LEARNNG OBJECTIVES OF MIDWIFERY POSTING

Course Description:

This course is designed for students to appreciate the concepts and principles of midwifery
and obstetrical nursing. It helps them to acquire knowledge and skills in rendering nursing
care to normal and high risk pregnant woman during antenatal, natal and post natal periods in
hospitals and community settings. It also helps to develop skills in managing normal and high
risk neonates and participate in family welfare programme.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:-

 An understanding the role of the midwife in normal midwifery with in a


multidisciplinary team
 An insight into the provision of holistic care to the mother, child, and family
throughout pregnancy, labour, and the puerperium
 An understating of the legal requirements necessary to maintain confidentiality and
accurate records through out the period of contact with the mother baby and family.
 An understanding of the personal, social , cultural, psychological and economy
implications pregnancy and parenthood present of the child bearing women and her
family.
 Appreciate the need for continued support
 Appreciate the commonality between the midwife and children nurses and how their
roles may meet from time to time

ANTENATAL OBJECTIVES:-

 Visit to an antenatal clinic/initial assessment


 Admission of a women to the antenatal ward for induction of labour
 Care of the women admitted for the monitoring of fetal and maternal well being
/pregnancy risk clinic
 Visit to the ultrasound scan department for observation of n abdominal ultrasound
scan to be arranged by individual
 Observation of individual or group parenthood education class

LABOUR ROOM OBJECTIVES:-

 Admission of the mother in labour


 Care of the mother and fetus during labour together with support for the birthing
partner.
 Monitoring of the maternal and fetal wellbeing
 Observation of a normal delivery, instrumental delivery and caesarean section
 Immediate care of the mother and baby following delivery
 Examination of the newborn
 Observation of mother and baby
 Transfer of mother and baby to the postnatal ward
POSTNATAL OBJECTIVES:-

 Reception of the newly deliver mother and baby to the postnatal ward
 Individualised daily postnatal care of the mother and baby.
 Initiation of infant feeding
 Link with lactation consultant
 Attend breastfeeding clinic
 Baby screening/ immunization
 Discharge planning/
