Group Interaction- process of defining and responding to various actions

Strauss- defines social interaction as a way persons/groups act/communicate with one another

Classification of Social Interaction:

1. Structural interaction- define society as a structure consisting of a network of interrelating


institutions
2. Cultural interaction- cultural aspect of social relationship
3. Religious interaction- social influence of religious groups
4. Geographical interaction-based on geographical domains

Social process- any mutual interaction experienced by an indv or group; consist of repetitive forms of
behavior

Classifications of Social Processes:

1. Conjunctive S.P.- group’s effort to maintain


2. Disjunctive S.P.- member’s effort are directed

5 Major Conjunctive S.P:

1. Cooperation- sharing the responsibility; act of working together


Types of cooperation:
a. Informal Cooperation- spontaneous give-and-take relationship
b. Formal Cooperation- sets formal goals
c. Symbiotic Cooperation- one or two members of society live together
Functions of Cooperation:
a. It creates social cohesion and integration among the members of the group.
b. It contributes to social stability and order.
c. It fosters consensus and compromise in various social, economic and political issues.
2. Accommodation- adjustment of hostile indv; actual act of working together
Forms of Accommodation:
a. Planned
b. Unplanned

Types of Unplanned Accommodation:

a. Displacement- occurs when the source of frustration is vague; using a scapegoat


Conflict- occurs between persons/groups of unequal status
b. Superordination-subordination- works only when it is impossible for one group to
continue the aggression; defeat=subordination
c. Compromise- extreme demands are given up to achieve limited goals
d. Release from hostility- release worries through relaxation
e. Toleration- when both parties realize that a settlement of conflict is impossible
3. Assimilation- process of interpenetration; reduces social conflict
4. Amalgamation- biological interbreeding
5. Acculturation- process and effect of significant change

Disjunctive S.P.:

1. Conflict- when two goals of equal importance are scarce


Classification of Conflict:
a. War- violent way to settle conflicts
b. Feud- rampant among clans
c. Litigation or legal battle-when conflict can no longer be resolved amicably
d. Conflict of impersonal ideas- not for personal benefit

Arbitration- used to settle labor disputes


Compromise- hen conflicting parties agree to settle for less
2. Competition- form of opposition or struggle to secure reward
2 Kinds of competition:
a. Personal competition- direct and face-to-face contact
b. Impersonal competition- not directly aware of each other’s presence
3. Differentiation- social process of elimination competition
