Introduction

There is a spread of news that students nowadays act disrespectfully towards their teacher
and to their parents, they are confident to do this unrightful action because of that Child
Protection Policy that backups them.

To counter attack this policy, on July 19, it was reported that Senate Majority Leader Juan
Miguel Zubiri has filed Senate Bill No. 310 or the proposed GMRC Act. This act wants to return
Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) as a subject to elementary and high school level.
Claiming that children nowadays has a lower level discipline compared to the old days. Several
lawmakers want also to return Good Manners and Right Conduct.

GMRC starts at home. Children are influenced by what they see from their parents and
relatives that taught them there GMRC acts. But if elderly at home fails to be role models of a
child and instead show disrespectful manners such as shouting and cursing at people, they might
adopt and do this to others as well.

It influenced by the community as well. A community where a child belongs has a major
role in developing the child's attitude. If the parents already taught their child the use of "po" and
"opo","thank you”, “sorry" and the likes, and the community shows the child their use of these
words, then the child would adopt and use these words as well. But if they fail or act the
oppositely, the child then maybe influenced and act as such.

Body

Why can't children or the other youth seem to follow simple rules? No matter how
persistent we become with regard to the learning of our students, there are really factors we
cannot manipulate. In the past we were very insistent and zealous in learning because our
teachers were strict. We held great respect and not fear towards them.

Downgrading of values education in the curriculum has made it harder to raise upright
citizens. True, there were cases of teachers going beyond the prescribed disciplinary measures.
But they are doing it just to discipline those students who act disrespectfully towards them and to
other people.

GMRC, if taught and practiced at home, community, and school, students may not be
easily influenced by they peers as for we all know, their friends really has a big impact on their
behavior. An individual is still independent on his/her decision to be influenced or not, but
kids/teens wanted to "belong" and may forget the values they were taught.

To those teachers, who are one of the front liners in this battle, I really wish you could
bring back some disciplines imposed that will produce not just competitive but also well-
mannered learners for they are our future leaders and heroes.

Conclusion

So for my own stand, GMRC shall be brought back to curriculum of students not because
everyone is lacking the socially accepted values, but because our society is making much more
disrespectful leaders from our youth, than the ones we can trust our future with. If the youth of
today is the future of our land, GMRC will help them develop as responsible and socially
accepted individuals to be leaders in the future. If GMRC is practiced at school where students
make most of their time in, then an individual and his/her friends will share the common thought
and manner as they act as birds with the same feather. If GMRC is taught at school, then a
student may/can on influence their community and family, and not be influenced by then
negatively.

GMRC starts at home, in the community, then at school. But it can also start with school,
then student to community and his or her home. Remember, good manners and right conduct will
open doors that even the best education cannot, but if the best education offers good manners as
well, then we'll have our greatest opportunities opened.
