 Background
The Separation process is a process to separate an element in a solution/ mixture.
One example of the separation process is precipitation reaction this reaction will produce
sediment that has a different type depending on the solution that we use. Sediment is a
solid that insoluble that separated from the solution, in which cation and anion in aqueous
solution combine to form natural insoluble solid.
In this experiment we want to know what will happen if we do separation reaction
in metal element and how if we add some acid to the solution also how many sediments
will form.

 APPARATUS AND REAGENTS

Apparatus :
1. Beakers Glass
2. Pipette
3. Ring Stand
4. Balances
5. Bunsen Burner
6. Triangle Stand
7. Asbes Gauze
8. Stirring Rot
9. Lighter
10. Gloves
Reagents :
1. CuSO4
2. NaOH
3. FeSO4
4. Distilled Water

 Procedures
1. Prepare all the apparatus and solution that we need.
2. Take 50 ml of CuSO4 in beaker glass.
 At another experiment add 10 drops H2SO4 in CuSO4 before burning it to
prevent hydrolysis reaction.
3. Put it above asbes gauze and triangle stand and burn it till boiling.
4. After CuSO4 boil, add NaOH slowly while stirring the solution with stirring rot.
5. While adding NaOH slowly we can know how much we need the NaOH from the
precipitate formed.
6. Do the same steps for FeSO4, but in FeSO4 solution, adding NaOH is to preventing
oxidation reaction in the solution.

 Calculation
1. 𝐶𝑢𝑆𝑂4 + 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 → 𝐶𝑢(𝑂𝐻)2 + 𝑁𝑎𝑆𝑂4
𝑀𝑅 𝐶𝑢𝑆𝑂4 = 97.5
1 0.1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 1𝐿
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑢(𝑂𝐻)2 = × × × 50 𝑚𝑙 × 97.5
1 𝐿 1000 𝑚𝑙
= 0,4875 𝑔𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐶𝑢(𝑂𝐻)2

2. 𝐹𝑒𝑆𝑂4 + 𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻 → 𝐹𝑒(𝑂𝐻)2 + 𝑁𝑎2𝑆𝑂4

𝑀𝑅 𝐹𝑒𝑆𝑂4 = 89.8
1 0.1 𝑚𝑜𝑙 1𝐿
𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐹𝑒(𝑂𝐻)2 = × × × 50 𝑚𝑙 × 89.8
1 𝐿 1000 𝑚𝑙
= 0.449 𝑔𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐹𝑒(𝑂𝐻)2

 Discussion
The first experiment that we’ve done is precipitate CuSO4 + H2SO4 without adding
NaOH first before burning it, we use 50 ml of CuSO4 with 0,1 M concentration and use the
0,02 M of H2SO4 as the reaction but after we add a quite much of H2SO4 with 0,02 M
concentration, the sediment take a long time to form and the sediment is not significantly
formed. Because that reason we change the concentration of NaOH become 1M
concentration of NaOH and the sediment start formed fast, and have a moss green
approaching black color with a send form of sediment.
The second experiment is 50 ml of CuSO4 + H2SO4 with adding NaOH before
burning it. In this second experiment, we used 1 M concentration of H2SO4 because we
know from the first experiment that 0,02 M of H2SO4 is too runny to react with CuSO4 and
form a sediment. The function of adding NaOH before burning it is to prevent hydrolysis
reaction in this experiment and because of adding NaOH, the color of water above sediment
become more clear.
The third and last experiment we did is FeSO4 0,1 M concentration precipitation
reaction. We did this experience for being a comparison experiment with the first and
second experiment. We do the same treatment with the last experiment, we burn the first
FeSO4 solution without adding NaOH and the second solution with adding NaOH to
preventing oxidation reaction in this experiment. The first solution after adding H2SO4 in
the first instance the solution color become bright orange but after we add more NaOH
solution the color slowly become moss green with a little bit of orange color in above the
water. The second solution experiment we have a little bit problem because the color
transform become dark color too, not red like what we expect. At first, we try to add more
distilled water to the solution, think the color will be different but not. At the and of the
experiment we got a quite much sediment than the first solution and the color of water
above the sediment is more clear than the first solution.

 Conclusion
From this experiment we know that to separates the solution or element in a solution
we can use precipitation reaction and this reaction (precipitation reaction) will produce a
various type of sediment and color, like in this experiment we got sand and jam sediment,
it’s all depend on the type of solution that we used.
