher may do it according the
format taught to them. Thus the letter written is in a correct organization
and using the right format.

8. I belief that teachers should not be moody.

In my opinion, teachers should not let themselves be affected by problems

outside the school. Normally, when someone is burden by problems he or
she can be moody or in other word, emotional. This will lead to
unnecessary scolding in class and it may also lead to irrational decision.
Behaviour like this can affect the way the students look at their teacher.

9. I belief that students should respect teachers and vice versa.

We all want to be respected and I think this is a part of everyone’s life

goals. In addition, Respect is one of the important values that should be
instilled in each student’s self. In order to do that teacher must remind
them if the student behaves badly. For example, if a student talks rudely,
the teacher must immediately say something to the student and
rationalized his or her reasons.

10.I belief that students should take note in class.

Note-taking is an essential skill because it keeps students alert of what a

teacher is teaching. Sometimes, a good way to teach students to be
independent is by not giving notes to them. This means that they will have
to pay attention to the lecture in order to grasp the lesson. For instance,
lots of times a teacher will comment on the importance of information and
infer that it will appear in upcoming test. Clearly, it is a student’s job to jot
down the necessary information for his or her own good.
