THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

“According to an American author, Ryan Holiday “Writing the perfect paper is a

lot like a military operation. It takes discipline, foresight, research, strategy, and, if done

right, ends in total victory”.

In the Philippines, Filipino students of senior high school find it alarming that

when conducting a research writing the students struggles to focus on the other subject.

In San Jose National High School-Senior High School has the same problem. The

students of San Jose Senior High School can’t focus to the other subject, the reason for

this is, because of research writing affects their performance in the other subject.

Based on the research of Kakoli Majumber (2016) , she found that, the field of

research requires persistence and most researchers devotes many sleepless night towards

conducting a research. Writing the research paper is not as overwhelming as some may

initially think. The research paper essentially is a search on work that has previously been

studied by usually an expert in the field. The only task that is required of you is to

unearth their work. Even though this task may seem simple, many students encounter

problems organizing and writing the research paper because they fail to research the

general topic before they decide on a thesis statement; they fail to provide an appropriate

thesis statement; they fail to provide a connection between the thesis statement and all of
the topic sentences in the paper; they fail to support the paper with adequate information

that is relevant only to the topic of the paper; or they fail to correctly cite their sources.

Research writing takes so much time to get own information and put together. All

of the time, will be spent to finish a research. It’s difficult to wrap all of the things to find

a solution to its problem. The most difficult part of the research writing is the actual topic

itself. But despite all of that, students are required to submit a research paper at the end of

their academic semester.

Research writing attempts to test a student’s understanding of an academic course

from all its angles. You can say that a research paper is the final test of the students

learning over the course of their academic year. Many students often overlook the

importance of writing a research paper. They take it a burden and tiresome talk and don’t

give their 100%, because they end up just focusing on the research itself that the students

forgot to focus on the other subjects and its affects their performance.

This could help the student to overcome those struggles in conducting a research

writing and to avoid affecting your performance on the other subject. First it might be

that all your tasks are so piled up, can’t focus on the other subject, and do what you might

do first. The Senior High School students experience the same problem. All the projects

ended up to be at the same deadline as the others. Instead, the students do the easiest task

first, they pick what is the hardest. The reason is to finish it quickly. But all subjects

deserve to focus on especially when the projects, tasks, assignments, research writing and

more end in the same deadline. To avoid the panic and struggles list all the tasks and

divide or rather organize your time to finish it even little by little until the deadline

comes. In this way it doesn’t affect any performance on the other subject.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that affecting the

students performance because of doing a research. To achieve this objective, all ABM

graduate students from SJNHS-SHS, during the academic year 2017-2018 were

explained. The researchers will undergo to survey to know if research though was the

reason why their performance on the other subject was affected back then.

Background of the Study

According to Mohammad Ali Jinnah University Islamabad , Pakistan ,many

practical studies are carried out to investigate factors affecting students performance .The

focus of this research is that students performance in intermediate examination is linked

with students' outline consisted of his approach towards communication, learning

facilities, proper guidance and family stress .The research is based on students profile

developed on the basis of information and data collected through assessment from

students

One of the problem about research that students from SJNHS-SHS facing was the

all out activities that mostly difficult to do and it will be stressful to also do research

while having an activities in different subjects. One More thing was the projects that have

to pass in the sometime and day that were having a research.

Research into factors affecting the academic performance of students who dropout

concentrates strongly on two areas. On the other hand, there have been studies that look

at the academic performance of students in relation to variables such as gender,

personality characteristics, finances, etc. (Woodley 2003).

Instead of summarizing findings of the studies based on isolated variables only, other

researchers have conceptualized these factors in the form of theories.

acquisition of new abilities. Incremental theorist attribute poor performances to lack of

effort, raher than ability, and respond to poor performance with intentional remediation

actions (Hong et al., 1999).

It appears from the above information that factors affecting the academic

performance of students are complex, multi-dimensional. The other common beliefs of

these theorists are that peer support, academic performance, the student’s level of

satisfaction with the institution and commitment of both students and the institution

might play a role in retention. Common features in work theories are related to the

student’s senior high school experience adjustment and attitude.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “Perceived Effects of Research to the Performance of Students

in San Pablo SJSHS-SJNHS” this aims to find out if conducting a research is really

affecting the academic performance of the senior high school students, and how to

overcome those struggles.

This study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the advantages of making research?

2. How do you manage your time equally with the other tasks ?

3. Is there a benefits of making a research?

4. How can you overcome the struggles when conducting a research writing?

5. Do you think that making a research paper really affects your performance in the

other subjects? Why?

Significance of the Study

This research served as a bridge to the benefactors of the study. Specifically,

this is significant to the following:

Students. Since ABM students are experiencing the research work, this study will be

easy to them on how to manage in the future.

Upcoming senior high students. This study can be their guide on how to handle in doing

research paper when they have those requirements.

Teachers. They can get some information in this study because of the effects of research

work to the performance of senior high graduate in San Jose National High School.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is a qualitative analysis focusing on the effects of research to the

performance on the other subject. It was conducted on the school of SJNHS-SHS with the

chosen participants to give information and the reason if the research was affecting the

performance on the other subject. In addition researchers pursue this study because

nowadays students got a low performance and other was afraid to make a research paper.

This study was conducted on the ABM students, upcoming ABM students

and the teachers. The purpose of this study is to inform the ABM students why were

conducting research, the teachers to inform them that it might affect the performance of

students because of research. The researchers used 40 Senior High Graduates if SJNHS.
This study is mainly focused on the affected performance on the other

subjects because of research and identifying the causes that led them to have a poor

performance.

Definition of Terms

For the purpose of classification, the following terms were defined in

accordance with their generally meaning. (and how they are used in the study.)

Research. It is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in

order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.

Documentation. The act of giving credit to a source a student uses in a research paper.

Paraphrasing. Taking the quote of someone else and putting it in your own words.

Senior High School Graduate. Students who finish a secondary school typically

comprising the three highest grades.

Academic Performance. Academic performance describes how well you perform in

school courses like social studies, history, English /ELA, sciences and math’s, but can

also include the “specials” or elective courses. Academic performance can also describes

as the measure of how well you do in an educational setting. Your report card, for

example, is an indication of your academic performance in school.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literatures and studies that are related to the

study of the researchers. This is to provide more clarity about the research .This will help

the researchers, the upcoming Grade-11 students specially ABM and also the teachers to

better understand if the real reason of affecting the appearance on the other subject is

conducting a research paper.

Related Literature

Academic Performance

Singhalaukh (2009) found that motivation has positive relationship with school

performance and achievement. High and low achievement motivated students differ

significantly on achievement score Rajeev, (2002).

Cothran and Ennis(2000) found that students were motivated by teacher s who cared

about student learning and showed enthuasm. This teachers introduced topics in an

interesting strategies and promoted students involvement by allowing participation in the

selection learning activities.

Leandro and Palechano (2004) studied the wisdom and achievement motivation

factors have correlation with academic performance and the motivational factors are

more relevant to academic qualification than contemporary wisdom. Academic

achievement is accomplished by the actual execution of class work in the school setting.
Kwesiga (2002) also observed that the learning outcomes and educational

performance of student are strongly affected by the type of educational institution where

they received their education. However this is a function of the number of facilities a

school offers which usually determines their quality, and which in turn affects the

performance and accomplished of its students.

De Smedt et al. (2003) investigated pre-academic and early academic achievement in

children with velocardiofacial syndrome of borderline or normal intelligence. In the

sample 13 children from the primary schools in Flanders in Belgium was selected and

tested on reading, spelling and mathematics. The results indicated no significant different

in academic achievement of boys and girls.

Documentation

According to Adrienne Escoe (2001) "Documentation has many meanings, from

the broad—anything written in any medium—to the narrow—policies and procedures

manuals or perhaps records." Base on Kristin R. Woolever (1991) "An issue more

important than documentation form is knowing when to document. In brief, anything that

is copied needs to be documented. Perhaps the best tip for knowing when to document is

to use common sense. If writers are careful to give credit where it is due and to provide

the reader with easy access to all the source material, the text is probably documented

appropriately."
Related Studies

Kochlar (2000) says proper guidance is necessary to help the students with proper

like lack of correlation between talent and achievement. Many students always focus on

what the education can do to their lives they goal is to study and finish it but the problem

is their have no relation to other, so that they have lack of confidence and comfortably to

enjoy their study, proper guidance or counseling of others is important because it is the

connection of other to individual. The important of it is, first students and teachers have a

better relationship to others, second the students apply it in outside of school and apply it

in their family so that the students and parents have strong relationship.

Raychaudun et al. (2010) examined that various studies have been concluded to

recognize those variables which are influencing academic performance of the students.

The academic performance of the students also rely on the participation in the class,

family pay, and teacher student ratio. Connection on the affected performance because of

research is the financial problem, because of the lack of money and technology, the result

was more expenses and most of their time was on focusing on research and that’s the

reason why the other subject was affected.

Cherian (2007) investigated the relationship between parental education and

academic achievement of 369 boys and 652 girls whose ages ranged from 13 to 17 years

of Transkei in South Africa. The marks obtained by the pupils in the class were

aggregated as the criterion measure of academic achievement of the students. Findings

revealed significant effect of parental education on academic achievement of their

children. Vijayalakshmi and Natesen (2006) studied factors influencing academic

achievement on a sample of 100 students consisting of 50 boys and 50 girls studying in

ninth standard of Coimbatore. The total marks obtained by the students in quarterly and

half yearly examination were taken as academic achievement. Findings indicated

significant gender difference in academic achievement and girls were found to have

higher academic achievement as compared to boys. Shah (2003) investigated the

relationship between some social-psychological variables and the academic achievement

of students in Azad Kashmir. The sample comprised of 640 boys and 360 girls. Annual

examination scores for three consecutive years were aggregated as measure of academic

achievement of the students. The findings indicated a positive relationship between

parents‟ education and academic achievement of their children. Girls were also found to

have better academic achievement than boys.

Mclutcheon (2000) reported that a survey indicated students believed that out of 51

possible choice, the main reason missed a class was their negative perception of the

professor and the course.

Brophy (2002) suggested that teachers viewed themselves as active socialization

agent who works capable of stimulating students motivation to learn. One of the major

finding by (Small, 2000) was that instruction were perceived by students as having the

prime responsibility for learner interests or boredom. Kapoor, R. (2000) found that better

adjustment, study habits high intelligence and socio-economic status were related with

high achievement at Junior high school level. These studies suggest that not only the

mental abilities, but the other motivational factors may also be the responsible for

academic performance. Gawande, E.N. (2003) studied the relationship between

achievement motivation and scholastic achievement of higher secondary students of

Class XI and found that the correlation between achievement-motivation and scholastic
achievement of urban students was at higher level than that of rural students. There was

no significant difference in the coefficient of correlation of achievement-motivation and

scholastic achievement of non-backward and backward students. Boys were more

achievement motivated than girls. The mean difference in the scores of scholastic

achievement in boys and girls was not significant.

Gohfied (2004) found positive correlation between motivation and achievement

specifically, young student with higher academic intrinsic motivation has significantly

high achievement and intellectual performance. She also found that early intrinsic

motivation correlated with later motivation and achievement and later motivation is the

predictable from early achievement (Gohfied 2000). It was found that perceived

academic competence was positively related to intrinsic motivation.

Verma and Singh (2000) studied cognitive ability, academic achievement and study

habits of socially advantaged and dis advantaged adolescent student of 12th Estelar 45

grade in Uttar Pradesh and found that the significant ’positive values for cognitive ability,

academic achievement and study habits indicated that all the three factors were definitely

affected by social disadvantages. Socially advantaged group exhibited higher levels of

intelligence, academic achievement and good study habits.

Kapoor, R. (2007) found that better adjustment, study habits high intelligence and

socio-economic status were related with high achievement at Junior high school level.

These studies suggest that not only the mental abilities, but the other motivational factors

may also be the responsible for academic performance. Gawande, E.N. (2008) studied the

relationship between achievement motivation and scholastic achievement of higher

secondary students of Class XI and found that the correlation between achievement-
motivation and scholastic achievement of urban students was at higher level than that of

rural students. There was no significant difference in the coefficient of correlation of

achievement-motivation and scholastic achievement of non-backward and backward

students. Boys were more achievement motivated than girls. The mean difference in the

scores of scholastic achievement in boys and girls was not significant.

collects evidence and gather a data. Additionally it seeks to understand a given research

problem or topic from the perspective of the local population it involves the descriptive

research has been used in the study. Descriptive research is a study of status and is widely

used in education epidemiology, and the behavioral sciences. The researcher in this case

should adopt the said methods also they will be able to observe a large mass of the

population and make essential conclusions about the variables.

Population of the Study

The researchers used ten (10) Grade 12 ABM and GA Senior High Students in

San Jose NHS. The researchers conducted a survey to know the reason why some

students affecting their performance in making researcher paper.

Research Instrument

Interview Questions

The researcher gathered the data through the help of the research tools which

were the questionnaires. The researchers prepared five (5) question for the ten (10)

Grade 12 ABM students. These questionnaires were composed of questions which were

affiliated to our topic. Through the help of these questionnaires the researchers finally

gathered the information that we’re relevant to the topic.

Chapter IV

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter describes the analysis of data followed by a discussion of the

research findings. Data were analyzed to identify, describe and explore the effects of

research to the performance of selected Grade 12 ABM and GAS students in San Jose

NHS. Data were obtained from questionnaires completed by five (5) ABM and (5) five

GAS students. Shown below are the findings and responses of the respondents.

Advantages of making a Research

Participants were asked about the advantages of making a research. Based on the

gathered answers, nine (9) responded that it gives the new knowledge or an additional

information about the certain topic. It helps them to be aware and to improve their

knowledge for that certain topic. Moreover, one (1) responded that the advantage of

making a research was to make something clear and reliable. According to that answer, it

was able to believe on something that provided a proof to the topic, that they can rely on.

To sum it up, major of their answers proved that it gives their more knowledge to

encounter the possible solutions for a certain topic to those conclusions.

Managing time equally with the others tasks

When the participants were asked about how they can manage their time equally

with the other tasks, they came up with the different answers. One (1) participant

answered that they do the first nearest activity that on due. They have lots of projects that

they have to pass earlier so it can’t be harder. Seven (7) responded that scheduling to

equally do the tasks. Scheduling was a great one to do the other tasks equally, so it will

be easy and lessen the stress. One (1) responded that by doing the tasks fast. It can help

them also do what they want by not affecting the tasks fast. It can help them also do what

they want by not affecting the tasks that they’re doing. Lastly, one (1) answered that by

not wasting the time. It will be easy to them will do the tasks on time than wasting the

time in nonsense things that makes them stressed. Majority of the answers which came

from the selected students was scheduling a great one to do the other tasks equally

because they tend that it was be easy to them.

Benefits of making a Research

Most of the participants had different responses on the benefits of making a

research. By making a research it can help to make something clear in our mind. They

can learn by making their own research. Their knowledge will expand about the certain

topic and to correct the mistakes on what is their mind knows and to deploy it much

better with correct information. Researchers found out that majority of ten (10)

respondents answered that making a research is beneficial because it could help to the

community.
Overcoming the struggles while conducting a research

All of the participants had different perspectives on how to overcome the

struggles when conducting research writing. Three (3) responded that they must take a

rest, relax or calm down and be patient to everything and focus on the things that must be

done. They must be patient for everything so that it won’t be a struggle when conducting

a research. The other two (2) answered that asking a help to the others and investigate

more. It is good to asked help to know their perceptions. Moreover, two (2) responded

that they must have a time management. It is to overcome the struggles when conducting

research. Additionally, two (2) responded that always think that they can cope and need

to seek or learn something. They must have positive mind so that while conducting the

research it will not be affected. Finally, one (1) responded that it will help to the teachers

and also the cooperation of the group mates. It can help them to consider the knowledge

of teachers and also for the group mates.

Majority of the answers which came from the selected Grade 12 ABM and GA students

were approving that they must take a rest, relax, or calm down and be patient to

everything especially, of making a research.

Affects of Research to your Performance in other Subjects

Every participant had different perspectives on making a research paper affects

your performance in the other subjects. Based on the gathered answers, four (4)

participants answered that they believe that making a research paper affects the

performance in the other subjects because it causes so much time and efforts and the time

that should be allotted on the other subjects went to the research. It affects the
performance on the other subjects that they gave all the time and effort just to finish the

research rather than doing the other requirements. Moreover, four (4) participants

responded they’re not believed because if they really know how to manage their time

well they can easily do the other tasks. Proper time management will do, gave time for

every subjects so that it will not affect their performance. Additionally, two (2)

participants answered maybe, because it can help by giving knowledge and can’t help

because it is time consuming. It is hard to manage the time to perform better even though

they try their best to achieve the right time management and worst if all the tasks are

given at the same time.

Majority of their answers proved that they believed of making a research paper affects the

performance in other subjects because it causes so much time and more effort. Although

they had different situations which proved its effectiveness, they were able to state their

perception about having these research writing. Meanwhile, minority of the answers were

against the idea of making a research they believed that if they really know how to

manage their time well they easily do the other tasks.

Chapter V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

This chapter presents the summary of the research work undertaken, the

conclusions drawn and the recommendations as on outgrowth of the study. This research

is focus on Grade 12 ABM and GA senior high students in San Jose National High

School that findings of what are the effects of research to the performance of selected

Grade 12 ABM and GA senior high students through conducting a research. This chapter

is also based on the analysis and interpretation of the gathered data from the previous

chapter.

Summary of Findings

As a review of findings, there were five specific objectives that researchers aimed

to answer in this study. The first one was the advantages of making a research used by

selected senior high students in San Jose National High School. Researchers observed

that the most advantages of making a research is to be knowledgeable about certain topic,

give more additional information and to make something clear and reliable. Secondly,

participants shared the how they manage their time equally with other tasks. Based on

data gathered, the majority of doing a research in other subjects equally was the time

management because managing time can directly reduce their stress level, fewer

surprises, fewer tight deadlines and less rushing from task-to-task and place-to-place.

Being on top of time and work produces more opportunities.

Thirdly, the researchers wanted to figure out if making a research is beneficial.

Participants stated that these things could make them have positive insights because it

could help in the community and to communicate an idea or opinion to the readers and

peers. An author develops and improves his or her communication skills. Fourthly, the

researchers wanted to figure out if how they can overcome the struggles in conducting

research writing. Participants indicated that always put their mind that they need to seek

or learn something and be patient of making research writing. Lastly, participants shared

their perception about that making a research paper really affects their performance in

other subjects. Participants who found it really affect the performance in other subjects.

Moreover, they mentioned that it causes so much time and more effort. Sometimes it

consumed the time that should be allotted to the other subject.

Conclusions

Researchers had finally perceived using the information gathered that the

academic performance of Grade 12-ABM and GA students was affected. Participants

were given a chance to express their thoughts about research. Some was considered

research as a struggles in studying and some may not. Therefore, they believed that

research has a big factors to students.

Students are struggling in making a research. This study shows that research can

have a good and bad effects it depends on how they handle it. Even though, research has

its bad effects it is part of the study and it help students to know more something.

It is just by taking initiative to have something to learn and to know how they

facing the issues in their studies. This research was able to know the factors that affecting
the student’s performance in doing a research. Based on the interpreted results, each

students has a way on how can they overcome the stress by doing a research.

Recommendations

Delving about doing a research of Grade 12-ABM and GA students they must be

success through a current research. This could give a great help for them to know more

about something. In connection to this, here are the following recommendations to be

considered.

 Researchers recommend that this research gives them information and an

advantages to help them to easily do the research paper.

 Encouraged them to do the task with proper time management so that it will be

not hassle to do other tasks.

 Researchers recommend that this research gives them a benefits and a new

knowledge to know.

 Researchers recommend that this research gives them strategies and how to

overcome the struggles because of research.

perception of students. Researchers wanted to identify whether the research really affects

the performance of the senior high students.

This used a descriptive design in analyzing and interpreting the gathered data.

Researchers chose 10 students as their participant in the said study. They made interview

questions which were used during the course of data gathering process.

The very purpose of this research is to answer the specific objectives written on

the first chapter of this paper. First, Researchers find out the advantages of making a

research used by selected senior high students in San Jose National High School. Second,

participants shared how they manage their time equally with other tasks. Third, the

researchers wanted to figure out if making a research is beneficial. Fourth, the researchers

wanted to figure out if how they can overcome the struggles in conducting research

writing. Lastly, participants shared their perception about that making a research paper

really affects their performance in other subjects.

The researcher had interviewed a maximum of Ten (10) participants who had

been affected by this contractualization. Before conducting the interview the researcher

had made some questionnaire for their participants for them to gather more effective data.

Major of their answers proved that it gives their more knowledge to encounter the

possible solutions for a certain topic to those conclusions. On the second questions,

Majority of the answers which came from the selected students was scheduling a great
one to do the other tasks equally because they tend that it was be easy to them. On the

third questions, Researchers found out that majority of ten (10) respondents answered

that making a research is beneficial because it could help to the community. Next,

majority of the answers which came from the selected Grade 12 ABM and GA students

were approving that they must take a rest, relax, or calm down and be patient to

everything especially, of making a research. Lastly, Majority of their answers proved that

they believed of making a research paper affects the performance in other subjects

because it causes so much time and more effort. Although they had different situations

which proved its effectiveness, they were able to state their perception about having these

research writing. Meanwhile, minority of the answers were against the idea of making a

research they believed that if they really know how to manage their time well they easily

do the other tasks.
