Deciphering the classic Jyotish texts is one

of my favorite things to do. Taking shloka
(or sutra) by shloka, translating it to English,
to the best of my ability (I am by no means
a Sanskrit scholar!), and then understand-

Bhrigu Sutra, by Sage Bhrigu, is an example
of how it can be done by you, as a learning
technique and as a method to improve your
Jyotish knowledge.

My name is Branka Larsen and that’s me,
some years ago :-), above.
I am a Vedic Astrologer and Jyotish is my
passion for over 18 years now. I was fortunate
enough to initiate my learning in one of the
longest Jyotisha traditions in the World – the
Sri Acyutananda Dasa Parampara, stem-
ming from Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Sri
Acyutananda was the head astrologer and he
taught 12 students the Jyotish Vidya. Some-
where down the line this knowledge was giv-
en to my Jyotish Guru Pt. Sanjay Rath and
later on to little old me.
Learning from the Tradition is of immea-

PLANETS IN
THE
ASCENDANT
INTRODUCTION

Sage Bhrigu is said to be the first propounder
of astrology. The legend goes that the Sage
foresaw his descendants’ inability to provide
a living for themselves. He then compiled a
Samhita of several horoscopes, with their ac-
companying predictions, to ensure the liveli-
hood of his descendants and all propounders
of Vedic knowledge.
However, the Bhrigu Samhita is not solely a
collection of horoscopes and predictions, but
also a compendium of principles to approach
and predict the events of a birth chart. This
includes the results of the various Lagna or
Ascendants, the placements of planets in
houses and signs, the strengths of planets,
the divisional charts placements and other
aspects of astrological lore.
The work of this scribe seeks to elaborate on
one small section of the Samhita, namely the
results of planets in Lagna/Ascendant.
This E-book consists of original Sanskrit
sutras translated into English, with a detailed
commentary on the first sutra, as a guideline
for the study of subsequent ones.

Translation: When Sun is placed in the first house or ascendant

In case the Sun is placed in its own or exaltation sign, he will be

Brighu rishi is starting this brilliant work with
Sun’s placement in lagna (Ascendant) and with
that, the first sutra is ārogyaṁ bhavati or one
who is without the disease, healthy. Sun is the
karaka (significator) for the first house, being
the life-giver planet in the Universe, and as
such is very much prone to protect the health
and life of a person. Ascendant is the birth of
the new life, it is defined as the rising sign at
the time of the birth and is a crucial point in de-
termining the health and longevity of a native
(including 8th and 10th house as well).
pittaprakṛtiḥ netrarogī The Sun is agni tatva
planet, full of light and fire, and as such it will
give strong pitta dosha (pittaprakṛtiḥ) as per
Ayurveda or one who has a strong digestive
fire and a digestive fire is said to be the main
factor in good health. But agni tatva has its
burning qualities as well (story of two wives).
That is why it is said that the strong presence
of Sun on the ascendant can give receding hair
and one who wears eyeglasses, both attributed
to the disbalance of pitta in the body. Acidic
stomach comes due to the strong pitta in the
body as well. Depending on the other influenc-
es on the Sun this results may vary.

medhāvī sadācārī vā uṣnodaravān Person with
the Sun on the ascendant will be intelligent and
of good conduct. Sun is the satva guna planet
(next to Moon and Jupiter) or planet with good
qualities. He is also dharma karaka and as such
gives good conduct and moral standing. The
person is duty-bound and follows the dharma.
On the other hand, Sun is the lord of the fifth
house in the natural zodiac or Kal Purusha. 5th
house is the house of intelligence and Sun on
the ascendant brings those qualities to the na-
tive. This is also the reason why Brighu rishi is
talking about children, intelligence and stom-
ach in connection to the Sun on the Lagna.
Brighu Rishi is very clear in stating that the
strength and beneficence of the Sun will have
a say in tilting those results towards auspicious
or inauspicious, hence exalted Sun on the as-
cendant can give fame. Exalted graha is akin to
Vishnu amsha or the highest state which means
that this is not an ordinary planet on the ascen-
dant but it becomes Rama (the avatar) or Agni
(tatva level) in case Sun is in its own sign and
should be worshiped accordingly.

Translation: If the Moon is in the first house,
the native will be handsome looking but un-
steady mentally (or have type of shaking disor-
der) and will be happy at watery places. He will
be traveling a lot in his 15th year.
If the Moon in the Ascendant is in the Ari-
es, Taurus or Cancer, the native will be well
versed in shastras (sacred scriptures). He will
be wealthy, happy, have royal comfort and be
soft-spoken. He will have soft limbs and strong
built (robust) but will not be intelligent.
Is the Moon is aspected by benefics, the native
will be powerful, wise, intelligent, healthy, be
clever conversationalist and wealthy.
If the lord of Ascendant is weak, the native
will be sickly. If he is aspected by a benefic the
health will be good.

Translation: If Mars is in the Ascendant the native will have
wound marks (sore, blemish, boil) over his body. He will
have a strong body, will have stealing habits, big navel, and
reddish hands.
He will be very strong and powerful, foolish, angry, extraor-
dinary heroic, wealthy and unsteady. He will suffer from pe-
culiar diseases and will be of wicked disposition.
If Mars is exalted (in Capricorn) or in his own sign (Aries or
Scorpio) the native will be healthy, will have a strong body
and will get honors from Government enhancing his repu-
tation. He will also be long-lived. If Mars is conjoined with
a malefic or inimical planet, the native will be short-lived,
will have few children, and will suffer diseases and pains on
account of vatta related diseases (such as rheumatism, gout,
etc.).
If Mars is exalted (in Capricorn) on the Ascendant person
will be wealthy, he will be learned and will enjoy sightseeing.
If Mars is conjoined or aspected by a malefic or placed in a
malefic sign, the native will suffer from eye diseases.
